Ohio Biographical
Sketches, 1876 |
|
Name: Hon. John Waterman Okey
Lawyer and Jurist, was born, January 3, 1827, at
Woodsfield, Monroe county, Ohio, and is a son of
Cornelius Okey, for a long time representative from
that county in the General Assembly of the State;
and his grandfather, Hon. Leven Okey, was one of the
Associate Judges of the same county for many years.
He was educated at the Monroe Academy, and also
received private instruction. Having selected the
law for his future calling, after a due course of
reading, he was admitted to the bar by the Supreme
Court of Ohio, at Cambridge, on 22d October, 1849,
and at once entered upon the practice of his
profession. He was appointed Probate Judge of Monroe
county in October, 1853, and was elected to the same
office in October, 1854. Two years thereafter he was
elected Judge of the Court of Common Pleas, and
having held that position for the term of five
years, was re-elected in October, 1861. In March,
1865, he removed to Cincinnati, where he now
resides.
He assisted in the preparation of Gholson and Okey's
Digest of Reports,
published in 1867, and in Okey and Miller's
Municipal Law, issued in 1869.
He was appointed, March 27th, 1875, in connection
with Hon. M. A. Dougherty and Judge Day,
Commissioner to revise and codify the general laws
of the State, on which work they are at present
engaged (December, 1875). His political creed is
that taught by the Democratic party.
He was married, March, 1849, to Miss Bloor, of
Belmont county, Ohio.

Obituary for George Hazard Lucktenberg
http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/spartanburg/obituary.aspx?pid=172983127 |
|
 |
SPARTANBURG, SC--George Lucktenberg passed away of
natural causes on Sunday, October 26, 2014. George
Lucktenberg's professional career spanned well over
60 years. He was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1930 to
Kathryn and Dewey Lucktenberg.
Very much a self-made musician, he was the first in
his family to graduate from college, receiving his
doctorate from Florida State University. |
Dr. Lucktenberg was on the front
edge of the Historical Performance Practice movement and was
renowned for bringing historical keyboard performances to
the Southeastern United States in the 1960's. He was a
recitalist with his wife Jerrie Cadek Lucktenberg, carting a
remarkable collection of historical instruments to each
venue to the delight of his audiences.
He performed nationally and internationally, from Vienna to
Weill Hall in New York, to kindergarteners in the South
Carolina public school system. A devoted teacher and
enthusiast for his niche, he conducted a series of tours of
European keyboard collections in the late 1970's.
Publications and discography include Three Centuries of
French Harpsichord Music, edited works by Handel and Haydn,
Bach for Piano Ensemble, and a seminal book with Edward
Kottick, Early Keyboard Instruments in European Museums
(1997).
George had a longstanding affiliation with the Music
Teachers' National Association. He founded the South
Carolina MTA chapter in 1960 where he developed the bylaws
and Constitution, and held the presidency for its first
three years. In addition to his work with MTNA he was a
founding member of the Southeastern Historical Keyboard
Society (now the Historical Keyboard Society of North
America) and was the first executive director of the
Aliénor Harpsichord Composition Competition.
Dr. Lucktenberg served on the faculty at Converse College
for 30 years and 52 summers on the faculty at the
Interlochen Arts Camp. He joined Reinhardt University in
1995, bringing with him an extraordinary collection of
instruments, from original historical keyboards to the
'Toscanini Steinway,' featured in performances with the NBC
Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Lucktenberg retired at the age of 83
in 2013. His last public performance was February 17 of that
year at Reinhardt's Falany Performing Arts Center.
George is predeceased by his brother, William Lucktenberg,
and is survived by his sister-in-law, Jean Lucktenberg of
Columbus, OH, and by children Judith Arrants (Bill) of
Gatlinburg, TN, Kathryn Lucktenberg (Steven Pologe) of
Eugene, OR, and Ted Lucktenberg (Karen) of Spartanburg, SC.
He is also survived by five grandchildren, Kate Arrants
Petrucci, John Arrants, Jonas Pologe, Stuart Lucktenberg and
Hope Lucktenberg.

About a conflict of
birth date and birth location for Rex. On the WWI
Registration, Rex gives his birth date as Jul 11, 1878. On
his marriage certificate to Ethel Brill, he gives his birth
location as Columbus, OH. The conflict occurs on his death
certificate where his step-mother is providing the information
after his death. She got the birth date and location wrong
and did not even know his mother's name. The death
certificate IS NOT a reliable source of information in this
case. |

1880 - Census - When I first looked
for Trevitt in the 1880 Census, I could not find him. When I saw
the grave marker for Trevitt and Mame, I discovered that the couple had
one other son, Graham. Searching for a Graham Okey in the 1880
Census, there was only one. Living in Columbus, OH was a Fred Okey
with a son named Graham. For some reason Trevitt's name was
recorded as "Fred". Both the ages match exactly. Mame was either
staying with her family when the Census taker arrived or was visiting. |

Willard / William M Okey |
| |
About Willard's name. If Willard had only showed up once and the
rest of the time it was William, I would go with William. However,
Willard comes up several times where Willard is providing the
information, like his marriage license. Willard is also seen
on the CA birth index, the 1910 Census and the 1930 Census. Toward
the end of his life, William was used on the SSDI and the CA death
index. |
