Widow Nola Mae Teets moves to Cumberland, MD soon after the death of Earl (source: 1940 Census). Probably left town soon after funeral because Earl's grave marker was provided by his sisters Dessie and Elva.

Between 1935 - 1938, Nola Mae marries Lester H Emery and remains in Maryland until the 1950 Census.  Nola Mae then ends up in Reno, NV Between 1950 - 1951.  Divorces Lester Emery in 1951, Reno, Washoe Co., NV and marries Joseph Thomas Breen in November of 1951.  Then moves to California and Washington area. The 1940 and 1950 Census showed no children with Nola Mae therefore, there is a strong probability that Earl and Nola Mae had no children. Her parents do not have any grandchildren born 1931-1935 living with them in 1940 and 1950 Census.

Of note. I am the only one, that I know of (based on what was online 7/2022), to link Earl Ray Kittle and Nola Mae Teets to Lester Emery and then to Joseph Thomas Breen.  The key to my search was the 1933 Elkins City Directory where May was listed as " N May Kittle"  The initial " N " alerted me to a possibly entire different first name other than May/Mae.  The marriage license for Earl and May, says she was born in Randolph Co., WV.  When looking for her birth record, I discovered that her birth county was actually Barbour Co., WV and her name was actually Nola Mae Teets and this gave me her parents names.  This led me quickly to the CA death record of Nola Mae Breen.  Washoe Co., NV marriage records online led me to marriage between Joseph T Breen and Mae Emery.

Harry Reese Gamber, entrepreneur
By Frederick N Rasmussen and The Baltimore Sun

Harry Reese Gamber, a high school dropout who became a successful businessman specializing in drywall and painting, died Sunday of pancreatic cancer at Gilchrist Hospice in Towson.

The Owings Mills resident, who had lived in Catonsville for many years, was 85.

The son of an auto mechanic and a homemaker, Harry Reese Gamber was born in a home in Westminster that is now Maggie's Restaurant.
His great-grandfather, William Snyder Gamber, who was a Civil War veteran, served as postmaster from 1881 to 1903 of the Carroll County village that was named for him.

In 1930, Mr. Gamber, who was known as Reese, was struck by an automobile that left him with serious nerve damage and a permanently injured right arm. Numerous hospitalizations left him behind in school, and when he was 13, he dropped out.

Unable to enlist for the service because of his arm, Mr. Gamber worked for the Red Cross during World War II.

From 1945 to 1948, he worked a variety of construction jobs, including driving a cement mixer for the Harry T. Campbell Co., and later rose to become a foreman.

"Because of his arm, he learned to shift the truck's gears by taking a hand off the wheel and using his knee," said a son, Gary R. Gamber, CEO of Carroll Real Estate Title Services Inc. and a Reisterstown resident.

After a job he was working on shut down, he went to a Violetville site where the Jerome Gebhart Co. was building homes. He was told the company wasn't looking for a foreman but needed a painter.

"When questioned about the value of a one-armed painter, he told them, 'I can paint,' and the next day showed up with another unemployed friend, Bill Stocksdale," said his son.

"So with Reese mixing and pouring the paint and Bill painting the walls, they launched Hollywood Painting & Decorating Co. in 1950," said Mr. Gamber.

Gebhart became a loyal customer of their company until its owner's death two decades later.

In 1965, Mr. Gamber merged his company with the August J. Fitch Drywall and Plastering Co. to form Wallcrafters Inc.

The first year the company was in business, said his son, it installed 25 million square feet of drywall and used more than 1 million gallons of paint, plaster, glue and joint compound. It had annual sales of more than $2 million.

A year later, the company had expanded to more than 350 employees and had "drywalled and painted practically every home and apartment constructed by Henry J. Knott, Edward Meyerberg Co., James Keelty Co., Joseph Meyerhoff Co., Morton Macks, Victor Posner, Macht Co., Leonard Stullman Co. and Mount Royal Building Co.," his son said.

Mr. Gamber developed a special paint for Mr. Knott, who complained about the cost of painting the approximately 15,000 apartment units he owned.

He mixed "excess waste oil-based colored paints with clean lacquer and created a speckled paint finish," his son said.

