1910 - Ella is born ca. Apr 1910 based on the 1910 Census taken on May 10, 1910, which reports her age as 1/12.

After her marriage to Walter Miller, she gains 6 years for some reason. Both the 1940 and 1950 Census have her born in Pennsylvania in either 1904 or 1905.

My first thought was that this Ella, married to Walter Miller, had to be a different Ella. Then I looked at her death certificate. Her birth year is given as 1904. Now the birth location is correct and is given as Randolph Co., WV and her father's name is given as Harman Isner. This confirmed to me that Ella Isner who married Boyd Mensch was also the wife of Walter Gordon.

Ella's two children with Boyd Mensch are with their father in the 1940 Census. Based on the birth date of son Jack Miller of Nov 15, 1931, Ella must have left Boyd Mensch soon after the birth of her son Walter Mensch

Herman R. Burns, Sr., 82, of Thomas, WV, died on Monday, January 11, 2021, at his home. Born on January 12, 1938, in Douglas, WV, he was the son of the late Ira Glenn and Dora Elizabeth (Losh) Burns.

He worked at Sunrise Sanitation for 25 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved to explore and tinker with everything. Horseshoes was one of his favorite pastimes and he never met a stranger. Lately he enjoyed watching westerns.

He leaves behind his wife, Rhoda Burns; children, Herman Ray Burns, Jr. and wife Cindy of Thomas, Loye Ira Burns and wife Bobbie of Thomas, Rebecca Burns Sharp of Parsons, Brittany Burns Carr and husband Tyler of Oakland, Bryan Burns of Oakland, and Brandon Burns and wife Grace of Oakland;

thirteen grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; two sisters, Rebecca Lynn Burns Lipscomb and husband Gary of Parsons and Zetta Jean Sweitzer of Oakland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorthy Virginia Burns; a brother, Loye Ira Burns; and a sister Regina Louise Fresh.

Friends will be received at the Hinkle-Fenner Funeral Home, 567 Thomas Ave, Davis, on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM and on Thursday, January 14, 2021, from 10 to 11 AM after which time a funeral service will be held with Fr. Timothy Grassi officiating

Mary Elizabeth See, 72, of Westernport and formerly of Piedmont, WV and Jacksonville, FL, passed away on Friday, December 4, 2020, at UPMC Western Maryland Hospital.

Mary was born on September 1, 1948, in Parsons, WV and was the daughter of the late Chelsie J. Varner and Dortha (Mensch) Burns.

She worked various jobs over the years, but her love for creating crafts, jewelry and skin care products was her passion. Mary had attended the First Baptist of Jacksonville, FL.

She is survived by two sons, Mike Ritter and wife Misty Allender, and Bobby Hall; two step-sons, Kenny See, Jr. and David Holmes; three brothers, Junior Varner, Richard Varner, and Charlie Varner; two half brothers, Ira Burns and Herman Burns; a half sister, Rebeca Burns; four grandchildren, Kayla Hall Clemons, Charity Hall Lear, Laylah Ritter and Austin Ritter; two great grandchildren, Liam Lear and Blake Lear; and a step father, Hank Burns.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Austin See, to whom she was married on July 7, 1980 in Keyser. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to her family to help with expenses.

Someone on Find A Grave has placed Virginia in the Roy Cemetery along with sister Dorie Sue Varner.

Where they got this information is unknown. There is no grave marker photo. Since there is no death certificate for Virginia, there is no documentation (like sister Dorie) of where the burial took place. Maybe the Find A Grave volunteer who entered the record has cemetery records?? OR just assumed Virginia would be buried in the same cemetery as Dorie?

Chelsie Richard Varner, 63, of Bunker Hill, West Virginia, died Friday, January 1, 2021 in the Berkeley Medical Center, Martinsburg, West Virginia.

Mr. Varner was born May 2, 1957 in Lorain County, Ohio, son of the late Chelsie Junior Varner and Dortha V. Mensch Burns.

He worked for a circus in the late 70�s to early 80�s called King Brothers Circus which became Clyde Betty Cole Brother Circus out of DeLand, Florida. The rest of his work history included driving over the road throughout the US with Simbeck, but his passion was driving dump trucks to be an asset to the construction industry. The companies he worked for include CS Jennings Construction, DeHaven Trucking, Triple T Trucking, Pine Knoll Construction, Stuart M Perry, and Triple Crown Trucking.

