SHINNSTON — Betty L. Markley
Hartman, 68, of B Street, Spelter, died at 8:49 p.m.,
Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005, at her residence.
She was born in Clarksburg Sept. 11, 1937 a daughter
of Martha Clark Markley Sendling and Russell Sendling of
Cambria and the late Harry Markley.
Surviving are two sons, Michael Hartman and his wife,
Melissa, York, PA, Robert Hartman, Weston; one daughter and
son-in-law, Mildred and Donald Menendez, with whom she made
her home in Spelter; seven grandchildren, Rusti Menendez and
her fiancé, Derek Young, Clarksburg, Danny Menendez, Spelter,
Tina Marvin and her husband, Michael, Wallace, Christopher
Hartman, Weston, Todd Gillespie, Clarksburg, Alissa Hartman
and Kirsten Sterner, both of York; two great-grandchildren,
Letina and Michael Marvin and one great-grandchild, expected
in April; four brothers, Russell Sendling, Jr., and his
wife, Sue, Lamberts Run, James Sendling, Worthington, John
Sendling and his wife, Tammy, Spelter, Steve Sendling and
his wife Sandy, Wallace; six sisters, Frances Binegar and
her husband Donnie, Gypsy, Hazel Allman and her husband
Clint, Morgantown, Jeanette Bunnell and her husband Dorman,
Lumberport, Ruby O’Dell, Sardis, Debbie Barr and her husband
Charles, Lumberport, Carol Stire and her husband Robert,
Spelter; and two children that were special to her, Gayle
Marie Oberacker, Lumberport, and Kaylie Michelle Gower,
Clarksburg.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Duey Lee
Markley and Roger Dale Sendling and one nephew, Robert Stire.
Betty had worked as a cook for the Harrison County Board of
Education and formerly worked as a waitress for the Terminal
Restaurant at the City Lines Bus Station in Clarksburg and
the O’Days Seafood of Clarksburg. She had also worked in
housekeeping at the Town House West Motel.
She was an active member of the Bible Church of God at
Wilsonburg and enjoyed attending church. She also enjoyed
playing cards and being with her grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Perine Funeral Home, Rt. 19 south,
Shinnston, from 3-9 p.m. Friday, where funeral services will
be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, with Pastor James Nuzum
officiating. Interment will be in the Shinnston Masonic
Cemetery.
The Perine Funeral Home is honored to serve the Hartman
family. |

Gay Markley, 87, of Sun Valley,
and a former resident of Katy Lick for over 30 years, passed
away Tuesday morning, July 23, 2013, in the United Hospital
Center.
She was born on Indian Run, Bristol, on November 2, 1925,
the youngest and last surviving child of the late Claude and
Almerta (Shaver) Stewart.
On January 10, 1943, she married Elbert Markley, who
preceded her in death on January 4, 1987.
She is survived by two daughters, Elberta Davis and her
husband Warren, Toledo, OH, and Charlotte Gunter and her
husband Nolan, Lost Creek; two grandsons, Kevin Davis and
his companion Karen Daly, Durant, IL; and Darren Davis,
Toledo, OH; a great-granddaughter, Mariah, a great-grandson,
Marcus; a sister-in-law, Eugenia Stewart, Reynoldsville; and
several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in
death by four brothers Howard Stewart, Glenn Stewart, Frank
Stewart and Brent Stewart; and six sisters Sylvia Myers,
Mabel Whiteman, Garnett Slusser, Thelma Hurst, and infant
sisters Edna and Ruby Stewart.
Gay attended Bristol High School and was a special education
aide for the Harrison County Board of Education and retired
in 1987 after 20 years of service. She was a member of the
Harrison County Association of Retired Employees, and was a
volunteer at the VFW Post 573, Clarksburg, and American
Legion Post 31, Shinnston. She was a former member of the
Clarksburg Moose and Elks Club. She loved to read, and was
Protestant.

L. Davis, 41, of Toledo passed away Saturday,
October 3, 2015, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in
Toledo.
He was born October 4, 1973, in Toledo to Warren G.
and Elberta "Cricket" (Markley) Davis.
Darren was a graduate of Southview High School class
of '92 and was a self employed truck driver in the
area. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and driving
racecars in his early years. |
Darren drove his favorite K2
racecar at Oakshade Raceway for many years.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dayton
(Margaret) Davis and Elbert (Gay) Markley. He is survived by
his parents; son, Marcus; brother, Kevin; niece, Mariah
Davis; aunts, Charlotte (Nolan) and Regina (Ralph), and also
survived by many friends.
Visitation will be Monday from 5 p.m. until services at 7
p.m. at the Dowling Funeral Home, 7509 New West Road at King
Road (King Rd between Central and Sylvania Ave.) , Toledo,
419-841-8111. Interment will be in Clarksburg, WV. |

