Photo of Marion French Hart and James Harriet Long
Family photo kindly provided by Marguerite Bostonia (wife of
Michael Bostonia) with permission to use on this
website. Received during e-mail correspondence in
2020.
According to Marguerite, in a conversation with her
grandmother-in-law Eleanor (daughter of Marion and
James), James Harriet was so tiny that she was standing
on a crate when this photograph was taken.
IF you copy this photo to place on ANY website or
in your ancestry.com family tree.
PLEASE GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS
DUE. It is the least you can do, considering
you got it here for free. Thank you!

- Census - Same awful
census taker as Marion's mother in Tucker Co., WV. The
only birth month/year that is accurate, is that for Harriet's
month and year. The rest is either information that came
from someone that did not know OR the census taker just filled
in random information to fill the form. One child is also
not listed. |

1914 - 1915 -
According to direct family records, Marion was accidentally shot
by a unattended gun that fell to the ground. (See news
article below about daughter Eleanor.) There
are 3 entries, back-to-back, in the death records. The final
entry is January 1, 1915 so I took that date as his FINAL death
date. |

firefighter level three and a certified fire officer.
He was instrumental in developing the current Truck Company
class that the WVU Fire Service Extension is presently teaching.
He was a HAZMAT Tech, where he was member of WV Regional

and also a former Clarksburg city firefighter.
He was a member of the Belington Masonic Lodge A.F.&A.M. No. 125

he will lie in state from noon to 2 p.m., the funeral hour, when
final rites will be conducted by Rev. Jimmie Tallman and Rev.
Doyle Neil Ryder. Interment will follow in the Belington
Fraternal Cemetery.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made
to the Kelsey and Zachery Hart Benefit Trust Fund at the Freedom

Not transcribed.
I belief this might have been in a
family bible |
|
The following narrative
written by Marion Milton Hart was transcribed by
me (Laurel) from the scanned documents on the
left.
According to Marion's great niece-in-law,
Marguerite Bostonia, Marion was the member of
the family who did a little research into his
family's genealogy. Marguerite Bostonia
kindly provided his notes/narrative to me to
include on this website.
Parts of these documents repeat some
information. My job in transcribing was to
just transcribe the information typed up by
Marion Milton Hart, not to edit anything.
However, I have done research on other members
of the extended family tree and was able to add
some notes to MMH's narrative which will clarify
who he is talking about. These notes are
shown below in red.
The Harts of Randolph
May be ordered from Mrs. Katherine Hart Frame,
Dailey, W.Va., 26259, Price $24.00, postage
included. No sales tax except if ordered from
W.Va.
Having acquired Hu Maxwell’s and Homer Floyd
Fansler’s Histories of Tucker County, I became
aware of the existence of the above book, and
ordered it. I got a letter asking which line I
belonged to. The author is about 80 years old
and has spent almost a lifetime collecting the
information. We are all in it, as well as a
zillion other Harts.
As near as I can figure it out the line of
descent is as follow:
Lots of Harts came to New England in the 1600’s,
from England. JOHN HART, Signer of Declaration
of Independence, son of Edward Hart and Martha
Furman. Thought to have been born in N.J., date
unknown, but was baptized Feb 21, 171 in N.J.
Died 1779. About 1740 married Deborah Scudder.
Had lots of kids and was involved in politics
and Committee of Correspondence just prior to
Rev. War. Owned farm, mill, and distillery.
During war, Hessians destroyed a lot of his
property that they did not confiscate. He had to
take to the hills, and his family was scattered,
but were reunited after Washington captured
Trenton.
DANIEL HART, one of his sons, born Aug 13, 1762,
died Sep 13, 1848. Buried in Beverly Cemetary
[stet]. Married Margaret Bunn. He and brother
Edward moved to what is now Randolph County,
W.Va., in 1794. He served short time in Rev.
War, and served in Virginia Assembly. He had 9
kids.
JOHN SCUDDER HART, son of Daniel, Born Sept, 7,
1791 in N. J. died 1860. Married Jemima Slagle.
Buried Israel Church Cemetary [stet], Kerens,
W.Va.
ELAM HART, son of John Scudder Hart, (and my
grandfather.) He was fourth son. Born Oct. 1848,
died Nov. 21, 1879. Buried in Israel Church
Cemetary [stet] near Kerens, W.Va. Died of a
cancerous tumor. His first marriage was to
Martha W Wilmoth in 1847. She died 1851. They
had two children, Milton F Hart, and Marion
Perry Hart, both of whom died very young. Elam
run a store. |
2ND MARRIAGE Sept. 2, 1855 to Mary Lucretia
Corrick, daughter of Wm. Corrick, after whom
Battle of Corricks Ford was named.
Their son, Perry M Hart was 2 years old in 1860
census. Aunt Nora Collet told me he was the
meanest man she ever knew. He was married twice;
no record of any children. In 1886 was living in
Sonoma, Cal and was reportedly found dead in a
boat in the Pacific, Ocean, supposedly while
hunting.
Willie Hart, age 22, was shot in Cal. He was
very good looking; we used to have a big framed
picture of him. Details of his death never were
ascertained. Aunt Nora Collet told me there were
two versions. One that he got lost out hunting,
and was shot while approaching a house. The
other that he was working ona a ranch and was
shot by another man in an argument over a
bridle.
Marion FRENCH HART, my father.
AND SO ON – AD INFINIM
There is a chapter that links the Harts to the
nobility and kings of England, France, Scotland,
clear back to Charlemagne
Marion M. Hart,
Jan. 27, 1979
CONDENSED HART GENEALOGY
Name is of ancient Anglo-Saxon origin, and
formerly spelled various ways such as Hurtt,
Hearte, Hort. Has been traced back to time of
Charlemagne. Many Harts came to New England in
very early 1600’s, and are scattered all over.
Must be a zillion of them.
John Hart, New Jersey, signer of Dec. of
Independence. Had large family and was wealthy
mill and land owner. During Rev. War hid out in
hills and family scattered. Hessians destroyed
what they could not carry away of his property.
Died 1779.
In 1794 his two sons Daniel and Edward moved to
West Augusta County (Now Randolph Co., W.Va.).
We are descended from Daniel Hart. Hallies
grandfather, Elam Hart, - May 22, 1824-Nov 21,
1879. Buried in Israel Church Cemetary [stet],
Kerens, W. Va. His first wife and children died.
On Sept. 2 1855 married Mary Lucretia Corrick,
daughter of Wm, Corrick and sister of Edith
Corrick. They had three sons, Marion French,
Willie, and Perry. After his death Granny Hart
as we called her, sold all of his holdings for
gold and went to California. Took Perry and
Willie with her, and left our father Marion
French to shift for himself at at [stet] age 13.
Perry was found dead in a boat on Pacific Ocean,
duck hunting. Willie was a very handsome 22 year
old when he was shot in California. One version
that he got lost hunting and was shot by someone
who thought he was an intruder. The other that
while working on a ranch he was shot by another
man in an argument over a bridle. She was
supposed to send for our father, but never did,
which is the reason us kids never had much use
for her.

