Mr. Charles Kenneth "Cooney" Scott, age 95 years, a resident of Coalton, passed away Thursday evening, August 11, 2005 in the Davis Memorial Hospital Emergency Department.

He was born April 26, 1910 at Coalton, a son of the late John K. and Nora Condrey Scott. On September 8, 1933, he was married to the former Mary Louise Phillips who preceded him in death.

Surviving are five sons, John Kenneth Scott and wife Maryann of Vienna, OH, Robert Leonard Scott and wife Rosalee, Richard Scott and wife Linda, and James David Scott and wife Bertha all of Coalton, Robert Lee Scott and wife Millie of Moorefield, WV. Two daughters, Eleanor Zirkle and husband Gordon of Coalton and Ann Teter and Husband Earle of Elkins. Nineteen grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren and twelve great-great grandchildren also survive.

Also preceding him in death was one son Frankie Scott, two grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.

Mr. Scott had worked as a coalminer and was retired from the W.V. Department of Highways at Coalton. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved driving in the country.

Friends may call from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM Sunday, August 14, 2005 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, August 15th from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Guy Perkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Phillips Cemetery near Jimtown. John K “Scotty” Scott, 71, of Vienna Twp., Ohio, died at his residence at 2:55 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, following a short illness.

He was born Sept. 1, 1934, at Mabie, the son of Charles and Mary Phillips Scott.

A Howland and Vienna, Ohio, resident for many years, he was employed as a crane operator at US Steel McDonald Works, retiring in 1980. Following retirement, he worked for Fanta Sea Pools for 11 years and for Builders Plus for two years. Scotty was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and a member of the National Rifle Association and the Roaring Creek Hunting Club. He enjoyed boxing and stock car racing. He was of the Catholic faith.

He is survived by his wife, Maryan Bays Peyatt Scott, whom he married Feb. 21, 1997; and five daughters, Cathy Wilson, Julie Scott and her companion, John Allen Walker, and Mary Pritchard, all of Warren, Ohio, Mimi Cyphert and her companion, Wally, of Niles, Ohio, and Margaret Dempsey and husband, Gary, of Kinsman, Ohio. Also surviving are two stepsons, Carl Peyatt Jr. of Summersville and Andrew Peyatt of Richwood; two sisters, Annie (Earl) Teter of Elkins and Eleanora (French) Zirkle of Coalton; and four brothers, Richard (Linda) Scott, Robert (Rosie) Scott, Jimmy (Bertha) Scott, all of Coalton, and Bob Scott of Moorefield. He also leaves 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and 19 stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, John “Slugger” Scott Jr. and David “Skip” Scott; two grandsons, David and Stevie; a great-granddaughter, Mariah; and a stepgrandson, Humphrey.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Roberts-Clark Chapel in Warren, Ohio, where friends will be received from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. The Rev. James Walker will officiate. Interment will be in Kerr Cemetery in Weathersfield Twp. Roberts-Clark Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. From 11 Jan 2006.

Shawn Michael Scott, 43, of Warren, OH died April 2, 2016 at home.

He was born January 24, 1973 in Warren, OH, a son of the late John K. Scott Jr. and Debra (Hoover) Scott.

Shawn worked on and off through the years but most recently as a carpenter. Left to cherish his memories is his mother, Debra (Hoover) Scott of Niles, OH, companion of 12 years, Tinker [or Edith] Smith, grandson, Isaiah, step-father, Gary Scott, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, uncle, and grandparents. Services will be held at 7:00 pm on Friday, April 8, 2016 at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, where Pastor Jim Dittmar will officiate. Friends may call from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on April 8, 2016 at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home.

Vernon, Ohio – Cody James Dempsey, age 25, died on Friday, September 26, 2014 at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Youngstown, Ohio.

He was born on July 30, 1989, in Youngstown, Ohio, a son of Margaret Annette (Scott) Dempsey and Gary W. Dempsey. Cody was a 2007 graduate of Joseph Badger High School and of Trumbull Career & Technical Center where he took Auto Body Classes.
For the past four years he worked as a Burn Table Operator for International Steel & Counterweight of Youngstown, Ohio. Cody enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing his guitar and song writing.

He is preceded in death by an infant brother, Stephen Bloomquist; grandparents, John & Lillian Scott and his Uncle Roger.

Survivors include his mother, Penny A. Dempsey of Warren, Ohio; his father, Gary W. Dempsey of Vernon, Ohio; a sister, Stephanie L. (Henry) Perez of Champion, Ohio; a niece Kylie Patton of Champion, Ohio; his grandmother, Roxie Rodebaugh of Vernon, Ohio; his girlfriend Danielle Hall of Sharon, Pennsylvania and her three children, Natalie, Isaac and Abygail and many aunts and uncles.

A Graveside service will be held on Friday, October 3, 2014 at 11:00am at West View Cemetery, State Route 7, Vernon, Ohio. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, October 2nd from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Baumgardner Funeral & Cremation Service, 8569 Main Street, Kinsman, Ohio.
 
