Mr. Billy Tom Ward of Lena, MS,
84, passed away on July 28, 2016, at the Baptist Medical
Center in Jackson, MS, following an extended illness.
Burial will be in the Lena Cemetery.
Billy Tom was born on February 14, 1932 in Lena, MS to Luna
Dumas and Henry Ward. He grew up in a loving family and he
attended Lena School. Upon graduating in 1950, he entered
the Navy in December and served until 1954. After serving in
the Navy, he attended the University of Southern Mississippi
where he graduated with a Master's Degree in Education in
1965. Billy Tom remained an avid fan and contributor to USM
for life and was also a member of the Circle of Champions.
During his adult life, Billy Tom began his career as a
teacher and basketball coach at Lena High School until 1963.
He taught at Carthage High School and Junior High School
from 1963 until 1966. In 1966, he became the Principal of
Lena School for one year. Following being the Principal, he
became the Title One Coordinator and Assistant
Superintendent of Carthage School District from 1967 until
1987. In 1987 he became the Title One Coordinator and
Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent until 1989.
Retiring in 1989 from the school system, Billy Tom served as
the Drug Free Coordinator and personnel director from 1989
until 1996. He served as the Mayor of Lena, MS from July of
1973 to 1981.
Billy Tom was a world traveler. He traveled to many
different countries and all fifty states over the years.
Traveling, good food, and going to ball games was his
passion.
On August 10, 1994, Billy Tom married the love of his life,
Connie Townsend of Morton, MS, and they were married for
twenty-two years.
A devoted Christian, Billy Tom was a member of Lena Baptist
Church, where he served in many different roles over his
lifetime.
He is survived by his wife, Connie Ward; seven loving
cousins; and a host of loving friends and family. |
