William Carl Radloff -- A
successful and enterprising rancher, liberal in his support of
the movements for the progress of his adopted country and one of
those who have done much towards advancing the standard of
schools in this section of San Luis Obispo County, is William
Carl Radloff, who was born in Prussia, Germany, January 15,
1867. His father died when the son was a babe, and afterward his
mother brought him to this country and settled in Dodge county,
Wis, in 1868. There he was raised on a farm and went to the
public schools near Hartford.
Hi mother was married in Wisconsin, to Josiah Crowfoot, a native
of England, who had settled in Dodge county.........[military
service of Josiah].......
1884 Josiah Crowfoot brought his family to California, and for
one year they lived near Oakland. In 1885, they came to San Luis
Obispo County, located a homestead on Estrella plains and
improved it. He [Josiah] died in
1909, and since then his widow [William's
mother] continues to make her home on the ranch.
After the death of his step-father, Mr. Radloff operated the
farm with success, renting more land and using modern machinery,
so that he now has a Samson tractor, a combined harvester, and
thirty-two head of horses. Besides doing his own cutting, he
works in the neighborhood, cutting for others a thousand acres
during the season. In 1903 he bought half a section eight miles
from Paso Robles and has a well-equipped place, and farms
adjoining land, having about one section under cultivation to
grain.
Mr. Radloff was married in Reno, Nev., to Mrs.Carrie (Kalar)
Dake, a native of West Virginia, who was also an early settler
here. By her first marriage, Mrs. Radloff has one son Walter
Radloff. He was engaged with his father in ranching and was
educated in the grammar and high school in Paso Robles. The
family are members of the Methodist Church in Estrella, of which
Mr. Radloff is a trustee. He has served for fifteen years as
trustee of the Estrella school district and has been clerk of
the board for ten years, and in politics is a Progressive
Republican. What success has come to Mr. Radloff has been of his
own making, and has won a wide circle of friends since locating
in the county. |

Obituary for William Raymond
Kalar
Published in the Santa
Cruz Sentinel on May 17, 1961 |
Funeral services for William Raymond
Kalar will be conducted tomorrow at I p.m. in Whites chapel with
Rev. Harry Hanson officiating. Private interment will follow in
the Oakwood Memorial park.
Kalar, a native of Santa Cruz, died suddenly Monday in San Jose
as he was returning from attending a baseball game at
Candlestick Park. He had attended local schools and for several
years worked in the Ebert's department store before he became
associated with his uncle, the late Fred A. Bright in Bright's
blacksmith shop.
He married the former Dorotha Ebert, who survives him, September
17, 1927. In 1936, he bought the blacksmith shop and renamed it
the Kalar Blacksmith shop. The shop was at 325 Soquel avenue
until redevelopment of the area caused it to be moved in 1958 to
its present location at 324 River street. Kalar was an avid
sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and baseball. He
lived at 120 Darwin street.
He also is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Joyce Nichols of Santa
Cruz; a son, Darrel Kalar of Aptos; his mother, Mrs. Ruth Kalar
of Santa Cruz, and three grandchildren.
He was a member of Santa Cruz Lodge 96, IOOF, and the Elks. |

Mark Dale
Kalar
- b. Jul 29, 1947, Santa Cruz Co.,
CA; May 9, 2014
When Mark was born, mother Jean was
still married to Thomas E Glass.
In the Santa Cruz Sentinel, there is
a birth announcement of the baby boy
born July 29, 1947 to Mr and Mrs
Thomas E Glass. When you look
in the CA Birth Index, there is no
child with the last name of Glass
born on this day. However,
when you enter the last name of
Kalar, Mark Dale Kalar appears with
mother's maiden name as Haskin.
Mark also shows up in the City
Directories living at 148 Seaside
(one of the Kalar addresses).
Mark is also mentioned as Darrel's
son in his obituary. So unless
the birth index is giving the wrong
information, Darrel was Mark's
father and he had a relationship
with Jean while he was 15 years old.
Not impossible. OR
Darrel adopted Mark and the name
change is reflected in the birth
index.
As far as I could tell, Mark did not
marry. He spent some time in
jail. Found a couple of news
articles that mentioned him being
convicted and sent to jail for petty
theft. |

Obituary for Joyce K Nichols
Published in Bellingham Herald on Nov. 24, 2013 |
Joyce K. Nichols, of Bellingham, WA, peacefully passed away
Tuesday, November 19, 2013 surrounded by family.
She was 76, born to Dortha Ebert and Raymond Kalar on September
10, 1937 in Santa Cruz, California.
She graduated from Santa Cruz High School in 1955 and shortly
after met her husband to whom she married a year later. They
moved to Bellingham in 1970 with their two boys where she
started her career as a Receptionist in the chiropractic offices
of both Dr. Ferry and Dr. Feurmeister until she retired.
She was an avid bowler on many leagues for many years with great
friends. This is where she took the claim of the 10PIN.
After her retirement she and her husband traveled in their fifth
wheel to visit friends and family along the West Coast. This
gave her a chance to crochet and play cards with friends all
while enjoying the outdoors. While at home she enjoyed bowling,
baking, gardening and spending Friday nights at Deming Speedway
where she could watch the sport she loved the most!
You always knew that when you stopped by to see her at home
there was a full jar on M&M's on the piano and fresh baked
goodies, especially chocolate chip cookies.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brother, and husband,
David, of 49 years.
Survivors include sons: Mike (Lori) and Glenn (Tracy); three
granddaughters: Dana (Sean) DeVries, Kara and Kim; grandson,
Josh (Cassie); three great-granddaughters: Savannah, Jaydn; and
Brooke; as well as many nieces and nephews. Joyce was well known
by many and will be greatly missed!
The family would like to extend an invitation to join them
Saturday, November 30th for services at Greenacres at 12pm,
followed by a Celebration of Life at 2pm at the Deming Logging
Show Museum. |

- Census - Maude is still with husband Charles Ivins in San Luis

on the Family Search website. It is much clearer than the
ancestry.com copy. It looks like Schuster was written in
next to Maud's name. This is not part of Maud's name!!!!
This was some type of note the census taker wrote down
afterwards. Note the darker ink. It could be a cross
street or something. It has nothing to do with Maud's name.