Prosecutor's investigation clears officers in Route 11 fatal shooting

In a 900 page report issued on Thursday, Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins has concluded that police were justified in fatally shooting a Kinsman man along State Route 11 last September.

Twenty-five-year-old Cody Dempsey was shot several times after authorities chased him as he drove a stolen 1983 Cadillac El Dorado on Route 11 until the car's tires were flattened by spike strips placed along the roadway in Liberty.

According to a summary of the report, Dempsey repeatedly ignored commands to show his hands and exit the vehicle.

Weathersfield Police Officer Daniel Lowery told investigators that he was between eight and ten feet from the car when he saw Dempsey pointing a gun to his own head.

Lowery says Dempsey lowered the gun to his chin, then pointed it at fellow Weathersfield Officer Kris Hodge.

In the report, that's when Officer Lowery said, "Tat's when I decided I am shooting". Lowery told investigators he shot Dempsey because he believed Dempsey was going to shoot Officer Hodge.

Lowery, who is a lieutenant with the Weathersfield Fire Department, retrieved his medical kit from his cruiser and began administering first aid to Dempsey who later died at St. Elizabeth Hospital.

A truck driver whose rig had been stopped behind the nine cruisers and the stolen Cadillac told investigators that he saw Dempsey turn toward the officers prior to the gunshots. He said he believed that officer's actions were justified based on what he had observed.

The Prosecutor's report cited findings from a previous investigation conducted by the Ohio Highway Patrol which concluded that Dempsey had been having major problems in his life for years leading up to the shooting.

In December 2005, deputies were called to an address in Vernon Township in reference to Cody Dempsey threatening suicide.

In March 2012, Dempsey was admitted to St. Joseph's hospital for a drug overdose. According to medial records, Dempsey stated that he had "7 beers, smoked crack and did heroin".

On September 21, five days before the shooting, investigators say Dempsey's girlfriend broke up with him because of his drug addiction.

Dempsey left a voice message on his former girlfriend's phone at about the same time the deputy spotted him driving the stolen Cadillac on September 26.

According to investigators, Dempsey said, "Hello, they are here, they are here. I am going to jail but they are probably going to kill me. Anyway, love ya."

Based on the investigation, Watkins says there will be no presentment to the Trumbull County Grand Jury.

Several agencies, including the Ohio Highway Patrol, the Trumbull County Sheriff's Department and several township police departments were involved in the chase and confrontation, which shut down traffic for most of the day.

There are many rooms in my Father’s home, I will prepare a place for you, and when everything is ready I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me. John 14.

On Friday, February 19, 2010 our Father took home Eleanora Scott Zirkle of Coalton, WV.

Eleanora was born December 25, 1935. She was the daughter of the late Charles “Coonie” and Mary Scott of Coalton, WV. On February 28, 1955 she married Gordon French Zirkle who preceded her in death August of 2006.

Eleanora was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Left to cherish her memories are two daughters, Sue Huffman and husband George of Coalton, with whom she resided the past four years, until the time of her death; Alice Racic and husband Steve, of Kenansville, NC, four brothers; Bob Scott and wife Rosalee, Dick Scott and Jimmy Scott and wife Bertha all of Coalton and Bobby Scott and wife Mille of Moorefield, WV.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frankie Scott and John K. Scott and one sister, Ann Teter.

She is also survived by five grandchildren: Buffy Chenoweth and husband Jonathan of Elkins, Susan Bohan and husband Charlie, Junior, WV, Lee Channell and wife Donna, Mabie, Andrea Guy and husband Jonathan , Kenansville, NC, Joshua Pingley, Beverly, WV and one Step-grandson Shawn Racic of Pittsburgh, PA., six great-grandchildren, Justin and Katelynn Chenoweth, Dakota Bohan and Taylor, Melody and Jacob Channell. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Eleanora was a member of the Nazarene Church of Junior where she was very active and devoted until the time of her illness.

We would like to thank Hospice Care for all their loving care and compassion. Also to daughter Sue and husband George for their endless hours of great compassion and loving care for the past four years. As well as granddaughter Buffy Chenoweth and husband Jonathan and their two children Justin and Katelynn. We will be forever grateful.

Friends may call from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Sunday, February 21, 2010 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday from the funeral home chapel with Sister Mary Ella Morrison OP. officiating. Interment will follow in the Phillips Cemetery at Jimtown. The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Eleanora Zirkle.

Virginia Sue Zirkle Huffman, 66, a resident of Coalton, passed from this life Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at Davis Medical Center in Elkins. She had been in her usual health and death was unexpected.

Sue was born Wednesday, April 25, 1956, in Elkins, a daughter of the late Gordon “French” Zirkle and Eleanora Scott Zirkle. She married George Huffman who survives at home.

Also left to cherish her memory are three children, Susan Bohan and husband Charlie of Junior, Buffy Chenoweth and husband Jonathan of Elkins, and Lee Channell of Mabie,
six grandchildren, Justin Chenoweth, Katie Cool and husband Dylan, Dakota Bohan and wife Bre’Auna, Melody and Jacob Ricucci, Taylor Channell, two great-grandchildren, Jaxson Chenoweth and Hudson Cool, and one sister Alice Racic and husband Steve of NC.