In short, according the CA
death certificate for Perry M Hart. He commit
suicide with a gun. Unknown if it was on a
boat. The handsome Willie mentioned above
is John William Hart who was murdered by his
first cousin Cyrus Corrick son of Jefferson
Marteney Corrick, brother of Mary Lucretia
Corrick. On the above mentioned web page,
I have placed two newspaper articles about this
murder. --Laurel]
Seemed like she had plenty of money and lived in
a high style. After our dad was killed in 1914,
whe was living on a cousins ranch in Kansas was
about broke and our mother took her in. When she
moved in she had a piano crate, trunk, and
Morris chair. Never saw so much silk and brodade
[stet] clothing in my life. After she died
Eleanor and I went through her things. The only
thing left is a pocket enclopedia [stet], which
I have. She was married three times.
Our dad had traded a 38-40 Marlin lever action
rifle for a muzzle loading Daniel Boone outfit.
Three days before Xmas in 1914 he went to a
shooting match in Parsons. Some idiot accidently
shot him in the chest. He was taken by train to
hospital in Davis, and died about three days
later. Mom was there with him. I was in first
year of school. When word came to the school
house, us kids went home.
We stuck it out on the farm till 1919. Viva and
Chaunce got married, Joe enlisted in 1917,
Hallie got a job as waitress at the Commercial
Hotel in Parsons. We put most of the farm out on
shares, but Mom, Eleanor and I did some of the
farm work. I worked for farmers sometimes, on
threshing machine, and following a potato digger
from daylight to dark. In 1917 Mom, Eleanor, and
I picked strawberries for neighbors, three times
a week for shipping.
In 1919 after Hallie and Cale got married, we
sold 17 acres of bottom land and 47 acres of
wooded hill land for $2000.00. Mom and Eleanor
went to live with Viva and Harold Barb, and
Hallie and Cale took me in. Nobody could have
treated be better. Cale was working in the
boiler room, firing furnaces at the Pulp Mill,
but late in 1920 they went to Morgantown
(Scott’s Run) to work in the mines. I stayed
with the Barbs till they got settled and then
joined them. During thee 1921 depression, Cale
was running the concrete mixer for the county
paving roads. I worked that summer as water boy
at 20 cents an hour. I finished the last half of
eighth grade at Bertha, a big mining town with
company store. Went to first year high school in
Morgantown. OVER-
CONDENSED CORRICK, LONG GENEALOGY
Wm. Corrick (pronounced Carrick) 1800-1882. He
was your great, great, great grandfather. Had 18
children. Next his daughter Edith-
Edith (married Garret Long) your great, great
grandparents.
Samantha (Aunt Mant) married Henry Shrader (We
were always very close to this family). My
mother’s sister.
Another sister, Flo, Married Will Bently, moved
to California when Mom was about 10 years old.
Another sister Nora married John Collet.
Another sister, Alice, married Nathan Callihan,
Phillipi [stet], W.Va.
CIVIL WAR PERIOD. A lot of the backwaters of the
Civil War was in W.Va. The first land skirmish
was at Phillipi [stet]
Both sides needed control of the Baltimore &
Ohio railroad from Washington, D.C. to
Parkersburg & Wheeling, W.Va.
The Confederated had a good sized army in wester
Va. (now W.Va.). Gen McCllean [stet] invaded
from Parkersburg with abut 20,000 men. The
Confederates split into three armies and tried
to get back to Va.
The battle of Corrick’s Ford was on July 13,
1861. Robert S Garnett (West Pointer, western
Indian fighter) had about 6000 men. Pursued by
Union General T. A. Morris with about 600 men.
Decided to make a stand at Job’s Ford (site of
Holly Meadows school), but left a rear guard on
Shavers Fork River at farm of Wm. Corrick.
Garnett hearing the firing, rode with aides back
to Corrick’s Ford. Too proud to dismount he was
killed by a bullet. He died in Wm. Corrick’s
bed, the first general killed in the Civil War.
His remaining forces panicked and went every man
for himself. Garnett’s body eventually was sent
to Grafton and sent to his family in Virginia.
I can remember Grandma Long telling about this
battle. She said the Union had sent riders to
warn people to clear out. When it was over Wm.
Corrick’s kitchen was used for prisoners. They
bored holes in the floor to dispose of blood
from wounded, and a cannon ball had shot a leg
off the dining room table.
Evidently at that time, she was living in the
Holly Meadows, and had twin girl babies. Both
sides had their militia, and her husband, Garret
Long, an officer of the Confederate Home Guards,
was in a federal prison camp at Wheeling.
Released after here months with petitions from
both sides, health ruined, eventually died of
throat cancer. She said the Union soldiers ran
off the livestock and chickens. A soldier found
a side saddle under a bed, and she and the
soldier were tugging on each end until an
officer made the soldier let go. She hid a
Confederate, dressed him in women’s clothes, got
on a horse with him and rode through the union
lines. He escaped over the mountains and wrote
to her from Georgia after the war.
I found out how we are related to the Parsons
tribe. Garret Long’s sister Eunice (known as
Aunt Sis) married Job Parsons. They lived in a
log house until their son Ward, who must have
built a good part of the houses in Akron, built
a three story house in the early 1900’s. I can
remember going to Aunt Sis funeral, and getting
lost on the third floor. I must have been about
3 or 4 at the time.
[Job Parsons – son of Solomon Parsons and Mary
Polly Ward. Married first to Jemima Ward
(daughter of Adonijah Ward and Hannah Hull), Sep
2, 1840. They were first cousins. Jemima dies
before 1860. Job then marries Eunice Jane Long,
Jul 22, 1870. Ward Parsons was the son of Job
Ward and his first wife Jemima, not Eunice.

