Obituary for
Donald Bloor
http://gazette.com/longtime-local-army-chaplain-soothed-souls-all-over-the-world/article/133991 |
|
 |
Donald
Bloor practiced what he preached. Over the
years, as an Army chaplain and civilian minister, he
soothed the souls of soldiers in Vietnam and other
far flung countries, was a guiding light for several
Colorado Springs congregations, and, as a volunteer
chaplain, helped Colorado Springs police officers
deal with tragedy.
In the days before his death Tuesday at age 84,
Bloor was bedridden from a series of strokes, but
still piling comfort and humor on friends and family
who had come to say goodbye.
“I can tell you this, he was just as funny as
always. He didn’t fear death, his faith was that
strong,” said John Solano, a minister of pastoral
care at Sunrise United Methodist Church where Bloor
attended. “We were joking as usual. He told
me, |
‘Boy, they are scraping
the bottom to have you come visit.’ I told him, ‘Well, no
one else would come."
Of course, everyone who could, did come to see Bloor — the
former Columbus, Ohio, boy who felt a calling to God as a
youth and attended Ohio State University, where he was on
the wrestling team, and told Phoebe, his wife-to-be that she
should get used to living in a fishbowl because he was going
to be a minister.
They married in 1952, had three daughters Kim McCauley of
Louisville, Colo. Donna Myers of northern Virginia, and
Theresa Bloor of Colorado Springs, five grandchildren and
two great grandchildren. Phoebe Bloor, who taught school
locally for many years, died in 2001.
Bloor enlisted in the paratroopers on an 18-month program in
1946, then went to OSU on the GI Bill. Later, he worked on a
master’s degree at Boston University in the early 1950s —
the same time that Martin Luther King was getting a
doctorate there, and the two occasionally had dinner
together.
Bloor had the opportunity to become an Army chaplain and did
that instead of finishing his master’s degree, his daughters
said.
He played football with a team put together by Gen. William
Westmoreland. “Mom always told the story about how the
general’s wife Kitsy got so excited when dad was running for
a touchdown that she ran out on the field. But he fell short
at the five yard line,” said McCauley.
In Germany, one of Bloor’s military chaplain duties was
advisor to the European chapter of the Protestant Women of
the Chapel, recalled Dot Solano, who met Bloor years ago
through the organization.
“He was very supportive of what we were doing,” she said. At
one conference, the keynote speaker was Western singer and
actress Dale Evans, who had no way to get to the airport.
“Don was always willing to help us with anything and said he
would chauffeur her, and so we did.”
He retired as a lieutenant colonel with many service awards
after 20 years. His last duty was at Fort Carson.
Not to sit on his laurels, he went on to serve as pastor at
area churches, including St. Paul’s United Methodist Church,
1975-1978, and Stratmoor Hills United Methodist Church,
1978-1990.
“After than he even founded a church in a truck stop,” noted
Marvin Vose, superintendent of the Sunshine District, United
Methodist Church. That church, Northgate United
Methodist Church, eventually morphed into Tri-Lakes United
Methodist Church in Monument.
“He never met a stranger,” Vose said. “He had a big booming
voice that was good for the pulpit. No one went to sleep. He
was at Stratmoor a long time, and really loved that little
church. It was a good fit because there were a lot of folks
from Fort Carson that went there. And they loved him.”
He also served as a volunteer chaplain for the Colorado
Springs Police Department for about 17 years, going out on
calls with the officers, and “helping them and the community
when they were crushed by the issues in life,” said Carl
Nelson, another longtime volunteer.
Nelson echoed what many others said about Bloor: “He
was diligent, he did what he said he would do, he had faith
and he was always available to everyone.” |
