About John's birth date
On the 1900 US Census, the month and year given are May
1875. On the WWI Registration, he gives the birth date of May 6,
1875. These two documents are the only times
where his birth date is given, until the death certificate.
Then the date of Jun 22, 1875 is used on the death
certificate Most funeral homes copy the information
from the death certificate, so the burial record has John's
birth date as Jun 22, 1875.
I think the May date is the correct date because John
himself was providing the information, not a next of kin |

1930 - Census - Unable to locate John
or Luvernia in this Census. Looks like no one else has either.
I tried searching only by Luvernia's first name, since it is not common
like john. Tried Luv*, Lav*, Lov*. Tried looking at all of
the Isners with their birth dates. Even looked under the last name
Jones. Depending on the handwriting, Isner can look like Jones.
They were missed in this Census or the names were so mangled in the
indexing that no one can find them |

1934 - 1942 - Sometime after the
death of John, widow Luvernia moved to Parkersburg, Wood Co., WV, most
likely to be near daughters Barbara and Cordelia who had married a set
of Beaver brothers.
At some point, Luvernia married Henry J Nicholas and appears in the1938
City Directory and the 1940 Census with him in Parkersburg. I was unable
to find a record of this marriage in WV.
By the 1942 Parkersburg City Directory, Luvernia is living with daughter
Cordelia "Delia" as Mrs Luvernia Nicholas. It is assumed that
Luvernia is now separated from Henry J Nicholas because he lives at a
different address. |
| |
Regarding Luvernia's father.
Some family trees list a George Washington Hartsaw as her father. |

About name
When I started looking for Chloe in the historical record, I
hit a dead end after the 1920 Census.
Then I came across a family tree that had Chloe's first name
as Margie. This family tree provided a death date in
1944, WV. After looking up the death certificate, it
confirms that Margie Bell who died in Tucker Co., WV is
Chloe Fansler. Father's name given was Boyd Fansler and
mother is Sadie Isner.
There is also her marriage license, which is under the name
Margie Fansler.
So it appears that before Chloe married Ray, she was using
the name Margie, which could be her middle name. What
is interesting is that her brother Murlo's obit in 2007,
gives her name as Chloe Bell. Daughter Alberta gives
her parents' names on her 1959 marriage license as Ray Bell
and Cloe Fansler (see below) |

Note: Margie added 5 years on her age on the
certificate. She was not 22, she was 17. Ray
on the other hand, said he was 30, he was actually
36.