OVER
In 1923 I went to Joe & Bernetta’s in Akron and
finished H.S. there. I did a lot of work for
them, and worked on a truck farm for 20 cents an
hour, sometimes 14 hours a day, the summer I was
16. Couple years ago Hallie went with us up to
Bertha, everything gone except the old boarded
up school house, and the place is a trailer
court.
Believe me, when I was at Scott’s Run, I had
enough adventures to fill a book. I wore scout
pants and Cale’s army leggings and shoes. I
found a wide brimmed hat, and made a holster
from an old pair high top shoes. With this
holster and a wide leather German belt Joe had
sent from Luxembourgh, casing a 22 blank pistol,
I looked at a distance like a state cop. One day
when I went up on the hill where the miners
lived, one guy thought I was a state trooper,
and dumped his moonshine mash and hid his still.
In 1921 when Cale was running concrete mixer for
county, and I was waterboy, Ham came from Ohio,
and Cale got him a job firing the boiler the
steam operated mixer. I shared a room with him.
Sometimes at night, he and I would sit in the
kitchen; and I would bum cigarettes from him and
listen to his army stories. Some of them would
curl your hair. On the way back from
Vladivostock [stet], they stopped at Shanghai,
Nagasaki, and Pearl Harbor, and the Phillipines
[stet]. We had a standing joke when the going
got tough “get our [stet] your boles”. Bolo is
about the same as machete.
Our dad, M.F. Hart, had very little schooling,
but was quite literate. We had books, and
newspapers. He was good at figures and a good
carpenter. Took two men to carry his tool box.
Joe had these tools and used them in a lot of
building in California. Dad was also a farmer,
blacksmith, lumberjack, and sometimes worked
away at these trades. Joe met a 1st cousin of
our father, Simpson Hart, a carpenter, in
California, but don’t know any more about him.
[Simpson Hart - b. Jan 31, 1862, Kerens, WV; d.
Jun 22, 1958, Polk Co., FL was the son of David
Blackman Hart and Anzina Jane Wilmoth. David
Blackman Hart was the brother of Elam Hart. So
yes, Simpson was a first cousin to Marion French
Hart – Laurel

