Rockford -- Mr. Robert W. Adkison of Rockford, age 70, passed away at Metropolitan Hospital in Grand Rapids on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.

Bob was born on January 3, 1944 in Akron, Ohio to George H. and Jean B. Adkison. He attended many different schools in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, as his family followed his father's career changes. The family landed in the Grand Rapids area in 1958, where Bob attended Kellogsville and Rogers High School.

Bob was an avid baseball fan and played for Rogers High School Varsity baseball until he graduated in 1962. After high school, Bob attended Ferris State College, and then Grand Valley State, where he graduated in 1968 with a degree in Political Science. In September of 1968, Bob joined the United States Army, where he served and was wounded in Vietnam. He finished his military services in Okinawa, Japan, until he was honorably discharged in 1970 and was awarded the Purple Heart.

On February 2, 1973, he married Cheryl Tudor in Wyoming, MI. They started their family in 1976 when James Robert was born and Kelli Jean followed in 1979. Bob joined the Goodyear Tire Company and became a store manager, opening a new store on Alpine Avenue. Later, he was employed by Motorola as a field representative until he joined the United States Postal Service, where he was employed until retirement in 2008. He also served his fellow mail handlers as their representative for many years.

His aches and pains were never allowed to outshine his love or pride for his family. He could not wait to tell you about hunting with his son and granddaughter, a Tigers or Whitecaps game with family, or fishing with anyone who would join him.

Bob is survived by his wife Cheryl; son James (Stefanie) Adkison; daughter Kelli (Troy) Rose; grandchildren Autumn and Sarah Adkison, Kaylee and Sophia Mihlethaler, Alexis and Gavin Rose; step-father and mother-in-law Tom and Jean Rainey; brother and sister-in-law Mark and Penny Brighton; brother-in-law Jonathan Gates; several nieces and a nephew; and very close friend Terri Krenke.

He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law James Tudor; sister Candace J. Gates; and his grandparents.

A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Pederson Funeral Home, 127 N. Monroe Street NE, Rockford, MI 49341. There will be a time of visitation one hour prior to the service. Mrs. Candace Jo Gates, age 65, went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 13, 2012, while in the love and care of her family and close friends at home.

She was born in Akron, Ohio. Candy married her high school sweetheart, Jonathan in 1967. Together she achieved her lifelong goals to be a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and mentor to her family and friends.

She was diagnosed with an incurable disease in 1974; but, with her smile, Candy successfully overcame the physical, emotional, and mental challenges of Multiple Sclerosis to become an inspiration of faith and courage to all around her.

Candy was preceded in death by her parents, George and Jean Adkison; in-laws, Embert and Ann Gates; and her dear friend, Brian Ponne.

She will always be remembered and loved by her husband, Jonathan; son, Michael and Lorie Gates; daughter, Jeanann and Chad Carlson; grandchildren, Collin and Hailey Gates and Harper Carlson; brother, Robert and Cheryl Adkison; sisters-in-law, Kathy and Don Robach, and Lois Sanborn; brother-in-law, Scott and Joni Gates; many nieces and nephews; and her very close friends, Mary Jo Weidenfeller, Nancy Good, and Kathy Platt.

The service for Mrs. Gates will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 204 W. Cass St., Greenville, MI 48838, with visiting Pastor Jerry Jones officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the Pederson Funeral Home in Rockford, MI from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday and prior to the service on Monday at the church.

BARBERTON Ralph A. Adkison, 61, died June 19, 1985 at Brecksville VA Hospital after a long illness.

He was born in Akron and had been an Akron area resident his entire life. He was employed at Barberton Plastics, as a foreman for over 10 years. He was a member of St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church, and a veteran of the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Adkison is survived by his wife of 37 years, Rosemary; sons, Gregory, Dennis and Philip; daughter, Mrs. Dana (Barbara) Ramsier; grandchildren, Thomas, Deanna, Michelle, James, Susan and Rebecca Adkison, and Matthew Ramsier; mother, Vesta Adkison; and brother, George.

Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at St. Ivancis DeSales Catholic Church. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, 6 to 9 p.m., at the Kucko-Anthony Funeral Home & Parish. Wake services will be held Friday, 8 p.m. Donations may be made to the St. Francis DeSales Endowment Fund.

Rosemary (Steiner) Adkison, 90, passed away on May 26, at the Sterling House of Barberton.

Born in Doylestown on September 4, 1922 to the late Joseph and Mary Steiner, Rosemary had been a lifetime area resident. She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, where she was employed as the parish secretary for 33 years, retiring in 2004.

In addition to her parents, Rosemary was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; son, Phillip; grandson, Tommy; sister, Kathleen; and brothers Richard and Charles.

She is survived by her children, Gregory, Dennis (Susan) and Barbara (Jeff) Moore; grandchildren, Michelle (Justin), Rebecca, Bryan, Matthew, Tyler, Deanna, James and Susan; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Ayden, Carter and Parker; and her sister, Rita Verhotz.

A special thank you goes out to all of the wonderful people at the Sterling House in Barberton for their generous care for Rosemary.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Anthony Funeral Home KUCKO-ANTHONY-KERTESZ CHAPEL, 1990 S. Main St., Akron. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Our dearly beloved Carter Joseph Andes left this earth way too soon on October 24 and passed into the hands of our Lord.