Obituary for
Murlo D. "Lucky" Fansler
https://www.genlookups.com/wv/webbbs_config.pl/noframes/read/1177
Accessed September 2, 2022 |
Murlo D. "Lucky" Fansler, 86, of
Parkersburg passed away after an extended illness at his
home on May 22, 2007.
He was born Aug. 3, 1920, in Parkersburg, the son of William
Boyd Fansler and Sarah Isner. Murlo, "Lucky" as he's better
known, attended schools in Wood and Tucker counties. He was
a member of Stout Memorial United Methodist Church. He
retired in 1985 from Allegheny Power after 40 years of
service. He owned and operated "Lucky?s Archery Supplies" on
Cypress Street from 1958 to 1975 when he sold it to J.B.
Sports. Prior to selling the shop, Lucky also used it to
host local musicians to play some of his favorite country
and bluegrass music.
Lucky was a member of "America's Greatest Generation," where
he proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1939 to 1945. He
served in Company G, 35th Infantry during World War II. At
the time of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he was stationed at
Schofield Base. He then served in the Central Pacific,
Guadalcanal, North Solomon Islands and Luzon. During his
tenure in the infantry as a special platoon sergeant, he was
awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Oak Leaf Cluster to the
Purple Heart in 1945. From his service in World War II,
Lucky received the following medals: Good Conduct Medal,
American Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star,
Pearl Harbor Commemorative Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service
Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Expert Rifle, Philippine
Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star and Expert Bayonet.
Prior to his illness, Lucky was an avid fan of W.Va.
football, with season tickets and regular attendance at bowl
games. Lucky was also a sportsman who enjoyed bass fishing,
bow hunting and golfing. He was a former member of Mountain
State Sportsmen. As a golfer, he played on the Allegheny
Power company league. He was appointed by Gov. Wallace
Barron to chair the West Virginia Centennial Archery
Committee. He was a staunch supporter of National Rifle
Association and the Second Amendment. He was a national
instructor of archery, teaching many young Boy Scouts the
art of archery, especially those of Troop 12 of Stout
Memorial United Methodist Church. He loved helping young
boys to succeed and making a difference in their lives.
Lucky was also a Kentucky Colonel, member of the WVU
Athletic Association, a supporter of W.Va. Law Enforcement
agencies, the Honorable Order of Purple Heart, American
Legion Post 15, VFW Post 1212 and a life member of
Parkersburg Odd Fellows Lodge No. 7, Paran Encampment No. 3,
Canton Parkersburg No. 6 (now Canton Francis I.O.O.F. No.
18).
Lucky was a past noble grand of Sharon Lodge No. 28 and
Parkersburg Lodge No. 7, past chief patriarch and past grand
patriarch of W.Va. and past Department Commander Patriarchs
Militant of W.Va. In 1974, he was elected and served as
General Commanding of the Patriarchs Militant, the highest
office to be attained in this unit of the order. Through his
service in this unit of Oddfellowship, he was awarded the
Grand Decoration of Chivalry, the highest decoration awarded
to a member of the Patriarchs Militant. He was also awarded
the Meritorious Service Award, the highest decoration
bestowed upon an Odd Fellow, for saving the life of a member
and other meritorious service in the order. He was the
chaplain of Blennerhassett Lodge 79 Fraternal Order of
Police Associate.
Surviving is his wife of nearly 61 years, Cleone Mathess
Fansler; a daughter, Mary Renee White and her husband, John
B. White, and his pride and joy, a granddaughter, Khatelin
White of Scottsville, Ky.; a sister, Frances Williams of St.
Petersburg, Fla.; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.
In addition to his parents and stepmother, Susan Mitchell
Fansler, he was preceded in death by his sister, Chloe Bell;
and his brothers, Stanley, Denzil and William Boyd Jr.
Funeral service with full military honors conducted by the
American Legion will be 1 p.m. Friday at Kimes Funeral Home
with the Rev. Scott Sears officiating. Interment will follow
at Parkersburg Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 2-8
today and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
The family requests that donations in Lucky's honor be made

Obituary for
Barbara Ann Gray
https://ducro.com/tribute/details/6293/Barbara-Gray/obituary.html
Accessed September 3, 2022 |
Barbara Ann Gray, 55, of McNutt
Avenue passed away unexpectedly Thursday, January 3, 2013 at
the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
She was born February 12, 1957 in Parkersburg, WV, the
daughter of Denzil and Julia (Mullens) Fansler and had been
an Ashtabula resident since 1999.
The daughter of a Southern Baptist preacher, she worked as a
nurses aide and a housekeeper to take care of her family. If
it could be made with yarn, Barbara crocheted it!!!! She
made everything from clothes to potholders. Her grandkids
were her life. She loved taking them to the zoo, the Deer
Park petting zoo, the PV spillway, to feed the ducks at Lake
Shore Park. She was also their biggest fan at all their
sporting events. She truly enjoyed being with her family and
reminiscing and also was a big fan of Judge Judy, Elvis
Presley, Loretta Lynn, and country and old gospel music.
Her survivors include three children, Rebecca (William)
Newman of West Springfield, PA, and Denzil Gray and Orlo Jay
(fiance Katty Hood) Newlin, both of Ashtabula; ten
grandchildren, William (fiance Kyra Lambert) Newman III,
Jeremy Newman, and Austin Ray Newman, Kaitlin Renee Newlin,
Kaylee Nicole Hood, Darryl C. Hood, Johnathan Luke, and
Diamond Renee Perez, Jade Inez Perez, and Adam Wyatt Perez;
one sister, Linda (William) Davis of Cleveland; three
brothers, David Fansler of St. Petersburg, FL, Steve Fansler
of Parma, and Chuck Fansler of Greensboro, PA; her best
friend, Brenda Williams; four god-sons, Mikey, B.A., J.T.,
and Douglas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Stephanie Newman
and Frances Gray; three grandchildren, Jessica Louise
Newman, Charlie Morgan Newman, Jr.; and Matthew Ryan Newman;
and her parents.