Realizing that middlemen in the paint industry were costing Wallcrafters more than $200,000 annually, Mr. Gamber, along with two other business associates, formed Contact Paint and Chemical Corp., which manufactured paint used by his company as well as other contractors.

In 1981, he sold Wallcrafters to his employees and then worked with his son in land development.

"He did the site planning for roads and utilities," his son said.

In addition to his own businesses, during the 1950s and 1960s, Mr. Gamber became a licensed private detective and teamed with a friend, Lew Herman, who owned Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation.

The job of Mr. Gamber, who was 6 feet 5 and weighed 300 pounds, was to kick down doors during nocturnal raids on motels and hotels. Mr. Herman then snapped pictures of couples in adulterous situations that were used in divorce proceedings.

A stock car racing fan, Mr. Gamber built his first stock car from a 1930s flathead Ford, and later owned other cars that he had drivers race at tracks primarily in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

In 1956, he was named president of Free State Stock Car Racing Association. By 1958, he had retired from the sport.

Mr. Gamber had served for many years as a director of the Home Builders Association of Maryland, the American Subcontractors Association and the Society of American Military Engineers.

He was a member of Mount Moriah Lodge 116 of the Masons and Shriners International. He had been a charter member of the old Gas Lamp Club in downtown Baltimore.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, 10911 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills.

In addition to his son, Mr. Gamber is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Helen Rosemary "Rosie" Kittle; five daughters, Deborah Ricker and Dana Fields, both of Catonsville, Dawn Ritt of Owings Mills, Deanna Urner of Homeland and Denise Lytle of Atlanta; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

About Birth Date for Nellie - This family does not have accurate records of birth dates. There was probably no family bible with the dates and it looks like Artha was not a good record keeper.

Nellie was born in Tucker Co., WV on Apr 7, 1907.  They were probably visiting family there at the time.  The delayed birth certificate was prepared in 1944. At least they got the month right on the delayed certificate.

All of Nellie's document with a birth date (excluding the Tucker Co., WV record), have the incorrect date of Apr 24, 1907

Varian balancing college studies with military service

Editor's note -- This article is part of The Inter-Mountain’s Unsung Heroes series for 2019, which features veterans in our area sharing first-hand accounts of their military service.

ELKINS — It takes a disciplined and courageous individual to not only take on a career in the military, but at the same time earn a college degree. Jessica Varian, current Davis & Elkins College student, has challenged herself to do exactly that.

Varian has served nine years in the Air National Guard. She currently is stationed at the 167th in Martinsburg, where she has obtained the rank of E6, technical sergeant
Her grandfather played a huge role in her life, inspiring her choice to join the military.

“My grandfather was in the military,” she said. “He retired E7. He has always just been a huge role model and the same for my uncles, they were enlisted as well. One is in the Army and one is in the Air Force. It has always been kind of like a plan B in essence, but once I decided to take that route it just felt right. I was 23 when I enlisted.

“I enlisted after my first failed attempt of college at Glenville,” she said. “I needed to do something different. I needed the discipline and that is another reason I joined. I needed a solid path to go on and it really helped me.

“I grew up in a very amazing family. Any dark road that I took was my own doing. I did the regular rebellious thing and made good friends but bad choices. I saw what I was doing and was like, this is not the road that I want to take. I enlisted and it was my way out, it was my safety blanket that paid for my college and let me travel.”

Varian’s travels have taken her around the world.

“I’ve done four years in Great Falls, Montana, at a base called Malmstrom,” she said. “To be honest, I thought it was a German base when I first got assigned. That is what everyone thought, too! I dare not say it was a let down, but it was close.

“Then, I went to Adana, Turkey to Incirlik Air Base for 15 months. I did almost two years in Moody Air Force Base in Valadosta, Georgia. I got a deployment from there to go to Qatar, Iraq, for a few months, then came back and finished out my six months. It was so cool.

“My favorite place would have to be Turkey because before we got put on lockdown, we could actually go off base and experience the culture,” she said. “We were able to go to different countries and experience their culture. I definitely enjoyed going overseas.”

Another part of being in the Air National Guard that she enjoys is the bonds and connections that she has been able to make.

