| |
|
Mary Beall and Lawrence Griffin and John Van Yorx |
| |
Mary has not been
easy to track down. It is known that she married James
Lawrence Griffin. However, it is not known when.
There is the possibility that she was married to someone
else first, then married James. James' younger brother
Thomas Frazier Griffin marries his wife Elnora Wood in
Licking Co., in 1850. So chances are, that James also
married Mary in Licking Co., since this is where her family
was living in the 1840 and 1850 Censuses.
Brothers of James, Thomas Frazier Griffin and Joseph Smith
Griffin moved to Iowa between the 1850's - 1860's.
There is a possibility that James and Mary may have moved
there also. Joseph Smith Griffin remained in Iowa while
Thomas Frazier Griffin eventually moves to Columbus. James
Lawrence Griffin starts appearing in Columbus, Franklin Co.,
OH around 1862.
|
| |
1850
- Census - Unable to locate Mary and/or James Griffin |
| |
1856
- Iowa Census - German, Keokuk Co., IA. Iowa Census
records have a J S (which could be an L) and Mary Griffin
born in OH. This is the same town and county in Iowa
that James' brothers Thomas and Joseph appear in the 1860 US
Census. However, when searching cemetery records, I
discovered that Joseph Smith Griffin marries Mary (nee)
Barnett Reynolds former wife of James Reynolds. She
died Apr 20, 1957. Joseph Smith Griffin then marries
Lydia. So on this census record, J S Griffin is Joseph
Smith Griffin and Mary is Mary Barnett, not Beall. |
| |
1860
- Census - Unable to locate Mary and/or James Griffin
|
| |
1862
- City Directories - Columbus, Franklin Co., OH - James L
Griffins appears in City Directory
|
| |
1867 --
James Lawrence Griffin passes away Aug 30, 1867. The
burial plot that he is buried in at Green Lawn, is Section
F, Lot 27. According to cemetery records, Thomas F
Griffin (James' brother) purchased the northern half of the
lot. Mary Beall Van Yorx purchased the southern half.
James appears to be the first burial in this lot.
Mary's parents Jane and Samuel followed soon after in 1869
and 1872. There are fifteen Beall, Griffin, and Bloor
family members buried in this plot.
|
| |
1870 -
Census - Mary is living with her brother Bruce. Her brother Bruce
is indexed as Bell Pruse. Also, he is recorded with an F for
female. However, in another column, he is recorded as a male citizen of the US.
Also, profession is given as Hackman which would not be a profession a
woman had at this time. So the "F" was an error. |

1873 - 1880 - Mary separates from John Van
Yorx. In 1880, she is living with the Stacy Taylor family without
John. In city directories in the late 1880's and 1890's she is
listed as the widow of John. Actually, he did not die until 1904.
|
| |
1880 -
Census - Mary is living in the household of Stacy Taylor. Stacy is
a well known lawyer and judge in the Columbus area. His wife
Elizabeth's maiden name was Beall. There is the possibility that
Elizabeth is the sister of Mary BUT, then she would have been recorded
as the sister-in-law instead of cousin. The other possibility is
that Samuel Beall had a brother in Ohio and Elizabeth is the daughter of
that brother.
Elizabeth's information is ---- Elizabeth Beall - b. Jan 17, 1824,
Holmes Co., OH (on death records); d. Feb 19, 1881, Columbus, Franklin Co., OH.
Buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Columbus, Franklin Co., OH;
m1. John H Matheny (b. May 9, 1818; d. Dec 26, 1852) -- Jun 7,
1840, Licking Co., OH; m2. Stacy Taylor ( b. 1806; d. 1893 )
-- Nov 12, 1853, Franklin Co., OH. Elizabeth had children with
both Matheny and Taylor. ( Note to self: refer to e-mail

1900 - Mary starts to use her first married name of Griffin more
than Van Yorx - ca 1900.
|
| |
1900 - Census - Mary is living with her sister Hester Bloor and
nephew George Bloor.
Also of note on this census are the number of children for Mary.
She reports that she had three children that are all deceased by 1900.
It is unknown whether this is correct or not. There is not enough
information. She may have had children that were adults by the
time her husband died in 1867. OR they may have been children that
died as infants. A broad search looking for children that had a
father with the name Griffin and mother Beall did not result in any
hits. |

1893 - Marries Etta -- ca 1893 --
However, I can find no marriage records. The only time Bruce
appears in the census with a wife is in 1900. On one of his death
certificates (one with city and one with county), there is "widow"
written in on one but it was crossed out with the word "single" added.
Which could mean he was divorced. In the 1910 Census he is single.
I though perhaps that there was another Bruce Beall in Columbus, but
after cross-checking the city directories with census records, there is
only one Bruce.
Bruce spent most of the 1880's - 1890's working as a railroad engineer.
In the late 1890's and early 1900's he worked in a saloon or perhaps
owned a bar. The address for the saloon and home were the same. I
am guessing that his residence was possibly located above the bar. |
