1860 - Census - Martha's two daughter from her first marriage,
Sarah Jane and Mary Ellen are shown living with Martha and second husband
Joseph. Joseph and Martha now have a daughter Jeannette "Nettie".
Joseph's daughter Sarah Ann is living with his first wife's family in
the house hold of Williams Watts in Franklin Co., OH
What is odd, is daughter Sarah Jane who married in 1855. A
separate census sheet shows Sarah Jane with her husband and two young
children in Franklin County, OH. The possibility is that she was
visiting her parents and was there when the census taker arrived.
I looked for another Joseph and Martha Miller in Ohio, in case I had the
wrong couple, but could find none.
Of note....Martha's daughters Sarah and Mary keep their maiden
name of Berry. It is Berry when they marry and on their death
certificates. Only the 1860 Census has their last name as Miller
It is not known why Augusta Slocum (1844-1909) is living with them.
She later marries a Henry Butler (1836-1913) |

deaths of Frances A Brodbeck Sr and Jr
They are both buried in East Akron Cemetery
Jr died before Sr
Jr died in Baltimore, Maryland at a hospital in 1918. Not in OH.
Thus, the absence of any death records in OH
Sr died 1921, in Ohio. Death certificate is easily found. |

I have searched for every Fred* in Ohio without success.
There were several Frederick Brodbeck in this time period,
but not this Fred. He was not the Fred who married
Lydia Stafford. Or the Fred who appears in Amboy,
Fulton Co., OH. Or the Fred that appears in
Cincinnati, OH. The Fred that appears in Canton, was
an Engineer and is not this Fred.
His death certificate says he was a widower. However,
I can find no marriage record for him. He was not the
Frederick Brodbeck that married Lydia Stafford in Franklin
Co., OH. I even followed up on a Charles F Brodbeck,
in case he inverted his first and middle names and "C"
stands for Charles. This was not him either. After
spending several hours trying to find him in the census or
marriage records...... I give up. |

Prominent Business
Man Succumbs After Operation at Baltimore
Francis A. Brodbeck, E. Cuyahoga Falls Av. prominent
Akron business and real estate man, died at 10:15
Friday morning at a hospital at Baltimore, Md.,
following an operation, according to word received
here by J. Bert Jackson, his brother-in-law. The
operation was a slight one and his business
associates here heard from Mr. Brodbeck a few days
ago saying that he expected to be out of the
hospital within a week. His death comes as a shock
to the business community. . Mrs. Brodbeck had
accompanied her husband to Baltimore. Mr. Brodbeck
was president of the Union Fireproof Storage Co.,
and founded Brodbeck Park north of the city.
Mr. Brodbeck was born in Columbus 50 years ago. His
great grand father on his mother's side had been an
Oxford graduate and lord mayor of London. His
paternal grandfather was one of the founders of the
German Methodist Church in America. His father was a
newspaper writer on the staff of the Ohio State
Journal during the Civil War and came to Akron in
1902 on his retirement from business.
F. A. Brodbeck was a traveling man, then started a ?
furnishing store in Columbus and later a shirt
factory. On coming to Akron in 1893 he was active
first in paving and building brick operations and
later operated dry goods stores in Akron, Cuyahoga
Falls and Mineral City. In recent years he was
active in real estate and investments. He was a
member of the Akron City Club |