“My favorite part is honestly the people,” she said. “Throughout the comradery is completely different than you would find in civilian lifestyle. People from my first base I have not seen since 2014 and we talk at the very minimum, once a month. All of my friends are spread out. No matter where we are, we still talk.

“That is one thing that my grandfather told me. He said, ‘When you join the military, you will find the best people in your life. No matter where you go, no matter the years between, they will always there.’ That has definitely been proven to be true.”

Balancing college classes with the military has proven to be challenging. Recently, Varian was deployed to Japan during the middle of the semester.

“Up until this current deployment to Japan, it was doable,” she said. “I was supposed to be gone for two weeks but we ended up staying for three because the plane was having mechanical issues. This is the most stress I have ever dealt with since my first base. At my first base, everything was very strict. Once I get caught up with everything, it will go back to being able to balance everything. It is not easy.

“To be an officer you have to have a bachelors degree. I am hopefully going to be swapping over to public affairs and that will give me a leg up. Military is ran though regulations so it is pretty much already cut and dried, but it will be a deeper dive into proper formats, which is what I like.”

Varian is studying English as a sophomore at D&E. Her future plans involve finishing out her English degree and then go back to active duty. She hopes to go back as an officer. She also hopes to stay in the military for as long as she can until retirement.

The majority of Varian’s family members live in the area. Her parents live in Dry Fork, one sister works at Valley Health Care, and the other sister works as a physician assistant at Davis Medical Center.

Varian currently lives in Elkins.

1940 - Census - The information was provided by wife Alene.  John D and James R are listed as sons.  However, this would be physically impossible.  All of the adults in this household are too young to have children aged 10 and 14.  They might be adopted.  I tried to find these 2 children in the records with no luck.  They may have had a different last name. Neither appear with this family in the 1950 Census.

Lewis Howard Kittle
On the grave marker and obituary for Lewis, his name is Lewis Howard Kittle, III.  I do not know where "the 3rd" came from.  Unless the family decided to skip a generation and just name this Lewis the 3rd even though it makes no sense.  Lewis 3rd's father was never designated as "Jr" until later in the obituaries. "Jr's" father was Harvey Gay Kittle. Harvey's father was Lewis C Kittle.  Was THIS the original Lewis??

If you look at all the documents above Census, Marriage Certificate, Grave Marker, Military records, etc.  No where does Lewis Howard Kittle, father of Lewis the 3rd, call himself "Junior".  He is just called himself Lewis Howard Kittle.....period.

The 3rd designation first appears in the 1950 Census for Lewis the 3rd.  The 1940 Census has "Jr" for Lewis, 3rd, which makes more sense.

Wife Kathleen is a bit of a mystery and the amount of times she actually married.  The first recorded marriage is to Alfred Peple Doyle on Nov 10, 1944 in Ceredo, Wayne Co., WV under the name Kathleen Black.  Her birth date is given as Aug 28, 1917.  However, she gives her parents names as Paul Black and Sally Black.  She is 27 years old and gives her birth location as Hamlin, WV.  This Is Kathleen Miles.  Was she married to someone named Black first or is she trying to hide her identity with fictional parent names and just using Black as a last name??  Then in Aug 2, 1945, she marries Alfred Doyle again in Gallia Co., OH under the same name Kathleen Black.  The marriage license in OH has her correct parents' names.

Then she appears in the 1950 Census living without any children with husband Rolland Duffy Fisher in Point Pleasant, Mason Co., WV.  The same place she says she is living in the Indiana Marriage License with Richard.  This marriage license says she was only married once before, divorcing in 1951.  This we know is incorrect, she had been married at least 2 times prior to her marriage to Richard.

Forward to her SS Application and Claims Index.  In Mar 1939 she is using last name Black, Apr 1959 last name Kittle.  No dates but a reference to using name Kathleen Miles Fisher

Now the mystery about the children.  Patricia was born in 1947.  However in the 1950 Census, Richard is living with his brother Russell with no children and it says that he had never married. Patricia was probably the daughter of Kathleen from one of her prior husbands and she was living somewhere else during the 1950 Census.  Not with Kathleen's parents. I tried looking at all of the Patricia's born in WV in 1947 in the 1950 Census, with no luck. Or was Patricia adopted?