Mom’s sister Flo, Mrs. Will Bently, had a
daughter Eva and maybe a son. When Viva went to
Cal. Joe & Bernetta took her to Salinas to see
Eva. She had a daughter that was married to a
man that Jimmy Goff served with in the Navy, and
used to sing with Mitch Miller. Jimmy said there
was a man who didn’t know what to do with
himself. She divorced him and the last I ever
heard of her she had a sculptress studio in San
Francisco. When Bell, Larry, and I were in Cal.
In 1975 we stayed all night in Salinas on the
way to Yosemite. Bernetta though we should stop
to see Eva, but we never seen her and were on a
tight schedule, so we didn’t stop. Her husband
had been U
Under-Sherriff of the county for over 40 years.
Trying to figure out all these relationships can
drive you up the wall. --

Larry G. Hart, 81, former longtime
resident of Cuyahoga Falls, passed away on Friday, September 8,
2017, at Copeland Oaks Crandall Medical Center, in Sebring,
after a lengthy illness.
Larry graduated from South High School, earned a bachelor's
degree at the University of Akron, where he was a member of Tau
Kappa Epsilon fraternity, and later completed a Master's degree
at Kent State University. Early in his career, he taught
elementary education in the Akron area and then was the reading
specialist at the Youth Development Center, in Hudson, for
several years. He made many friends while working part time at
the YMCA and Falls Natatorium.
Larry served in the Army Reserves, and he was an active member
of Faith United Methodist Church. A man of many talents, Larry
played piano and organ, loved imagegraphy, and traveled
extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad. As a snowbird, he
enjoyed strolling the snow white sand beaches of the Florida
panhandle. Larry was intrigued by how things worked, and he
designed and built a vacation cottage. He was a collector of
reed organs and a member of the Reed Organ Society. A real
"people" person, Larry had the ability to find a connection with
almost anyone he met. His friends were legion and covered the
spectrum from young to old.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Marion M. and Belva
(Steinmetz) Hart. He is survived by his sister, Linda (David)
Workman; niece, Amy (Jared Grosinske) Workman; and his nephew,
Jon (Kim) Workman and their children, Hannah, Ethan, and Lizzie.
A debt of gratitude is owed to the caring staff of Copeland Oaks
and Crandall Medical Center and to the loving support provided
by Crossroads Hospice.
Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, September 11, 2017
at the Adams Mason Funeral Home, (791 East Market Street), where
a memorial service will immediately follow at 7 p.m. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation
for Parkinson's Research, Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777,