He had a love for southern gospel music that led him to volunteer with WTRM Radio and he drove the bus for the Bates Family, Promised Land Quartet, and the Skyline Boys Quartet.

He married Roberta Jones Varner on August 27, 1994 at Peoples Country Church with Pastor JP Roby officiating in Frederick County, Virginia.

Surviving with his wife is a son, Courtney Lambert Varner (Jessica) of Hement, CA; a grandson, granddaughter, and step-granddaughter; three brothers, Junior Franklin Varner of Jacksonville, FL, Loye �Ira� Burns (Bobbie) and Herman Burns (Cindy) all of Thomas, WV; sister, Becky �Sissy� Sharp of Parsons, WV; his step-father, Hank Burns (Rhoda) of Thomas, WV; his brother-in-law who was also his caregiver at home, James Jones of Bunker Hill, WV; several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews; and Brittany Burns Carr (Tyler), Brian Burns and Brandon Burns all of Oakland, MD who he thought of as siblings.

His sister Mary Varner See, and a sister-in-law Betty Varner preceded him in death.

A celebration of life service will be held 4:00 P. M. Sunday, January 10, 2021 at the church they attended, New Covenant Christian Church, 165 Miracle Way, Winchester, VA 22603 with Pastor Steven Wymer officiating. Burial will be private at a later date.

Madison Brianne Varner, 3 months, died Friday, June 6, 2008, at her home.

Born Feb. 27, 2008, in Batesville, she was the daughter of Herman Thomas and Christy Ann (Cook) Varner.

Survivors include her parents of Shelbyville; sister, Victoria Sueann Varner of Shelbyville; brother, Christopher Kyle Varner of Shelbyville; and grandparents, Carolyn Cook of Shelbyville and Irene Maxfield of Greensburg.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Murphy-Parks Funeral Service, 703 S. Harrison St.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mark Vise officiating.

Burial will be in Flat Rock Cemetery in Flat Rock.

1940 - Birth location given in Betty's obituary is Clay Co., WV. There is no record, I can find, to indicate this family was ever in Clay Co., WV. On the 1940 Census taken on May 10, 1940, the Miller family was living in Hamilton, Nicholas Co., WV. Mother Ella provided the information on this Census. In five days she gave birth to Betty. So it is unlikely, although not impossible, that she was doing a whole lot of moving around in her condition. Clay County however, is next to Nicholas County. Soooo.......it is possible they might have been visiting in Clay Co.

Birth Records for both Clay and Nicholas counties are not available on the WV Archives & History Site and probably will not be accessible online for another 20 years.

Betty Mae Tomlinson Mays, age 79, of Toledo, transitioned from this life to our Heavenly Father on August 2, 2019, at the Cleveland Clinic.

Betty was born May 15, 1940, in Clay County West Virginia to Walter Gordon Miller and Ella Miller. She was one of 3 sisters and had 7 brothers to call family. In the late 1960s, she met the love of her life Mr. Arthur MacLaine Mays. They had one daughter, Shanda, and they took a number of car vacations visiting 28 different states in little less than 10 years.

Betty, along with her husband she affectionately called Mays, believed in the power of education and when she was not working as a home health aide, she volunteered and supported her daughter in school.

Betty raised money for school activities including the Maumee High School Marching Band and managed the football concession stand with other caring band parents to ensure that uniforms and trips were paid for. In her retirement years, Betty was known to enjoy playing games with the other residents of Lutheran Woods Senior living community, spoiling her cat Raven, and was quick with a joke and a great sense of humor.

Betty leaves behind a host of family members who love her deeply. She was a devoted mother to Dr. Shanda �Shy� Gore, mother-in-law to Bobby Lee Gore, Jr., and a wonderful grandmother to her two grandchildren, Nathan and Shoshanah Gore. She will be missed by her loving brother Roger (Patty) Miller, sister Carolyn Roby (Richard), brother John (Gertrude) Miller, brother Kenneth Miller, brother Clifford Miller, and nieces Karen (Mike) Feather, niece Robyn (Bob) Griggs, and Toni Lynch.

She is preceded in passing by husband Arthur Mays, sister Nina (Richard) Strawderman and brothers Jack, Glenn, and David Miller.

A private memorial service will take place on the family�s Miller mountain in West Virginia. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family suggests contributions be made to the Toledo Lucas County Library Foundation Arthur M. Mays Room in Betty�s memory.