Preceding her in death besides her parents was Tom Channell Jr., the father of her children.

Sue attended the schools of Randolph County and had been employed as a homemaker for Select In Home Services. She enjoyed flower gardening. Her favorite thing to do was to spend time with her kids and grandchildren especially sitting around a bonfire.

Sue’s request for cremation was honored and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Ann Teter, age 66 years, a resident of Elkins, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2007 at her home.

She was born July 30, 1941 at Coalton, a daughter of the late Charles K. and Mary Louise Phillips Scott. On February 6, 1960 she was married to Earl E. Teter who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Richard Teter and wife Tonia and Robert Teter and wife Kim of Elkins, a daughter, Lora Hedrick and husband Steve, Beverly, four brothers, Richard, Robert and James Scott all of Coalton and Bobby Scott of Moorefield, one sister, Elanor Zirkle, Coalton, four grandchildren, Ashley and Amy Teter, Stacey and Michael Lewis a great-granddaughter, Haylie Young and her father-in-law, Raymond Teter. Two brothers preceded her in death, John and Franky Scott.
Mrs. Teter was a homemaker.

Friends may call from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 5th from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Jack Howell officiating.

Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman. Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice Care Corporation, PO Box 760, Arthurdale, WV 26520 in memory of Mrs. Teter. Robert Leonard “Bob” Scott, 78, a resident of Coalton, passed from this life Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2021, at his residence.

Bob was born June, 29, 1943 at Coalton, West Virginia, a son of the late Charles K. Scott and the late Mary L. Phillips Scott.

He was married to Rosalee White Scott, who preceded him in death Feb. 19, 2020.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, daughters, Mary Beth Sparks and husband, John, of Dailey, West Virginia, Kimberly Ann Bennett and husband, Jon, of Jimtown, West Virginia, Bobbi Jean George and husband, Randy, of Coalton, West Virginia and Eleanora Marie Cummings and husband, Michael, Flatwoods, of West Virginia; brothers, Richard Scott and James D. Scott, all of Coalton, West Virginia, and Robert L. Scott, of Moorfield, West Virginia. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Scott was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacqueline Scott White, brothers, John K. Scott and Frankie Scott, sisters, Eleanor Zirkle and Ann Teter; and a granddaughter, Amber Cummings.

Bob attended the schools or Randolph County and was a veteran of the United Stated Army. He was employed as a coalminer for many years prior to his retirement and was a longtime member and president of the Roaring Creek Hunting Club.

Jackie was born Saturday, Jan. 8, 1966, a daughter of the late Rosalee Scott White and Robert “Bob” Leonard Scott, who survives. She had never married.

Left to cherish Jackie’s memory are four siblings, Mary Beth Sparks and husband, John, of Dailey, Kimberly Ann Bennett and husband, Jon, of Jimtown, Bobbi Jean George and husband, Randy, of Coalton,
and Eleanora Marie Cummings and husband, Michael, of Flatwoods; 11 nieces and nephews; and six great-nieces and nephews.

Jackie attended the schools of Randolph County. She enjoyed being a part of Danced with Angel Wings, participating in bowling and basketball and watching wrestling, where she enjoyed watching Triple H.

WARREN - Jessie N. Phillips- Logue, 78, passed away at 5:10AM Thursday, January 22, 2009 in Lake Vista of Cortland.

Jessie was born October 2, 1930 in Kedron, WV the daughter of the late Albert T. and Elsie (Hornbeck) Nethken. Jessie was a graduate of Coalton High School in West Virginia and attended Davis & Elkins College before coming to Ohio in 1950. Jessie retired from Peerless Winsmith on December 1, 1990 where she worked for 33 years. She also was a former school teacher in West Virginia. Jesse was a member of the Royal Arcanum Lodge.

Jessie is survived by her second husband Richard A. Logue Sr. whom she married on November 20, 1982 in Southington Christian Church; five daughters Rosemary (Donald) Minton of Lordstown; Beverly (George) Pearce; Deborah (Jay) Whitmore; Vickie (James III) Farmer all of Southington and Joyce (David) Brown of Champion;
two stepchildren Richard A. (Mary Ann) Logue Jr. of Warren and Diane (Ed) Calain of Lordstown; a brother Howard Weese Nethken of Mabie, WV; four sisters Jane (Dickson) Helmick of Warren; Edith (Donald) Ossman of Charlotte, NC; Rosie (Stanley) Bland of Brunswick, OH and Dove Calain of Champion; a sister-in-law Lucille M. Visitation for family and friends will take place on Sunday, January 25, 2009 from 2 until 4 PM in the Roberts Clark Funeral Chapel 180 Garfield Drive NE, Warren, OH 44483 and again on Monday, January 26, 2009 from 10AM until the hour of service at the church. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, January 26, 2009 at 11AM in the Southington Christian Church 3285 St Rt 534 Southington, OH 44470. Interment will follow in Southington Reformed Cemetery.
