Mable Hemb, 1811 E. Nock Milwaukee, is announcing the engagement of her daughter Tricia Hemb to Robert Welch, both of Port Clinton. The bride-elect is a 1982 graduate of Bay View High School, Milwaukee, and attended the University of Wisconsin. She presently is employed with the Kroger Store in Port Clinton.

Parents of the groom are Iona Rardon of Clarksburg, W. and Rose Welch, Port Clinton, and the late Harry R. Welch. Mr. Welch is a 1977 graduate of Port Clinton High School and Vanguard Vocational School. He attended Terra Technical College where he studied law enforcement.

He presently is employed as a service technician for Schiets Motor Sales, Fremont, and as a part time patrolman with the Fremont Police Department. The couple are planning a summer 1985 wedding.

Mary Edith Bassler passed away on Saturday, April 10, 2021, after some months of declining health. She was 92 years old, born on December 29, 1928, in Valley Bend, West Virginia, to Jesse and Emma Welch. Mary came from a big family. She had four brothers, four sisters, and ninety-three first cousins, twelve of which were double first cousins. She grew up in East Daily, West Virginia.

Mary was the first in her family to attend college. After a two-year training in business college, she moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There she met her beloved husband, Edwin Eugene Bassler. Edwin and Mary were married on August 2, 1952. They had two children Kevin Eugene Bassler of Houston, Texas, and Kelly Jean Harrington of Evansville, Indiana. Mary was widowed in 1984.

Mary was an accountant and worked for multiple car dealerships in Pittsburgh, eventually as secretary-treasurer.
She was revered by her peers and consistently won numerous awards for her account reporting accuracy and timeliness. She retired in 1990.

In retirement, Mary devoted herself to caring for her physically disabled son. With Kevin, who is now a Professor and Chair of the Department of Physics at the University of Houston, she traveled broadly. Together they visited all 48 contiguous states, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and made multiple trips to Europe to visit Germany, Norway, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy. She was particularly fond of driving fast on the German autobahn.

She also enjoyed spending time with her daughter and her daughter’s growing family. She loved children and would “light up” when talking with, seeing, or caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary had a deep Christian faith. She was well-liked for her kindness and her gift of hospitality. Many graduate students at the University of Houston considered her their adopted grandmother. She was a great cook and loved entertaining. The Thanksgiving meals she cooked with her wild rice and chestnut stuffing are legendary. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

Mary is survived by her son and her daughter, who is an Inpatient Mental Health Tech. She is also survived by three granddaughters (Emma Kaitlin Satterfield, Abigail O’Brian Luckett, and Claire Alexandra Harrington, all of Evansville, Indiana), three great-grandchildren (Carter David Satterfield, Amelia Mary Satterfield, and Resse Alexandra. Satterfield, all of Evansville, Indiana), one sister (Ethel Marie Swiger of Elkins, West Virginia), and a fraction of her cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 16, 2021, at 4:30. pm at the A.D. Bruce Religion Center on the University of Houston campus. Her remains will be buried next to her husband’s in the coming weeks.

Mr. Roy Welch, age 85 years, a resident of Route 1, Beverly, the East Dailey Community, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at his home.

He was born June 4, 1930 at Elkwater, WV a son of the late Jesse L. Welch and the late Emma Arbogast Welch. On April 17, 1954 at Oakland, MD, he was married to Jo Etta Haddix Welch who survives near Beverly.

Also surviving is one son, Bradley Roy Welch of Beverly; three daughters, Joni Lee Moore and husband David, Mill Creek, Kimberly Dawn Welch, Valley Bend and Joyce Piper and husband Tim of Pennsylvania.
One grandson, Eric Moore and three sisters, Mary Bassler, Houston, TX, Ethel Swiger, Elkins and Pauline Pingley of Beverly also survive.

Also preceding him in death were three brothers, Harry, Sherman and Howard Welch, two infant sisters, Barbara Fern Welch and Lena Lucille Welch and a grandson Jared Roy Moore.

Mr. Welch was a graduate of Beverly High School and was a Veteran of the United States Navy. He was employed as a Caster for Concast Metal prior to his retirement. He was a Life Member of Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Friends may call from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm Saturday, March 19, 2016 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm Saturday from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley officiating. Interment will follow in the Mount Vernon Cemetery near Beverly where full military honors will be accorded at the gravesite by members of the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program, H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Valley Bend Presbyterian Church, c/o Denver Chewning, Rt. 1, Box 52, Beverly, WV 26253 in memory of Mr. Welch. Kimberly “Kim” Dawn Welch, 62, a resident of Valley Bend, passed from this life Friday, March 12, 2021, at her home. She had been in her usual health and death was unexpected.

Kim was born August 30, 1958, in Elkins, a daughter of the late Roy Junior and JoEtta Lee (Haddix) Welch, who survives. Also left to cherish her memory are two sisters, Joni and Joyce, one brother Brad, and one nephew, Eric Moore.

Preceding her in death besides her father was a nephew, Jared Moore.

Kim graduated from Tygarts Valley High School with the class of 1976.
She worked various jobs during her life, most recently as a home care worker. She had recently retired.

She really never ever met a stranger and enjoyed her family and many friends. She will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Mrs. Mildred Pauline Pingley, age 85 years, a resident of the Files Creek Community, Beverly, passed away Monday, December 31, 2018 at her home.

She was born September 7, 1933 at Elkwater, WV a daughter of the late Jesse L. and Emma Arbogast Welch. On May 30, 1953 at Oakland, MD, she was married to Charles G. Pingley who preceded her in death on December 4, 2004.

Surviving are two daughters, Christine Rizzio and husband Mark of Beverly and Angela Spessert and husband Dana of Memphis, TN.
Two sisters, Ethel Swiger of Elkins and Mary Bassler of Houston, TX; five grandchildren, Stephanie Hurst, and Matt, Allyson Scott and Mike, Bryan Rizzio and Tammie, Kyatt Spessert and Emma Spessert; two step grandchildren, Melonee Jordan and Matthew Spessert and five great grandchildren, Morgan and Nicholas Rizzio, Lincoln Scott, Brady and Elizabeth Hurst also survive.

Also preceding her in death was one son, Robert G. Pingley, infant sisters, Lena and Barbara Welch and brothers, Harry, Howard, Sherman and Roy Welch and a great grandchild, Autumn Scott.

Mrs. Pingley was a graduate of Beverly High School, a Homemaker and a member of the Tygart Valley Baptist Church. Friends may call from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Friday, January 4, 2019 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, January 5th from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Jack Howell officiating. Interment will follow in the Brick Church Cemetery near Huttonsville.