John Miller, 79, of Albright, died Saturday, March 26, 2022, at WV Caring Center in Elkins West Virginia.

He was born October 2, 1942, in Copley, a son of the late Walter and Ella Isner Miller.

John was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. John was a carpenter in construction for many years.

He is survived by his wife Kandace Miller, Two sons; Davie Miller and Karen of Kingwood, and Johnny Miller one daughter; Tina Miller Adams of Michigan, brothers; Clifford Miller of Elkton, MD., Kenny Miller. one sister; Carolyn Roby of Secretary, MD. nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Kathy Miller in 2017; his one son, Walter Eric Miller and brothers, Roger, Glenn, Jim, Jack and David; two sisters, Nina and Betty.

Mrs. Arbogast died Saturday Evening in Licking Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 19, 1912, in Elkins, W. Va., to the late Harmon and Vinnie (Phillips) Isner. She was a retired cook for the Taft Hotel and the Arlington Nursing Home.

She is survived by: three daughters, Mrs. Duane (Jean) Martin of Fallsburg, Ohio, Mrs. Ruie (Janice) Stuart of Heath and Mrs. Joseph (Nancy) Bowlby of St. Louisville; two sisters, Mrs. Dessie Glenn and Mrs. Tacie Naylor, both of Newark; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband. Waldo C. Sturm; her mother; three stepsons: Waldo R. Sturm and Ronald E. Sturm, both of Newark, and Randell C. Sturm of the home; two stepdaughters: Mrs. Robert (Shirley) Power of South Carolina, and Mrs. Lowell (Nancy) Bowers of Newark; one brother, Leroy Arbogast of Granville; three sisters: Mrs. Dwayne (Caroline) Martin. Mrs. Janice Stuart and Mrs. Russell (Nancy) Bowby, all of Newark; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. One brother is deceased.

Leroy Arbogast -- Services for Leroy Arbogast, 45, of 4642 Wesleyan Church Road, Granville, will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Henderson, Van Atta and Johnston Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Knox officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Arbogast died Tuesday morning at home. He was born June 3, 1940, in Elkin, W.Va., to Grace Arbogast of Newark, and the late Russell Arbogast.

NEWARK: A funeral service celebrating the life of Carolyn J. "Jeanie" Wilson, age 73, of Newark, Ohio, will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 30, at The Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service. Burial will follow at Wilson Cemetery.

Jeanie passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at Selma Markowitz Care Center (operated by Hospice of Central Ohio).

She was born June 25, 1942 in Elkins, West Virginia to the late Russell I. and Gracie (Isner) Arbogast.

Jeanie retired from Owens Corning Repack Department after twenty-three years of service.

She enjoyed having family and friends come to her home visiting in the kitchen with coffee and was always cooking them something. She also enjoyed going on trips to the casino.

She is survived by her loving husband Kenny Wilson whom she married December 31, 1998; four daughters, Phyllis (Timothy) Osborn, Melinda Sturm, Cynthia Anderson and Clara (John) Corbett; five step-children, Scott Wilson, Debra (Brian) Broseus, Kristina Wilson, Terra (Brian) Erlenbach and Steve (Traci) Wilson; sisters, Janice Stuart and Nancy Bowlby; twenty-nine grandchildren and thirty-nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Leroy Arbogast, sister, Juanita Sturm; and a great-grandson, Taylor Mason Cunningham

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29th, at The Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service, 59 North Fifth Street, Newark.

ST. LOUISVILLE: A memorial service celebrating the life of Nancy L. Bowlby, age 69, of St. Louisville, will be held on Friday, September 30, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Newark Church of the Nazarene, 200 S. Williams Street, Newark. Private burial services will be held at Highland Cemetery.

Nancy was born in Elkins, WV on July 2, 1947 to the late Russell and Gracie (Isner) Arbogast. She passed away on September 25, 2016 at OSU Medical Center in Columbus.

Nancy was a devoted homemaker. She enjoyed flower gardening, spending time outdoors and especially spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Russell L. Bowlby, Douglas (Patricia) Bowlby, James "Rodney" (Sandy) Bowlby and Kimberly Bowlby; grandchildren, Deanna, Brittany, Joe, Kaine, Heather, Autumn, Shyanna, Tarra, Kaiden, Micha and Dakota; 10 great grandchildren; and sister, Janice (Ruie) Stuart.

Clara Helmick, 47, of Glenford Route 1, died at 5:35 pm Tuesday in Good Samaritan Medical Center after a lingering illness.

