Delma Gean Vanscoy, 63, of
Gauley Bridge, died July 20, 2010, at Plateau Medical Center
in Oak Hill.
Born Sept. 3, 1946, at Elkins, she was the daughter of the
late Delbert Glen and Wilda Jane Isner Vanscoy. She also was
preceded in death by her brother, James Vanscoy.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving: brothers, Jerry Vanscoy and Walter Vanscoy; and
sisters, Mary Katherine Waybright and Sandra V. Teter.
Ms. Vanscoy was cremated. There will be no visitation or
service. |

Mary Katherine Vanscoy Waybright,
63, a resident of Elkins, passed from this life Saturday,
Aug. 27, 2011, surrounded by her family at the home of her
son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Debbie Waybright, where
she had resided for the last three years.
She was born Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1948, at Elkins, a daughter
of the late Delbert and Wilda Vanscoy.
Left to cherish Mary's memory are three sons, Terry
Waybright and wife, Debbie, of Elkins, Troy Waybright and
wife, Kathy, of Pheasant Run and Roy Glenn Waybright of
Elkins; one daughter, Holly Chewning and husband, Thurman
Jr., of Elkins; one sister, Sandra Teter; two brothers,
Jerry Vanscoy and Walter Vanscoy; three grandsons, Dillion
Waybright, Douglas Waybright and Mitchell White; four
granddaughters, Brittany, Tosha, Caitlin and Kiana; three
stepgrandsons, Jeff, Sherman and Mike; one great-grandson,
Heath Mitchell; one great-granddaughter, Kayleigh Katherine;
and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Delma Leary; one
brother, James Vanscoy; and one grandson, Dustin Waybright.
Mary attended the schools of Randolph County and was a
homemaker. She enjoyed walking, the outdoors, listening to
wind chimes and spending time with her grandchildren. She
loved her family very much and will be greatly missed.
There will be a visitation Wednesday, Aug. 31, from noon
until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. A.H. Belt will
officiate and interment will follow in Mouse Cemetery at
Cravensdale.
The Randolph Funeral Home and Cremation Services has been
entrusted with the arrangements for Mary Katherine Vanscoy
Waybright. |

DUSTIN LEE WAYBRIGHT, age 19
years, a resident of the Pheasant Run Community, Kerens, WV
departed this life early Sunday morning, April 17, 2011.
Death was attributed from injuries sustained in an
automobile accident.
He was born Tuesday, December 31, 1991 at Elkins, WV a son
of Troy Waybright and Katherine “Kathy” Carr Waybright, who
survive at Parsons. Also surviving are two brothers, Dillon
Waybright, Montrose; Douglas Waybright, Parsons; his
maternal grandparents, Alvie and Twila Carr, Montrose; his
paternal grandparents, Roy and Lois Waybright, Kerens; Mary
Waybright, Elkins; his maternal great grandmother, Anna
Carr, Parsons; three uncles and two aunts, Terry and Debbie
Waybright; Roy G. Waybright, Pamela and Bill Howell; and
Holly and Therman Chewning, all of Elkins; lots of cousins
and friends that he was very close too as well as being
loved by special friends of the family, Brian and Missy
Jones and children; and Dale, Robin and Evan Jones.
Preceding him in death are his paternal great grandparents,
Delbert and Wilda Isner Vanscoy; and Bricel and Dolly
Waybright; and his maternal great grandfather, Alvie Carr;
and Luke and Liza Katherine Cross.
He was a graduate of Tucker County High School with the
Class of 2010, loved outdoor activities such as hunting,
fishing, camping, muding, watching NASCAR with his father,
ATV riding and hanging out with family and friends.
Dustin was a fun loving free spirit that was loved and will
be missed by many. The family will receive friends at the
Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 7 PM, Tuesday.
Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel,
Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 2:30 PM. The Rev. Stephen W.
Pyle will officiate and interment will follow at the Mouse
Cemetery at Cravensdale, WV. |

Obituary for Don Phares |
Don Phares, 92, a long time
resident of Randolph County, and a resident of the
Harpertown Road, departed this life at 1:38 p.m. Saturday,
May 25, 2002, at his residence. He had been in declining
health.
He was born on Sept. 6, 1909, at Bushy Run, in Pendleton
County, the 12th child of Isaac Phares and Carrie Boggs
Phares.
He was twice married. First, he was married to the former
Dollie M. Vanscoy, who preceded him in death, and then he
was married to Virgie E. Canfield (nee
Weese), who also preceded him in
death.
Surviving are five sons, Isaac Phares Jr., Miami, Fla., John
and Bill Phares, both of Elyria, Ohio, Don Phares Jr.,
Elkins, and Jim Phares, Girard, Ohio; nine daughters, Carrie
Ellen Quattro, Columbiana, Ohio, Ethel Hazelwood, Lake City,
Fla., Ina Palmer and Regina Ruth Spencer, both of Elyria,
Ohio, Yvonne Phillips, Edgewater, Fla., Bobbie Haddox, Fla.,
Johnnie Minear, Elkins, Polly Minear, Michigan, and Nancy
Minear, Elkins; one stepson, Lacy Canfield, Belington; two
stepdaughters, Thelma Canfield Higgins, Buckhannon, and
Wilma L. Canfield Biller, Kerens; one sister, Ruth Phares
Sommerville, Elkins; 25 grandchildren, 39
great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren,
step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Mae Phares
Hohman; five brothers, Snowden, Frank, Clarence, Emerson and
Dewey Phares; and five sisters, Nellie Vance, Ina Moran,
Elaine Pressau Vance, Ethel Duckworth Moore and Noami
Collett.
Mr. Phares was a farmer, coal miner, railroad worker, and
retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways. He
was a member of Elkins Church of the Brethren.
Friends will be received at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home on
Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Final rites will be conducted
from the funeral home chapel Friday at 2 p.m. The Rev.
Walter H. Blough will officiate and interment will follow at
Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins. |