After 1920
it is more difficult and confusing to follow Eleanor in the online records.
According to the marriage and SS Application of Eleanor's daughter Margaret, Margaret's father was
Joseph Kenneth Larison. If this is correct, then
Margaret married or was involved with Joseph Kenneth
Larison around 1926 because Margaret was born May 18,
1927. I am currently unable to locate a marriage
license in WV or neighboring states of VA, PA, and OH.
What does help to confirm that there was some kind of
marriage between Eleanor and Joseph K Larison, is the
1930 Census for Joseph K Larison. He is shown
living with his parents in Fairfax, Tucker Co., WV.
Marital status given is "Married". Joseph does not
marry Alpha Opal McCray until the following year because
Alpha Opal is still living at home with her parents at
age 16, single, in the same town.
Also of interest in this 1930 census for Joseph K
Larison, are the grandchildren living in the household.
They are two of the four children of Joseph's sister
Mary, who is married to Roy Alford Smith.
Roy A Smith who has separated from Mary Larison is shown
in the 1930 Census living in Wheeling, Belmont Co., OH
with Eleanor Hart Larison and her daughter Margaret. The
Census taker records that the couple has been married
for 3 years, which was not correct unless it was a
common law marriage...or not.

1942 - WWII
Registration for Roy "Alfred" Smith has some conflicting
info. The birth date is the same, Sep 17.
But the birth year is now 1896, instead of 1894.
Also MD is given as state of birth, not WV.
Besides the birth month and day, the wife's name of
Eleanor Smith is correct on this form |
| |
1942 - 1967
- Somewhere in this year range, Roy leaves Eleanor and
moves to San Miguel Co., NM where he dies in 1967.
Doing an online search, the Las Vegas, NM Carnegie
Library catalog does have CD and print copies of the
City Directories for Las Vegas, Miguel Co., NM.
Unfortunately, they are not available online.
Research would need to be done in-person to see if Roy A
Smith appears in these directories. |

Eleanor's life 'in the fast line'
Centenarian embraces hard work
Observer-Reporter
https://observer-reporter.com
(Washington County, PA)
By Denise Bachman (Unknown date. Based on the
reference to Eleanor's birth day, Feb 12, this article was
probably published Jan or Feb 2009) |
When Eleanor Smith retired at age 65
as a floor supervisor from JC Penney, her co-workers presented
her with what they thought was a most fitting gift: a pair of
roller skates.
"I was always going fast. There was a lot of floor there
to take care of," Mrs. Smith said.
Besides, her co-workers knew she wasn't about to let age slow
her down.
On Feb 12, Mrs Smith will celebrate her 100th birthday,
attributing the milestone to working hard her entire life.
"Work never hurt anybody," she said.
Mrs. Smith was born on Holly Meadows Farm in Parsons, W.Va., the
youngest of Marion French and James Harriet Hart's six children.
And it was only recently that she discovered, through a
relative's genealogy research about the Harts of Tucker County
(W.Va.), that she is the great-great-great-granddaughter of John
Hart, one of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of
Independence.
Mrs. Smith strong work ethic was established early when her
father died in a freak accident at a shooting match. A gun
positioned against a tree fell over and discharged; a bullet
struck Marion Hart. Eleanor was just 4 years old.
"Oh, I really adored my father. t was such a shame," she
said. "I remember he would dress me in front of the coal
stove in the mornings,"
The Depression was a struggle, too, said Mrs. Smith, recalling
how butter and sugar were rationed. "I always baked, but
you didn't bake anything at that time."
Mrs. Smith spent much of her young life as a single mother
tending to her only child, Margaret who weighed just 3 pounds at
birth. Mrs. Smith remembers placing the infant on a satin
pillow in a box and placing her in the oven to keep her warm.
And when Margaret's husband was killed in an accident in 1958,
she moved into her daughter's home to help care for her
grandchildren, Tim and Harriet Bostonia.
Harriet said the family had no money, so, taking a cue from her
own mother, Mrs. Smith canned and froze "everything." She
also learned to drive, and the first car she purchased was a red
Rambler.
Mrs. Smith spent much of her 30 year career at Penney's - first
on South Main Street, and later at the Washington Mall - in the
hat department, and she organized hat shows at area churches.
"Nobody liked the idea. It was my idea, and I thought it
was a good idea," she said.
Despite her busy schedule, Mrs. Smith always was active in her
church, Friendship Community, serving as its treasurer and
"seamstress." She made cushions for the pews, alter
coverings and Communion tablecloths. She also was an
award-winning photographer, and was one of the founders of the
Washington Camera Club.
Before moving into an assisted-living facility two years ago,
Mrs. Smith was a longtime resident of Thomas Campbell
Apartments, where she worked in the dining hall and as a floor
monitor.
In addition to her two grandchildren, she has two
great-grandchildren, Sarah and Guy Bostonia, and several
great-nieces and great-nephews. |