Mrs Helmick was born Feb 20, 1924 in Elkins WV a daughter of Harman and Vennie Phillips Isner and had been a photo-lab technician with the Women�s Army Corps. (WWII)

She was a member of the St Paul Lutheran Church inGlenford, the Church Women�s Club and the American Legion at Newark where she was a former employee of the Owens-Corning Glass Company.

Surviving are her husband Leonard; a daughter, Mrs. Richard Amore of the home and four sisters; Mrs Dessie Glenn of Glenford, Mrs Gracie Arbogast, Mrs Nellie Murphy and Mrs Tacie Naylor all of Newark.

The body was taken to the Criss Brothers Funeral Home at Newark where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm today.

At noon Friday the body will be taken to the St Paul Lutheran Church in Glenford where services will be held at 2 pm.

Rev Richard W Findlay will officiate and burial will be in Highland Cemetery at Glenford.

NEWARK - Born 2/16/1950, graduated from Heath high school in 1968, and married her beloved husband Richard Paul Amore the same year. As a nurse, her primary identity, she tirelessly earned a Bachelor's degree from Ohio University, a Master's from Wright State University�and yet still successfully managed a loving family and many, many friends.

Carol helped save and give peace to thousands of lives as a paramedic and firefighter at Newark Township, during her service as a Licking County coroner, as a medical instructor at COTC, and as a nurse practitioner, her true life's calling. From Newark area nursing homes, to Licking County Memorial's ER and community outreach programs, to women's health clinics, and in every major central Ohio hospital system (Grant, Riverside, Mount Carmel, and Ohio State), Carol always sought to preserve and cherish life.

And as much as she was dedicated to her life's work, she still found time to bring that same passion to her many now grieving family and friends, while maintaining a strong presence on several local quilting guilds and always being an unwavering Buckeyes fan. Carol had an amazing love of people, and who was the kind of woman who you could call "best friend" and still expect to interrupt you when she saw a stranger on the side of the road that needed help.

Carol was proceeded in death by her parents Leonard and Clara Helmick. She is survived by her husband Richard Amore, sons Paul and Michael Amore, and granddaughters Sydney and Addyson Amore, numerous other family and friends and, maybe more importantly, thousands of strangers who she helped give more time on this Earth.

Calling hours Tuesday April 6th from 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm, funeral at 10am Wednesday April 7th at Brucker & Kishler Funeral Home, 985 N. 21st in Newark, Ohio.

As a member of Toastmasters International, Richard Amore enjoys teaching others the art of public speaking, telling stories, and performing stand-up comedy. He often uses his real-life experiences to entertain audiences, especially the story of how he met his wife. Richard was working at Owens Corning when a coworker told him she had a friend that might enjoy going out on a double date. However, the friend declined the double date because she had never met Richard before and did not know him. Determined to prove himself a worthy date, Richard went to the young lady�s house and knocked on the door.

�I drove up and down State Route 79 a few times to build-up the courage to approach the door. I introduced myself, and Carol let me into the house,� Richard shared. �After spending an hour talking to her and her mother, I said, �now that you know me � how about that date?��

The two married a short time later and spent 53 years together. Richard began working for Carol�s father, and later purchased Helmick�s Exterminating from the Helmick family. Carol became a nurse and was employed at Licking Memorial Hospital (LMH) for a number of years. After earning her master�s degree and becoming a Nurse Practitioner, she received a position at a Columbus Cancer Hospital.

In 2021, Carol passed away due to complications from triple bypass surgery. Three weeks later, Richard began experiencing his own medical issues. As he stood to walk his dog, he became lightheaded, vomited, then passed out. When he regained consciousness, Richard dialed 911. Emergency Medical Technicians performed a quick exam, but could not determine what may have caused Richard�s sudden illness. They transported him to the Licking Memorial Emergency Department (ED). Upon arrival at the ED, nursing staff implemented protocols to determine if Richard was experiencing a heart attack and performed an electrocardiogram (EKG). The ED physician, Terrill D. Burnworth, D.O., reviewed the EKG, ordered blood tests, and consulted Cardiologist Hassan Rajjoub, M.D. At first, the testing was inconclusive as to whether Richard had experienced a heart attack or an aneurysm.

