MRS. MAGGIE ARTHUR -- Forty-nine
years old, of 754 Johnstown road, who died Tuesday evening
in a Huntington hospital, will be buried tomorrow in the
Earl cemetery following funeral services at, 2 o'clock at
the Apostolic Gospel Church, Jackson avenue and Twelfth
street, with Rev. B. R. Duncan, pastor, officiating.
Surviving are her husband, Garland Arthur; three sons, Lloyd
and Francis Arthur, of Huntington, and Earl Arthur, of
Youngstown, O.; five daughters, Mrs. Flora Jackson, of
Milton, Mrs. Cora Adkins, Mrs. Stella Simmons and Mrs.
Virginia Short, of Huntington, and Libby and Betty Arthur at
home; six brothers, Clyde Beckett, of Milton, Harry, Carl
and John Beckett of Youngstown, Bill Beckett, of Columbus,
and Wade Beckett, of Russell, Ky.; and two sisters, Mrs.
Liza Hotiski, of Youngstown, and Mrs. Mamie Hall, of
Proctorville. |

HARRY LENVIL JACKSON, 84, of
Milton, passed away Thursday, December 10, 2015.
He was born December 27, 1930 in Cabell County, a son of the
late Amos and Flora Jackson.
He is also preceded in death by
his wife Eloise Jackson, and one daughter Arlena; and his
granddaughter Tiffany.
He is survived by two daughters, Mary and Vada; two sons,
Ronnie and Eddie; one sister Edna Davis; grandchildren, Adam
(Tiffany) his caretaker, Derek (Sarah), Jerri and Ashley;
Jessie, Michael and a host of other grandchildren; and
special great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Cylie and Adam Chase
and a host of other great-grandchildren. |
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m., Tuesday, December
15, 2015 at Wallace Funeral Home, Milton with Pastor Troy
Nicely officiating. Burial will follow in Balls Gap

Roger Dale "Doc" Adkins, 54 of
Huntington, WV passed away May 27, 2009 while visiting in
Lee County, FL.
Roger was born December 22, 1954 in Huntington, WV a son of
Roy Adkins Jr. and the late Geraldine Connard Adkins. He was
a former employee with Cabell Huntington Hospital with over
25 years experience. Roger was a Vietnam Veteran who proudly
served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. He had
been a member of Highlawn Full Gospel Assembly where he was
an Elder, a Usher and a singer in the New Beginning Choir.
Roger was also preceded in death by a brother, Albert L.
Adkins.
Survivors include his father, Roy Adkins Jr. of Huntington;
a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and C.L. King and their
children, Megan, Caitlyn and Cameron all of Proctorville,
Ohio; a son and daughter-in law Jason Allen and Jennifer
Adkins and their son Jason Jr. all of Huntington; two
brothers David and Ronnie.
He is also survived by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, his
church family and friends as well as his friends throughout
the community.
Roger is now in Heaven with the love of his life, the late
Patricia Ann Adkins. His soul is at peace in the Heavens
with "Patty" and his mother Geraldine Adkins. To most
everyone he was known as "Doc", but to his grandchildren he
was lovingly known as Poppy.
Please join us June 11, 2009 at 11 am as we honor Roger's
memory at Ferrell-Chambers Funeral Home, 924 20th Street,
Huntington. Everyone is welcome to share their memories as

She was born October 23, 1988 in Huntington, WV a

In addition to her parents, she
is survived by two sisters, Ashley and J.J. Jackson both of
Milton; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Adam and
Tiffany Jackson of Milton, Derek and Sarah Jackson of
Barboursville; maternal grandparents, Darrell and Jerri
Clark of Kenova; paternal grandfather, Harry Jackson of
Milton; great grandmother, Gladys Chapman; several aunts and
uncles, Drema and Kevin Workman, Paulette Clark and Lawrence
Basenback, Chris and Herman McCallister, Darrell and Kelly
Clark, Ronnie and Marge Jackson, and Vada Byrd; niece,
Olivia Jackson; best friend, Jessey Shannon; friends, Nikki
Black and Samantha Chadwell; and a host of cousins.
Tiffany was a kind hearted, loving person who always had a
smile. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved

