The following narrative on John B Kennedy was provided by his great-great grandson Stephen M. Alvis - April 1, 2007
John B. Kennedy who was in the Ohio Volunteers in the Civil War had enrolled on August 13, 1862. John B. was discharged in Salisbury, North Carolina, 24 June 1865. It says he was born in Juniata Co., Pennsylvania, and he was 5 foot, 10 inches tall, with fair complexion, grey eyes, and light hair. His pre-enlistment occupation was farmer. He was a private in Company E, 118th Regiment of the Ohio Infantry Volunteers. Being only 13, he lied about his age to enlist. He was in the Battle of Shiloh, where two of his company were killed simultaneously on either side of him as they stepped on the top rail of a wooden fence while charging the Confederates. He came through the war without a scratch, but got dysentery at the end and nearly died.

He was a street car conductor around 1900. He helped raise my grandfather John Whaley, because John's father had gone off to California to drill for oil. He sent back money for Carrie and the children to come out twice, but the Kennedy's said California was a wild place, unfit for children, and convinced Carrie to take the money and buy a cigar store. That's why her daughters are listed as cigar store clerks. (1920 Census - see below)

Doris is survived by her mother Hazel Churney; sisters Barbara Suhre, Teresa Magee and Anita Keeler; nephews John Suhre and Michael Magee; nieces Sarah Sanchez, Kristen Duffeler, Erin Keeler and Kathleen Keeler and other dear relatives and friends. Her father Frank Churney died in 1973.

During her 33 year career as a human resource specialist, she served in a number of federal agencies including the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Defense, and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. She was a long time active member of the Legion of Mary at Holy Spirit Parish in Annandale, Virginia.

Interment at Fairfax Memorial Park.

Olive arrived into the United States, May 30, 1946 aboard the ship John Ericsson which docked in New York, New York from England. According to great grand daughter Becky (e-mail correspondence Aug 20, 2019), Olive was an orphan with the last name of Evans.  She was married first to Dukes, which was the last name she used on the ship's passenger list.  It is unknown what happened to Dukes.
 
John "Jack" Whaley Duck Sayles
  John Whaley Sayles is actually John Whaley Duck.  In the FamilySearch database, "Ohio, County Births, 1841-2003", John Whaley Duck is found as being born Aug 22, 1918, Lima, Allen Co., OH.  His parents were Harry A Duck and Doris Whaley.

In the 1920 Census, he is shown as John W Duck, under his mother's name.  Likewise in the 1930 Census.

1930 - 1940 - Changes name to John Whaley Sales OR is adopted by aunt Hazel.

In 1940 he appears in the census under the name Jack Sayles living with his aunt and uncle Hazel and Philip Sayles.  Grandmother Carrie Whaley is also living with him.  In December of 1940, he marries Jean Allen in Chicago under the name John Whaley Sayles.

Jeanne Neff, 89, died at 8:03 p.m. July 4, 2012, at Shawnee Manor.

She was born June 19, 1923, to John Frank and Imogene Ferguson Kennedy, who both preceded her in death. On Nov. 26, 1953, she married Donald R. Neff, who died Nov. 3, 1996.

Mrs. Neff was a self-employed bookkeeper. She was raised in the Baptist faith. Words to describe her are benevolent, self-sacrificing and kind. She enjoyed knitting and reading.

Survivors include two sons, Donald (Sonya) Neff, of Lima, and Daniel Neff of Leipsic; a daughter, Sheryl Neff of Wilson, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Jason, Carmen and Tim.

She was preceded in death a daughter, Jeryl Neff; and a brother, Jack Alvin Kennedy.

Funeral services will begin at noon Saturday at Chiles-Laman Funeral and Cremation Services, Shawnee Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Elida.

Jeryl Neff, 54, of Kings/Rochelle, Ill., died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, at Rochelle Community Hospital.

Born Aug. 26, 1956, in Lima, Ohio, to Donald and Jeanne (Kennedy) Neff, Jeryl graduated in 1974 from Shawnee High School in Lima, Ohio, and went on to Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, to get her undergraduate degree in 1981. She then graduated from Dayton University in Dayton, Ohio, with a master's degree in 1985.

Jeryl was a teacher and coach of softball and volleyball at Butler University, UW Superior and Dickinson College. She moved from Indianapolis, Ind., to Kings in 1997 and started her own business teaching young girls the art of pitching and hitting in softball. She loved her Bible and Bible study and mentoring young kids and adults. Jeryl gave her heart and soul to her church – The Evangelical Free Church of Sycamore/DeKalb.

The family would like to thank Betty Anderson for all the love and care she gave to Jeryl over the years, along with her son, Lucas Anderson, both of Kings.

Survivors include her mother, Jeanne Neff, and sister, Sheryl Neff, both of Wilson, N.C.; brothers, Danny Neff and Donnie (Sonya) Neff, both of Lima, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her father, Donald Neff.

  Tracking down John was not easy.  There are many John Kennedy's.  I started with his birth date found on the birth register, then found the WWI Registration with the identical birth date.  Based on the WWI Registration, I tracked him to Cleveland.  Confirming the John I found in the 1920 Census had the same address as the WWI Registration.  From there, I was able to find John in the 1910 and 1930 Census.

Regarding Rose's birth location.  It is a mystery.  In the 1910 Census she says IN, In 1920, VA; in 1930, KY;  On her death certificate it say Lebanon, MD.  There is no Lebanon in Maryland, however there is one in Kentucky, Virginia, and Indiana.

  The death certificate for John was very vague.  No birth date.  No parents listed.  How did I know I had the correct John?  By cross checking it with the address on Rose's certificate and the city directories.  It is the correct John.