Mr. Charles Leonard Beachler,
age 56, formerly of Wilsonburg and a resident of Sunbridge
Care and Rehabilitation Center, Salem, WV since December
1999 went to be with the Lord on October 1, 2003 after an
extended illness. He was born in Clarksburg, WV July 3, 1947
a son of the late Joseph Leonard
[stet] Beachler and Mary Markley
Beachler Smith and was a step-son of John Harold Smith.
Surviving are two brothers, James E. Smith, Lake Charles,
Louisiana and Harold E. Smith, Wilsonburg, WV, two sisters,
Cathie A. Cox and her husband Terry, Clarksburg, WV and
Connie S. McDaniel and her husband Dennis, Weston, WV, four
nephews, James E. Smith II, Orlando, FL, Harold E. Smith II
and wife Jen, Greensburg, NC, Jonathan Smith, Wilsonburg, WV
and Casey McDaniel, Weston, WV, five nieces, Marsha Rose and
husband Gary, Lake Charles, LA, Tiffany Lantz, Lost Creek,
WV, Misty Vincent and husband Jonathan, Salem, WV, Mandy
Smith, Wilsonburg and Deseree McDaniel, Weston, WV, six
great nephews, Gary and Michael Rose, Lake Charles, LA,
Josiah E. Smith, Greensburg, NC, Alex Vincent, Salem, WV and
Jeffrey and John Hawkins, Lost Creek, WV, three great
nieces, Mercedes Hawkins, Lost Creek, WV, Amanda Rose, Lake
Charles, LA and Angel Smith, Wilsonburg, WV, several cousins
and Shawn Wycoff, who was a very special caregiver and a
best friend to Charles. He knew Charles better than anyone.
Also the staff at Sunbridge who took him under their wing
and treated him like one of their family.
Mr. Beachler was also preceded in death by one sister,
Judith Ann Markley.
Charles graduated from Victory High School in Clarksburg
with the class of 1965. Once out of school he worked at
McNichol Pottery, then at the Gore Hotel. In 1975 he worked
at United Hospital Center in the kitchen and then he went to
work at the Harrison County Senior Citizens Center. In 1980
he moved to Orlando, FL and started working for the Orange
County Heath Department specializing in Care for the Elderly
and Meals on Wheels till the time he became ill and had to
return to WV.
Charles’ greatest joy in life was being with his family and
friends and with his nieces and nephews who knew him as
their “Uncle Monkey”, he loved to bake and cook for them. He
also loved to read and watch old movies. He was always ready
for a good laugh and always had a smile on his face. He will
be missed by many.
At his request, he donated his body to science through the
WVU Human Gift Registry in hopes of one day finding a cure.
Any memorial contributions may be made to the American
Cancer Society or the American Lung Association.
A memorial service will be held at the Mt. Clare Community
Church, Rt. 25, Mt. Clare Road on Saturday, October 18, 2003
at 3:00 P.M. with the Rev. Roger Baker officiating. |

Mr. James Elbert “Smitty” Smith,
age 61, of Salem, formerly of Anmoore & Clarksburg WV,
passed away at 8:01 P. M. Thursday, January 19, 2012 at the
Salem Care & Rehab Center (Sunbridge) in Salem, WV.
He was born February 10, 1950 in Clarksburg, WV a son of the
late John Harold “Smitty” Smith and Mary Ethel Markley Smith
from Chiefton Hill, Wilsonburg, WV. He was the grandson of
the late Willy & Salina (Clutter) Markley & the late Alvin &
Hazel (McKee) Smith.
Surviving Mr. Smith are: a son & daughter-in-law, James
“Jamie” Smith II & wife, Sonia “Sunni” , of Clarksville, TN,
a daughter, Marsha Smith Rose, Stillwater, OK, three
grandchildren; Michael Shane Rose, Gary James Rose & Amanda
Marie Rose, all of Oklahoma, a brother; Harold “ED” Smith &
his
companion, Shirley Thompson, Chiefton Hill, Reynoldsville,
WV, two sisters; Cathy & Terry Cox, Clarksburg, WV and
Connie & Dennis McDaniel, Weston, WV, a former wife, Brenda
Baker Smith Lawson, several nieces & nephews; “Little” Eddie
Smith, Misty Smith, Mandy Smith, Johnathon Smith, Tiffany
Lantz, Desiree McDaniel & Casey McDaniel, his great nieces &
nephews; whom were all so very fond of their “Uncle Jimmy”,
Josiah Smith, Alex Vincent, Sammy Vincent, Angel Smith,
Damien Smith, Mercedes Hawkins, Jeffrey Hawkins & John
Robert Hawkins, and a best friend (and cousin) Regina
“Jeannie” Shingleton.
Mr. Smith was, in addition to his parents & grandparents,
preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Bower Smith, a
brother, Charles Beachler and a sister, Judith Ann Markley.
“Smitty” had been employed as a roofer all of his life,
working in West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida
and Louisiana. He loved doing yard sales and collecting all
kinds of writing pens. He loved having cookouts and spending
time with his family & friends. He will be sadly missed by
all who knew him.
A very special “Thank You” to Peoples Hospice, his aides
Mariann & Carly and the nurses, Kathy Clevenger & LeAnn. You
all were great to him. Also a big “Thank You” to Salem Care
& Rehab Center (Sunbridge) of Salem, all the aides and
nurses that cared for James “Smitty” in any way. You were
all so caring and compassionate - “Thank You”. He thought of
all of you as his family.
A special “Thank You” to Mike, his roommate and to Heather,
he called “Red”, you both were truly his friends.
A Memorial Service Will be held at the Mt. Clare Community
Church in Mt. Clare, WV on Thursday , Feb. 9, 2012 at 7:00
P.M. |