News Story About Conviction
of Charles Morgan Newman
https://www.news-herald.com/2002/01/05/rescuing-hydrants/
Accessed September 3, 2022
By Mark Owens
Published: January 5, 2002 at 9:25 a.m. | Updated: July 16,
2021 at 5:14 a.m. |
One by one, Ashtabula County
Prosecutor Thomas Sartini held up four photos for a judge
and a convicted murderer to see.
“We sometimes lose sight of what this case is about,”
Sartini said Friday, slowly placing one picture on a table
and reaching for another in Ashtabula County Common Pleas
Court.
“We’ve called them by name, or called them victims. But they
are four human beings left to die in a burning house.”
For the first time, Charles Newman Sr. saw the results of
the Nov. 3 fire that killed four people – his two children,
his wife, and his sister-in-law.
One by one, the photos of 4-year-old Charles Newman Jr.,
2-year-old Matthew Newman; their mother, 22-year-old
Stephanie Newman; and her sister, 16-year-old Frances Gray,
landed on a railing near Common Pleas Judge Gary Yost.
They were autopsy photos, grisly images that revealed the
ravages of a hot, smoky fire Newman started with gasoline
and a small flame.
Newman had no reaction.
Minutes later, Yost sentenced Newman to four consecutive
life terms in prison.
On Oct. 4, Newman pleaded guilty to four counts of
aggravated murder and four counts of aggravated arson. The
negotiated plea saved Newman’s life.
Initially the 22-year-old was indicted on five counts of
aggravated arson and 14 counts of aggravated murder – each
aggravated murder charge carrying a death penalty
specification.
In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to drop
11 counts and the death penalty specifications.
Yost sentenced Newman to four consecutive life terms for the
aggravated murder charges.
Each sentence allows Newman to petition for parole after 20
years. But he will not be eligible for parole for 80 years
because of the consecutive nature of the charges.
Newman also was sentenced to 10 years on each count of
aggravated arson. However, those sentences will run
concurrently with the aggravated murder charges.
The fire broke out at 939 W. 43rd St., Ashtabula, a home
that the Newmans had rented just a few weeks prior.
When city firefighters arrived, neighbors were trying to
enter the home to rescue the women and children. Newman sat
on a tree lawn, watching the house impassively, according to
court testimony.
Yost’s courtroom was packed Friday, with family members,
firefighters, police officers and members of the media.
As Newman had done in previous court appearances, he showed
little reaction to the events around him.
His attorney, David Doughten, said his client set the fire
but never had any intention of killing anyone.
Sartini, however, said evidence gathered at the scene and
from witnesses indicated Newman had every intention of
killing his family.
“There’s no question he set the fire on the first floor.
There’s no question he ran upstairs after setting the
gasoline on fire, jumped over his sleeping wife and out of a
window,” the prosecutor said.
“At the minimum, this shows a depraved indifference to human
life. He didn’t care if his family lived or died after the
fire was set.”
As Sartini showed Judge Yost the photos of Stephanie Newman,
Matthew, Charles Jr. and Frances Gray, Rebecca Newman –
Charles Sr.’s sister-in-law – ran from the room sobbing.
Rebecca was later taken to Ashtabula County Medical Center
by ambulance after collapsing in the hallway outside Yost’s
courtroom.
Barbara Gray, Stephanie Newman’s mother, said she didn’t
hate Charles Newman, but also couldn’t understand what he
did.
“I’ll take what I can get,” she said in reference to
Newman’s sentence. “No matter what happens to (Newman),
nothing will bring my babies back.”
Stephanie Newman, her two children and Frances Gray were
remembered by family members as exceptional people just
beginning or in the prime of their lives.
“Frances was a very bright, wonderful girl, tender-hearted
and spiritually beautiful,” said close family friend Brenda
Furman, who stood by Barbara Gray’s side Friday at the
sentencing. “Stephanie had a great zest for life and was
such a hard-working, caring mother.
“And the boys, Matthew and Charlie – I know God has special
wings for them. They were such a blessing in our lives.
We’re also so thankful for a community that hardly knew us
that reached out its arms when we needed them; the work of
the fire department, police department and prosecutor’s
office; and the people on West 43rd Street, people we didn’t
even know who risked their lives trying to help when a
father wouldn’t do anything. |