Emmit Thompson, 75 of Huntington, WV passed away,
Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at the Emogene Dolin Jones
Hospice House.
James was married for 56 years to Cheryl Anne Murphy
Thompson. He was a retired supervisor from Steel of
West Virginia. In addition, he was a deacon and
member of Jackson Ave. Church of God Holiness. He
loved fishing and hunting and enjoyed antique cars
and car shows.
Survivors include his daughters, Teresa Kelly and
granddaughters, Samantha Hughart and Tabitha Gibson;
his daughter, that also was his caregiver, Kimberly
and husband Stephen Watts; granddaughter, Daniele
Watts and grandson, Tyler Watts; |
one brother, David and wife
Barbara Thompson; nephew, Michael and wife Kenessa Thompson,
their children Kenley, Kelsey, and Lucas; nephew, Mark and
wife Stacey Thompson and their children, Clara and Cade; and
one niece, Kelly and Ivan Wisley and their children, Iva,
Lucy and Ryder.
A special thank you to Dr. William Beam for over 20 years of
care; St. Mary's Hospital, Encompass, and especially the
Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House nurses for all your care
and kindness.
Visitation will be Saturday, August 26, 2023 at the Jackson
Avenue Church of God Holiness from noon until 1:00 PM with
the funeral following at 1:00 PM at the Church officiated by
Pastor Mark Thompson. Burial will be in the Earl Cemetery,
Skyview Drive, Huntington, WV. Reger Funeral Home is
assisting the family with the arrangements. |

HUBBARD
— Patty Summers is all about helping people. Just
don’t ask her to talk about herself because she has
a hard time doing so.
Summers, a Hubbard native who graduated from Hubbard
High School in 1975, is the founder of the
Youngstown Blue Coats, a 501(c)3 organization that
collects and distributes coats and other cold
weather gear to those in need, with a special focus
on veterans. |
It started about six years ago, and its motto is “In America

“My successes in life were the result of proper parenting
and a team effort,” Summers said.
She was the oldest of five children, having three brothers
and one sister.
“Looking back I had to, at times, be a mother figure. I was
the oldest of five children and was responsible for
completing the monumental ‘to do’ list when arriving home on
the bus from school each day because my mom was working many
hours to help support us, as well as my dad,” Summers said
of being one of millions of “latchkey” kids nationwide in
the 1960s and 1970s.
However, Summers said this independent, difficult and
sometimes dysfunctional life made her a better person. She
admits that it helped her learn the importance of sharing
and giving, and not to take anything for granted.
One of her idols is St. Teresa of Calcutta, and she quotes
her often, with phrases like “If you judge people, you have
no time to love them” and “Be kind to others no matter what.
No one should come to you for help without going away
feeling better and happier.” Summers has spent her entire
life trying to live by these examples and use the life
skills she learned in her youth.
Summers has had various jobs beyond being a wife and mother.
She worked in downtown Youngstown in the offices of Strouss
department store and sold Tupperware before the children
started school. Afterward, she became a preschool teacher
and taught for five years. Then she worked as a waitress,
worked at several stores and finally drove a school bus for
10 years in the Hubbard Local School District.
Her nurturing nature extends beyond her husband of 47 years,
Patrick, son, Alex, and daughter, Sharon. The couple also
has two grandchildren, Lucian and Isabella.
“For four years, I assisted my husband and brother-in-law
taking care of my mother-in-law who had several heart
attacks and strokes as well as kidney failure, and my
father-in-law, who had colon cancer and needed his pills
crushed up daily and fed through a tube since he couldn’t
eat anything by mouth,” she said.
The Youngstown Blue Coats began after Summers helped a
friend from Campbell collect and distribute winter coats to
the homeless.
“I discovered soon after that I should never be judgmental
and I should always be compassionate. The world would be
more understanding and compassionate if they could only see
what we come across when helping the homeless,” Summers
said.
“I met military men and women who have lost their job, lost
their home and then Family Services took their children
away. One woman even said she just wants a place to call
home so she can get her children back. We have come across
homeless who seem to be freezing and close to death but
refused coats and other clothing. One poor fellow in
20-degree weather said, ‘please give that coat and boots to
someone more deserving than me.’ He then walked away with
just a shirt on his back,” she said.
Summers and her staff give 100 percent of all proceeds,
whether received from donations or from grants, back to the
organization. The Youngstown Blue Coats gave away 15 coats
in its first year. Last year, on its fifth anniversary, it
gave away 2,500 coats and other types of clothing for the
needy. In the first month of 2023, Youngstown Blue Coats
already had assisted more than 200 people.
The organization has grown to assist people in 11 counties
in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and it now works with 58 agencies.
Summers was just named to the Marquis “Who’s Who in
America,” which contains short biographies of great
achievements people have made. |

