Funeral services for Russell Alfred Gooden, Sr., owner of Gooden's Discount Store, will be held here at 2 P.M. tomorrow at the Tomblyn funeral establishment.

Mr. Gooden, who was 62 and was a native of Elkins, died Tuesday after a brief illness. Mr. Gooden was married to the former Mildred Beavers, who died in 1966.

He is survived by his second wife, the former Ina Louk; a son, Russell A. Gooden, Jr., of Severna Park, Md., two daughters, Mrs. John Huffman, of Pasadena, Md., and Mrs. Charles Leary, of Baltimore; three stepsons, Ralph and Franklin Fortney and Robert Simmons, all of Elkins; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Helen White, of Canton, Ohio, and Mrs. Alice Parsons, of Parsons, W Va. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Poling, of Elkins, and Mrs. Opal Heabner. of French Creek, WVa., four grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.

Charles W. Leary, also known as Buck Leary, passed away on August 6, 2014.

Charles was born in Elkins, West Virginia to the late Abraham and Pauline Leary. He was called "The Cat Man" because he loved his cats as well as old country music and wrestling.

Mr. Leary is survived by his son, David W. Leary of Glen Burnie; daughter, Michele Meier of New Freedom, PA; brother, Richard Leary of Auburn, GA; sister, Dorothy Manser of Glen Burnie and 4 grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Charles is preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann Leary (nee Gooden) and his 2 sisters, Willa Jean and Olive Yost.

Opal Catherine Gooden Heavner, age 93, of Buckhannon, WV, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, October 24, 2010, at St. Joseph Hospital Nursing Care Facility, after a long illness. Opal was born on August 28, 1917, in Randolph County, a daughter of the late Perry and Lillie Collett Gooden. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Heavner, in 1973. Also preceding her in death was a twin brother Okey, who died in infancy, a brother Russell Gooden, and one sister, Mabel Gooden Poling.

She is survived by two daughters, Christine and husband Kenney McKisic of French Creek, and Evelyn and husband Harold Dean of Taylors, South Carolina; two sons, Bob and wife Betty Heavner of Buckhannon, and Gaylord and wife Naomi Heavner of Buckhannon. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved deeply.
Opal was a member of the Frenchton United Methodist Church. She loved cooking for others. She cooked for the St. Joseph’s Hospital and owned and operated her own restaurant, the Pioneer, in French Creek. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing, and quilting. For many years she quilted for Cabin Creek Quilting Company. She loved doing anything that was a service to others, but her favorite pastime was sitting on the front porch waving at people as they passed by. Opal will be dearly missed by her friends and family.

Friends will be received on Monday, October 25, 2010 from 5-8 P.M. at the Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at the Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel with Pastor David Jessie officiating. Interment will follow in the Point Pleasant Cemetery in Abbott, WV. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Upshur Parish House at 68 College Ave., Buckhannon, WV or the Salvation Army at 21 N. Spring St., Buckhannon, WV.

Evelyn Mae Heavner Dean, 83, loving wife of 65 years to Harold Dean, of 200 Meridian Ave., Taylors, SC, went home to be with the Lord on February 17, 2018, at her residence surrounded by her beloved family.

Born in Frenchton, WV, on July 11, 1934, Evelyn was the daughter of the late Floyd James Heavner and Opal Katherine Gooden Heavner. She graduated from Buckhannon-Upshur High School in West Virginia and attended West Virginia State University. Evelyn then began her career as a Bookkeeper in the Real Estate Industry. She had a Baptist affiliation and an evangelistic heart having worked with several ministries in her life.
Her favorite time of life was traveling with her husband Harold, working with home schoolers with the Abeka Ministries.

In addition to her husband Harold, Evelyn is survived by her two sons, Steven Dean and spouse Joy of Indianapolis, IN, and James Dale Dean and spouse Elisa of Anderson, SC; two daughters, Virginia Katherine Vernon and spouse William of Pearl River, LA, and Cheryl Ann Dean of Taylors, SC; two brothers, Robert Heavner and spouse Betty and Gaylord Heavner and spouse Naomi, both of Buckhannon, WV; sister, Christine McKisic and spouse Kenny of French Creek, WV; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 20, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. following visitation on Tuesday in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with her son, Reverend Steven Dean officiating. Interment will take place on Wednesday, February 21, at 1:00 p.m. in the Committal Shelter at M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Evelyn’s honor to Miracle Hill Ministries, 490 S. Pleasantburg Dr., Greenville, SC 29602.

Gaylord Ray Heavner, age 78, of College Avenue, Buckhannon, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Friday, March 11, 2022, at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg.

He was born on June 15, 1943, at Frenchton, a son of the late Floyd James and Opal Catherine Gooden Heavner.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Naomi; one daughter Angela Heavner of Buckhannon; one son Shane Heavner of Buckhannon; five grandsons: Preston Surface (Janine) of Morgantown,
Parker Surface (Morgan) of Morgantown, Peyton Surface (Gabrielle) of Buckhannon, and Caleb and Colin Heavner both of Buckhannon; one sister Christine McKisic (Kenny); one brother Robert Heavner (Betty) of Buckhannon; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one sister Evelyn Dean.

Gaylord lived his life according to God’s commandment by quietly giving to those in need. Before his first cup of coffee each morning, he prayed for his family and friends and shared his love for the Lord by posting daily scriptures on social media in hopes of reaching others. His love for people carried through to his profession where he once drove to Mercer County during a blizzard to help a young family with a newborn baby who needed their furnace fixed. He was a master electrician all his adult life and worked for several companies, but eventually retired from his own business.

He was a United States Navy veteran, having served aboard the destroyer USS Braine.

In honoring his wishes, no services will be held. The Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel will conduct the services for their beloved uncle.