Clifford J. Hohman, Jr., age 60, of Elyria, passed
away Thursday, May 30, 2019.
He was born in Elkins, West Virginia, the son of
Clifford J. Hohman Sr. and the late Bobbie Phares
Hohman. He graduated from Elyria High School and
enlisted in the US Army. He was honorably discharged
as a disabled veteran.
Cliff is the loving step-son of Don Phares and Joann
Kilch; father of Jon B. Wagner; grandfather of Jon
Bradley Wagner, Jr.; dear brother of Bobbie (Mark)
Haddox, Sarah (Jack) Corell, |
Cheryl (Randy) Pate, Donnie
Phares, Darrin Phares, Angel Phares and Meryl Gassonale;
uncle of many; grandson of the late Don and Dollie Phares.
Cliff was a member of both North Ridgeville VFW Post 9871
and American Legion Post 717. A sportsman, he was an avid
hunter, fisherman and boater. He will be remembered for his
devout faith to God.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at
11AM at Sunset Memorial Park. The procession will form at
the Sunset Chapel, 6245 Columbia Rd., North Olmsted. Please
arrive by 10:45AM. |

Bernice "Leigh" Vanscoy Simmons,
89, a resident of the Cravensdale community, Elkins,
departed this life late Monday evening, April 16, 2012, at
her home. She had been in declining health for the past
year.
She was born Wednesday, Oct. 4, 1922, at Lower Cheat, a
daughter of the late Brooksie E. and Vernia E. Kittle[sic]
Vanscoy.
On Dec. 30, 1962, at Mountain Lake Park, Md., she was
married to Arley I. Simmons, who survives. They had
celebrated 49 years of marriage.
Also surviving are two sons, Gary L. Smith of Elkins
and Michael A. Smith and wife, Dixie, of Lewisburg; |
four
daughters, Carol M. Wolfe and husband, Gerald, of Elkins,
Linda Boyles and husband, David, of Fairborne, Ohio, Barbara
L. Wiseman and husband, Gary, of Elkins and June A. Nixon
and husband, Jay, of Buckhannon; and 13 grandchildren,
several great-grandchildren and several
great-great-grandchildren.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Preceding her in death are one daughter, Delaine Ellen
Riffle; one brother, Delbert Vanscoy; one sister, Dolly
Phares; one grandson, Scott Boyles; and one infant
great-granddaughter.
She attended the school at Timbucto, Randolph County, was a
homemaker and was the manager of the Elkins Coin Laundry on
Harrison Avenue for many years. She was a member of the
Beverly Community Church. She was an avid songwriter and was
a self-taught piano player who could also play guitar and
mandolin.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home
Funeral Home of Elkins from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Final
rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel Friday,
April 20, at 2 p.m. Pastor Michael Boggs will officiate and
interment will follow in American Legion's Little Arlington
Cemetery at Cravensdale.

Phyllis Collins Johnson, 55,
passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at her home. She was
born in Augusta, GA and was the daughter of the late Delaine
Riffle. Phyllis worked for the Alamance-Burlington School
System for over 20 years as a teacher assistant at both
Alexander Wilson and Harvey Newlin Elementary Schools. She
was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who truly enjoyed
spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband, Mark Johnson; daughters,
Krysta Johnson and Nicole Brakeman (Jonathan);
grandchildren, Wyatt, Bryleigh and Ayden, and a brother,
Michael Collins (Kathy). She was preceded in death by her
mother and a daughter, Amanda Johnson.
A memorial gathering will be held 6-8 PM Thursday at Lowe

Harry Vanscoy
- b. 1927, WV. Am unable to find any
other information on this Harry Vanscoy who only appears in the 1940
Census. It is unknown where he was in the 1930 Census.
The name Harry could be a middle name. Or at the time I was
updating this page in 2020, this Harry could still be alive in his 90's.
There is also the possibility that this Harry was not actually a son but
someone else's child adopted by Erastus and Vernia. In the
obituary for Bernice above, there is no mention of a brother named
Harry. There is also the possibility that this Harry died young
and was not known to the grandchildren of Erastus and Vernia.
This Harry is NOT a Harry Leroy
Vanscoy who was born Dec 28, 1926 and died in 2007. Everyone on
ancestry.com has made this assumption, which is wrong. This
particular Harry
Leroy Vanscoy's father was, James Alba Vanscoy, not Erastus. |