Philip T. Adkison, 44, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at the Cleveland Clinic.

He was born in Akron and had been an area resident for most of his life. He was employed as a mechanic at area auto dealerships. He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church.

Mr. Adkison is survived by his beloved mother, Rosemary of Barberton; daughters, Deanna(Josh) Stewart of Akron and Susan Adkison of Ft. Jackson; son, James of Akron; brothers, Gregory and Dennis of Akron; sister, Barbara Ramsier of Tucson, Ariz.; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends, and was preceded in death by his father, Ralph, in 1985.

Funeral services will be held Friday, 9:30 a.m., at Kucko-Anthony- Kertesz Funeral Home, 95 W. Waterloo Rd., and at 10 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight, 5 to 9, at the funeral home, where parish wake services will be held tonight. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Francis St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Susan R. Johnson, 31, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2016.

A life resident of the Akron area, she was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Iraq and employed by the U.S. Government.

Preceded in death by her father, Phillip Adkison and her grandparents; Susan is survived by her son, Darren Wilson; parents, John and Luann Bunn; siblings, Deanna (Ben) Baier, James Adkison and Katie Bunn; nieces and nephews, Olivia and Julian Adkison, Collin Baier and Jaxson Bills; along with other family members and friends.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, 7 p.m. at the Campfield-Hickman-Collier Funeral Home, 566 W. Park Ave., Barberton 44203. Susan's family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 in memory of Susan. Inurnment will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Park at a later date with military honors.

Ronnie Lee Wilson, born in Clarksburg, W. Va., Jan. 16, 1947, died Sept. 23, 2006 in Anderson, S.C. He was 59.

Formerly of Akron-Green, Ohio, he was currently living in Belton, S.C. Ron was a 1966 graduate of Green High School and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Spiegel Grove. He was employed by Terex in Ohio and worked various jobs in S. Carolina. He enjoyed music, playing cards and car racing.

Preceded in death by father, Roy Wilson, he is survived by mother, Mary Wilson (Joe Haas) of Florence, SC.; daughters, Shelly (Kim) Fessler of Akron, Ohio and Tracy Wilson of Uniontown/Green, Ohio; grandsons, Zi Stalnaker and Zachary Fessler; brother, Mike (Beth) Wilson of Lawton, Okla.; sister, Janet Jasper of Duncan, Okla.; two nephews, one niece, one great-nephew, other relatives and friends.

Cremation has taken place. Private services will be held at a later date.

Jessie L. Bennett, 86 of Cowen passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at Webster County Nursing & Rehab. Center. She was born July 2, 1927 at Holcomb, WV. to the late William Roy Jones and Jessie Stalnaker. She was a lifelong resident of Webster County. She worked at Webster County Memorial Hospital for 15+ years as a Nurse Aide. She also love to play and shout the word BINGO.

Jessie is survived by her sons; Richard (Sharon) Bennett of Brunswick, Ohio, George (Jane) Bennett of Buckhannon, Fred (Charlotte) Bennett of Cowen; daughters; Joan (Allen) Hawkins of Glen Daniels, Debbie (Steve) Wyatt of Cowen and Lisa Bennett of Cowen; sisters; Mary Jean Jones and Naomi (Jerry) Legg both of Pinch. 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great children.

Jessie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert (Bob) Bennett, sons; Robert Bennett and Harold Allen, brother; Bill Jones and 3 grandchildren.

Friends may join the family for visitation on Thursday July 11, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Adams-Reed Funeral Home. Veronica B. Davis 39 of Mount Hope formally of Cowen, WV passed away Thursday March 4, 2010 after a brief illness at CAMC Memorial Hospital. She was born in Ravenna, OH on September 1, 1970 a daughter of Fred and Charlotte Holbrook Bennett of Cowen.
She was a Baptist by faith, enjoyed her family, friends and working. She was a general manager for Chili's.

In addition to her parents, survivors include her husband John "Jack" Davis, Jr. of Mount Hope; son Lex Davis of Mount Hope; daughter, Miranda Davis of Mount Hope; sister, Connie Dawn Bennett Gumm of Summersville; nephews, Garrett and Grant Gumm; and Rhett Thompson; niece, Johnna Thompson. She was preceded in death by a brother Frederick Daniel Bennett.

Friends will be received Sunday March 7, from 5:-8PM at Adams-Reed Funeral Home, Cowen. Online condolences may be made at adamsreedfh.com. Services will be held 10:AM Monday March 8, at Adams-Reed Funeral Home, Cowen with Rev. Dennis Chasteen officiating and at 3:30PM at Morgan Funeral Home, Reedsville, WV with Rev. Steve Allman officiating. Interment will follow in the Arthurdale Cemetery

Wood Marriage??---There may or may not have been a marriage to a Wood. On Madeline's SS App it says she had the last name Wood at some point. This looks like it appeared between the marriage to Shaw in 1947 and death. It is possible, she married Shaw, divorced him, married Wood, divorced Wood and then remarried Shaw. I could find NO records supporting this theory.

What is also odd about the SS App and Claims Index entry is that on May 22, 1998 someone accessed or made a query listing the name as Madeline M Shaw. This is odd because Madeline had no children and Roy Shaw also died in 1991.

SS Death Index was under the name Madeline M Shaw.