�As I was waiting for more test results, the monitors detected a cardiac event. I felt no pain in my chest, just some numbness in my jaw, but the staff issued an emergency code for a STEMI,� said Richard. An ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) describes a heart attack in which the artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body is blocked. �I was so thankful that Dr. Rajjoub was there with me. He saved my life that day. I had no idea how dangerous a STEMI can be. It is often called a widow-maker.�

Richard was quickly moved to the catheretization laboratory where staff members prepared him for an angioplasty � a procedure used to open blocked coronary arteries. A long, thin catheter is inserted into a blood vessel in the arm or groin, then guided to the blocked coronary artery. The catheter contains a tiny balloon that is inflated at the narrowed area of the heart artery, and a stent � an expandable metal mesh coil, is placed in the opening. Dr. Rajjoub discovered several blockages and informed Richard that he would also have to bypass surgery once he was stabilized.

�I told my son, �I have heard great things about Dr. Rajjoub and his expertise in heart care. I trust him to make good decisions about the next steps in my recovery,�� Richard said. He was told that he would be staying at LMH for three days for monitoring. However, there were concerns about Richard�s blood pressure, and Dr. Rajjoub suggested immediate action be taken. Richard was transported to a Columbus hospital for bypass surgery.

After the surgery and initial recovery, Richard returned home. It was suggested that he undergo cardiac rehabilitation; however, Richard was suffering from spinal stenosis � a narrowing of the spaces within the spine, which can put pressure on the nerves that travel through the spine. Richard had postponed a scheduled surgery for the condition because of his wife�s bypass surgery, and was now waiting to fully recover from his own heart procedures.

Not long after his return home, Richard once again visited the ED. When he realized he had accidentally sat down on his cat, Richard moved too quickly and fell out of the chair. He could not stand to get off the floor, so he called 911. A computerized tomography (CT) scan revealed he had broken the third bone down in the lumber region of his back. Richard underwent surgery on the broken bone and had the spinal stenosis repaired. With care for his back issues, Richard is now able to participate in cardiac rehabilitation and is working to increase his strength.

In April, Richard made a stage appearance in the Active�Senior Game Show hosted by Licking Memorial Health Systems, winning several prizes. �It took a lot of will power to climb the stairs to the stage, but I was excited to be part of the show. I never turn down an opportunity to be in front of an audience,� Richard shared.

Richard has faced several other challenges since his back surgery, including a second heart attack, and issues with his medication; however, he continues to work to stay active and maintain his wellbeing and weight. After graduating high school, Richard weighed over 420 pounds. He was proud when he lost 240 pounds, and determined to remain active. He volunteered for ski patrol and as a paramedic for many years. Still active with his business, Richard is happy to work with his son, Mike, who serves as a service manager for Helmick�s Exterminating. Richard also enjoys spending time with his granddaughters, Sydney and Addyson, and his son, Paul.

1947 - Died from multiple gunshot wounds to head on Jan 25, 1947, Montrose, Randolph Co., WV while visiting friends in Montrose. Also died: Walter James McCray (the shooter, committed suicide after) , husband and wife Dora Hammons McManigle, and Joseph Wilson McManigle.

The news account in The Cumberland News, Cumberland, MD, Mon, Jan 27, 1947, pg 10 said that Walter McCray shot his wife (referring to Anzina) however, there is no marriage record and both of their death certificates say both were single.

Evidently he was very drunk, was being kicked out of his rental by his landlord, the McManigle's. McCray then came back later and shot up the McManigle house, killing three then taking his own life.

TACIE NAYLOR -- Aug. 19, 1930 - Jan. 24, 2009

A funeral service for Tacie Naylor, 78, of Newark, will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brucker & Kishler Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Pierce officiating. Burial will be conducted at a later date at Isner Cemetery in Elkins. W.Va.

Mrs. Naylor passed away Saturday at Arlington Care Center after a long illness with Alzheimer's.

She was born Aug. 19, 1930, in Elkins, to the late Harman and Vinnie Olive (Phillips) Isner. Mrs. Naylor was employed at Carl's Meat Market, Bazley Meat Market, Gardners Market, Case Cardinal and Jamboree Foods. She loved baseball, embroidery and crocheting. She was a great cook and a mother sent from God.

She is survived by her three sons; Charles Leroy (Cathy) Naylor, of Newark, David (Mary Lynn) Naylor, of Newark, and Brian (Sharon) Naylor, of St. Louisville; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Joseph L. Naylor, who passed away Aug. 19.

Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st St., Newark. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Hospice of Central Ohio, P.O. Box 430, Newark, OH 43055.