CLARKSBURG — Harold
Edward Smith Sr., 58, Chieftain Hill, Reynoldsville,
WV, passed away from injuries from an automobile
accident at 5:52 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, on
Route 50 west of Clarksburg, WV.
He was born March 4, 1955, in Harrison County, WV, a
son of the late John Harold Smith and Mary Ethel
Markley Smith.

Surviving are his ex-wife, Sally
Ann Parker Smith; his girlfriend, Shirley Lynn Thompson; two
sons, Harold Edward Smith Jr. and Johnathon Matthew Smith;
two daughters, Misty Dawn Smith and boyfriend, Jonathan
Vincent and Mandy Marie Smith and boyfriend, Stanley Dix;
two sisters and brothers-in-law, Cathie Ann and Terry Cox
and Connie Sue and Dennis McDaniel; nine grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Smith was also preceded in death by two brothers,
Charles Leonard Beacher and James Albert Smith and a sister,
Judith Ann Markley.
“Ed” was Baptist by faith. He had been a driver for the RC
Bottling Co. in Clarksburg for a number of years before
becoming a supervisor for WIANS Janitorial Services, where
he worked for more than 15 years.
Friends may call at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East
Main Street, Clarksburg, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Dec.
27, 2013, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m.
with the Reverend Roger L. Baker Sr. presiding. Interment
will follow in Greenlawn Masonic Cemetery. |

Cathie
Ann Cox, 59, of Clarksburg, WV, passed away on
Monday, April 30, 2019 at the UPMC Shadyside
following an extended illness.
She was born in Clarksburg, on March 30, 1960, a
daughter of the late John and Mary Markley Smith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Terry Cox
on May 10, 2014.
Cathie is survived by one daughter, Tiffany Lantz of
Clarksburg; two grandchildren, Mercedes Hawkins and
John Robert Hawkins; and her sister, Connie McDaniel
and husband Dennis of Weston. Cathie is also
survived by her group of soul sisters.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was
preceded in death by her grandson, Jeffrey “Puzzles
“Hawkins; and three brothers, James, Edward and
Charles Smith. |
Cathie was a caregiver and
catered special events. She enjoyed making wine and was the
winner of the WV Italian Heritage Wine Competition. When her
husband was living the two of them enjoyed drag racing and
she especially loved watching Terry race his car.
Family and Friends may call at the Amos Carvelli Funeral
Home on Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., where the
funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at
11:00 a.m.
Interment will follow in the Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery.