HUBBARD
– Hilda M. Ganter, 76, died Saturday evening, Dec.
27, 2014 at Northside Hospital.
She was born Sept. 9, 1938 in Huntington, W.Va., a
daughter of Lloyd and Gladys Short Arthur and moved
to Hubbard in 1950.
Mrs. Ganter, a homemaker, attended Hubbard High
School.
Her husband, James P. Ganter, whom she married Nov.
3, 1973, died in December 1998.
She leaves four sons, Michael Johnston of Naples,
Fla., Mark Johnston of Youngstown, |
Thomas (Jan) Johnston of Hubbard
and James Johnston of Hubbard; three daughters, Cathy (Bill)
Cummings of Hubbard, Lisa Johnston of Bolivar and Jeanene
(Kevin) Swanson of Hubbard; two brothers, Charles Arthur of
Augusta, Ga. and Fred (Ilene) Arthur of Hubbard; 11
grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She also leaves
her longtime friend, Mabel Zadravec, her Hubbard friends and
extended family in Georgia.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother,
William Arthur.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the
Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home.
Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, two
hours prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.
Hilda’s final resting place will be in Hubbard Union
Cemetery. |

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (MyValleyTributes)
– Roy C. Simmons, 82, passed away peacefully, Sunday, May
29, 2022 in the presence of his loving family.
Roy was born February 14, 1940 in Huntington, West Virginia,
the son of Oscar and Stella Arthur Simmons.
Mr. Simmons was an engineer for the CSX Railroad, retiring
in 2002 after 36 years.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran, Artillery Division.
He attended Bridge of Hope Church in Boardman.
|
Roy’s passion was being outdoors, planting a garden and
growing his beautiful flowers.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, the former
Nancy Tyma, whom he married September 3, 1960. He also
leaves to cherish his memory, his loving daughter, Terri
Lynn and her husband, John Parker, of Howland, who was Roy’s
close companion and handyman. He leaves his only son, Brian
(Joann) Simmons of Poland; two grandchildren, Brianna and
Brandon Simmons; sister, Brenda (Frank) DeSimone of
Austintown and two brothers, Daniel (Norma) Simmons of
Girard and Larry (Julia) Simmons of Orlando, Florida
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers,
Ronald and Joseph Simmons.
There are no calling hours or services.
Arrangements were entrusted to the professional care of the
Rossi Brothers and Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Avenue in
Boardman. Family and friends are encouraged to offer prayers

Virginia V. Arthur Cline, 93, of
Huntington, WV died Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Heritage
Center in Huntington.
She was born April 4, 1918 in Huntington, a daughter of the
late George Garland and Maggie Beckett Arthur. Virginia was
retired from Owens Illinois.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Herbert Cline and one daughter, Shirley M. Johnson.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, William Joe
and Kay Short of Huntington; one daughter, Jean “Tootsie”
Cooper of Huntington; one sister, Betty Fitzpatrick of
Altamonte Springs, FL; 13 grandchildren; 8 great
grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, January
30, 2012 at Rollins Funeral Home. The family will receive
friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. There

CHERLY
KAY SHORT, 71, of Huntington passed away Friday,
August 14, 2015 at the Cabell-Huntington Hospital.
She was born July 7, 1944 in Pikeville, Ky., a
daughter of the late Fred and Ethel Sesco Jackson.
She was a homemaker and a graduate of Wayne High
School.
She is survived by her beloved husband
William "Joe" G. Short; one son Joe Short of
Culpeper, Va.; one daughter Cristina Glover of
Nashville, TN.; one sister Gail Wells of Akron,
Ohio; six grandchildren Dave, Alesha, Heather, Josh,
Isaac and Daniel and six great- grandchildren.
Friends called Tuesday, August 18, 2015 from 3-4
P.M. at Rollins Funeral Home with a memorial service
following at 4:00 P.M. with Pastor Ronald Joplin

Preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Gladys
Scarberry Cooper; one sister; and three brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Jean "Tootsie" Short Cooper;
daughter, Linda Ann (Wayne) Smith; sons, Keith Cooper and
Kevin (Teresa) Cooper; one grandson; sisters, Cathy Travis
and Penny Caldwell; brothers, Goble Cooper and Jack Thacker;
and several nieces and nephews.
Burial was May 8, 2006, in Spring Valley Memory Gardens. |