Sue and second husband William were the founders of the
United Pentecostal Church in Leesburg, VA, now pastored by
Rev. Raymond Windsor. Her passion and commitment in the
field of ministry have impacted countless lives. The church
remains a pivotal part of the community to this day because
of her.
She has also been a key figure as an advocate against
unregulated chemicals, the study of the effects they have on
humans, and has championed regulation and accountability for
corporations that have dispersed these chemicals illegally
and unethically. Her fight along with others has changed the
course of how corporations around the world operate for a
better quality of life for humans, animals, and the
environment.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Larry
Wallbrown, father Acie Beaver, mother Pearl Beaver, and
second husband Rev. William Bailey Jr.
Sue loved traveling with her husband Jim across the country,
spending time with family and friends, and will be missed
greatly.
Sue is survived by her husband James Post of Waldorf, MD;
her brother, Terry Beaver of Lenoir City, TN; her son, Rev.
Larry Wallbrown, II and wife Teresa of Wellsburg, WV; her
daughter, Missy Windsor and husband Rev. Raymond Windsor of
Charles Town, WV; her son Rev. William Bailey III and wife
Melinda of Bluemont, VA; seven grandchildren, Sarah Drylie
and husband Zachary, Katie Wallbrown, Bailey Windsor and
wife Alex, Thomas Wallbrown, Haleigh Windsor, Ethan Bailey,

Flowers will be accepted and may be sent to Stover Funeral
Home.

Obituary for
Harold L Canfield

Accessed August 22, 2022 |
 |
Harold L. Canfield,
affectionately known as "Jeff" by many, died June 27, 2013.
Harold enlisted in the army at an early age, and served in
the 21st infantry, 24th division. He found himself
throughout the Philippines, and Japan during his tour of
duty. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he continued to
serve as a reservist, while becoming a skilled lead burner
in the industry. His quest to serve his country led him to
re-enlist in the Air Force. Due to his exceptional
abilities, he found a home with the 1369th photo squadron.
This tour found him covering much of the world in the many
aspects of his duties. It was during these travels that he
met his wife in London, England. They were married in
England in 1954 and traveled in his duties until his
retirement at Vandenberg Air Force Base in 1974. |
Harold was preceded in death by his parents Lee and Cordelia;
stepfather, Sherman; aunt Marie Fauss; and grandmother
Lavernia Isner.
Harold is survived by his loving wife
Margaret of 59 years, his son Howard and grandsons James and
Samuel along with both of their families.
Our heartfelt thanks reach out to his close friends, Dr.
Brian Taber, the staff at the Lompoc Hospital and those at
the Lompoc CCC for their care and compassion during this
trying time.
Per "Jeff's" wishes, there will be no formal service.

Obituary for
Margaret Canfield
https://www.solosyfuneralhome.com/obituary/margaret-canfield
Accessed August 22, 2022 |
Margaret Canfield was born in
London, England. She was fortunate enough to live through
the World War II era alongside her parents, Margret and
Joseph Myers. After schooling, she apprenticed at a
clothier, becoming one of the few to assist in creating
fashions and clothing for the Queen Mother and the Royal
family. It was during that time she met her 'love', Harold
"Jeff" Canfield. They were married in London. They moved to
the states soon after, as Jeff was a member of the United
States Air Force. They traveled as one through the many
parts of the world Jeff was stationed at, finally settling
in a small community in California.
Together, they proudly raised their only son, Howard Joseph.
Shortly after her husbands passing, a visit to her son, in
Michigan, was extended due to health concerns and the
Covid-19 pandemic. She was cared for and surrounded by the
family that loved her most of all. Margaret was always
grateful for what came her way, and the fact that she never
lost her English accent that so many adored.
Margaret is survived by her son, Howard J. Canfield as well
as her three Grandsons and their families; James Harold
Canfield, his wife Kelsey Ann, and grandchildren Joseph
Michael, Samuel James, Waylon Patrick, Aubrey Ann, and Emma
Lucia Gotha-Hart. Samuel Joseph Canfield, his wife Emily
Renee, and grandchildren Devin James and Jackson Faust. John
Alexander (USMC).
Those who knew Margaret will hold a special place in their
hearts for her always, as she watches over them with her
loving husband from heaven above.
No services to be held and cremation to take place. |