Jeffrey
William “Puzzles” Hawkins, 20, of Clarksburg, went
to be with his heavenly father on Monday November
19, 2018 as a result of an automobile accident.
He was born in Clarksburg on November 2, 1998, son
of Tiffany Lantz and Jeffrey W. Hawkins and his wife
Nichole Dolan, with whom he made his home. In
addition to his parents, he is survived by three
sisters, Mercedes Hawkins, Haley Hawkins, and
Lyndszy Blankenship; two brothers, John Robert
Hawkins and John “Caleb” Dolan; maternal
grandmother, Cathie Cox and maternal grandfather,
Roy Lantz of Clarksburg; paternal grandparents,
William “Bill” and Sandra “Sue” Hawkins,of
Clarksburg; and his extended family, Mitch, Amy, and
Chase Lucas. |
He leaves behind his aunts,
Carol (Jay) Evans, Cheryl (Sam) Hawkins, and Cathy (Guy)
Mobley, Latisha (Nick) Higgins, Samantha Lantz, and numerous
cousins, great aunts, and great uncles. He also leaves his
loving church family at the Congregational Missionary Church
in Stonewood.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Terry
Cox and great aunt Courtney Cottrill.
When Jeffrey was little, he loved being with his family and
spending time at Holly River State Park, camping, swimming
and fishing. He attended Horizons youth when he was little.
He played basketball, baseball, and youth football mostly
for South Harrison Hawks. He loved animals, dogs, cats and
especially snakes. Jeffrey was a 2017 graduate of Liberty
High School. He was actively involved in the North Central
West Virginia Emmaus and Chrysalis Community and served on
the Chrysalis Board of Directors. He volunteered weekly at
Congregational Missionary Church’s youth group and served as
a leader each summer at both CMC Youth Camp and Camp ReJoice.
He enjoyed working with children through Celebration Place
at Celebrate Recovery at Clarksburg Baptist Church and also
through Harrison County Parks and Recreation’s Summer
Program. He was quick to volunteer for missions projects, to
serve anonymously, and to lend a helping hand to anyone in
need. Jeffrey was a devout follower of Jesus and an avid
fisherman who especially loved trips to Bergoo, WV. He was
also a devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys. Affectionately
known as Puzzles, he had a contagious smile and a gift for
comedic timing. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and
loved him.
Family will receive friends at Davis Funeral Home, 124 Olen
Thomas Dr., Clarksburg, on Tuesday November 27, 2018 from
3-8PM; Funeral Services will be held at Congregational
Missionary Church on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 12:00 noon
with Reverend Sherman Goodwin and Reverend Austin Lynch
Presiding. Visitation will be held one hour before service.
Internment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. |

Edward E. “Tink” Gower,
age 82 of Wilsonburg, WV departed this life on Tuesday, June
17, 2008, at his residence. He was born in Lost Creek, WV on
April 21, 1926, a son of the late Parker Gower and Maude
(Scott) Gower.
His wife, Wilma Rose (Markley) Gower, preceded him in death
on Mar. 17, 1995.
Surviving are two sons, Leonard P. Gower, Clarksburg, WV and
Kenneth L. Gower and his companion, Linda White, Orlando,
FL, three daughters and sons-in-law, Regina and Tim
Shingleton, Anmoore, WV, Carol S. and Terry Mellott,
Wilsonburg, WV and Sherri and Jim Ninehouser, Mt Clare, WV,
one sister, Lora Mae Dye, Mt. Clare, WV, 13 grandchildren,
Michael Gower, VA, Clyde Smyth, Oakland, CA, Amy Lane and
Christopher Gower, Orlando, FL, Davida Webb, Daytona Beach,
FL, Chad Swiger, Anmoore, Jeannette McGary, Stonewood, Josh
Swiger, Clarksburg, Cory Shingleton Anmoore, Mark Gerrard,
Aviana A.F.B., Italy, Jason Gerrard, Wilsonburg WV, Sara
Mellott, NC, Cheyenne Westfall, Mt Clare, 18 great
grandchildren; Christopher Lane, Brittany Lane, Justin Lane
all of Orlando, FL, Miranda Swiger, Daytona Beach, FL,
Hunter Webb, Daytona Beach FL, Jarrod Richards, Clarksburg,
Jonah McGary, Hannah McGary and T’ah McGary all of
Clarksburg,, Jacob Swiger, Layton Swiger, Mackenzie Doak,
Anmoore, Jarrod Richards , Hayley Swiger and Emma Swiger all
of Clarksburg, Farah Noel Gerrard and Victoria Rose Gerrard
both of Aviano A.F.B., Italy and
Desiree Smyth and Angelica Smyth, Oakland, CA. He was
preceded in death by 3 brothers, Parker Gower, Jr., Everett
Franklin Gower and Harold W. Gower 1/2 brothers, Raymond
Gower,and Willie Gower and ˝ sisters Marguerite Strader,
Blanche Morgan, Maggie Bender and Mabel Mikes. Mr. Gower was
Baptist by faith.
He was retired from the U. S. Postal Service as a Clerk. He
and his wife Wilma operated Wilma and Tinks Farmer’s Supply
Store in Wilsonburg.
Mr. Gower was a member of the Clarksburg Masonic Lodge #155,
A.F. & A.M.. and he was an avid sports fan and horse shoe
player. He was known for operating the horse shoe tournament
in Salem.
He served his country in the U. S. Navy during World War II.
Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home,
329 East Main St., Clarksburg from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Friday
where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sat., June
21, 2008 with the Rev. Don Flanigan presiding. Interment
will be in the Greenlawn Masonic Cemetery.
Military graveside rites will be accorded by the U. S. Navy. |
