Edward Barnett Dismukes
1858 - 1929 |
|
|
|
|
About the last name of Dismuke or Dismukes. The use of the "s" at the
end of the name can be considered correct. The omission of the "s"
could also be considered correct.
If you are doing research, use both variations of the name in your search.
Documents found, may use both variations of the name within the same branch
of the family. Even in cemeteries, the same family will use both
spellings. Instead of fighting over which spelling is correct, just
accept that both spellings are correct unless you have original source
documentation that can track the specific usage of either spelling over a
period of time.
About the name Edmund vs Edward. Many family trees list the first name
as Edmund. Again a practice of copying the genealogical work of others
without looking at all of the documents first. It is Edward.
If anyone would know, it would be Edward's second wife Willie, whom he
was married to for 30 years before he died. Why would she place Edward
on his grave marker if it was not so.
Also, with this branch of the family, they do consistently use the "s" on
the end of Dismukes. |

Rebob was known for the warmth and generous spirit he showed
to close friends and acquaintances alike, and for the
wonderful cheer and laughter that he brought to all
occasions. He will be greatly missed by his loving family

1932 - In the City
Directory for Wilmington, James is not listed. Dora D
is listed as working for a doctor's office. It is a
possibility that husband James either died or left by this
date. This was the latest edition (1932) of the
directory I could find online. I would need to look at
later editions to prove this theory.
1940 - Could not find Dora and son James in the 1940
Census. They were in Wilmington in 1940 as shown by son
James' high school club associations in the 1942 yearbook when
he was a senior. (see below) |

HIGH POINT - Gwendolyn
Kennedy Brown, 77, of 1718 Huntington Circle, High Point,
died June 19, 2004, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice in
Wilmington, N.C. She had been in declining health for three
years and in critical condition for two weeks.
Mrs. Brown was born May 23, 1927, in Wilmington, a daughter
of Myrtle Johnston Kennedy and R. Vance Kennedy. She was
graduated from Rocky Mount High School and from
Asheville-Buncombe Technical College. She was married to
James Blanie Wilson of Wilmington in 1947. He died in 1986.
She was married to Joe Brown of High Point on Dec. 1, 1990.
She was employed as a statistical clerk with the Atlantic
Coast Line Railroad and subsequently was engaged in school
administrative work in New Hanover County, Burlington and
Asheville. She also served as administrative assistant to
the pastor of Wrightsville Beach Baptist Church.
In High Point, Mrs. Brown was a member of St. Mary's
Episcopal Church and of St. Cecilia Chapter of Episcopal
Church Women. She served as president and treasurer of the
High Point Museum Guild, was active in the Friends of the
High Point Public Library and was a member of the String and
Splinter Club.
She is survived by her husband of the home; a son, James B.
Wilson III of Wilmington; a daughter, Cinda Borzio of
Durham; and four grandchildren.
Funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's
Episcopal Church, High Point, by Dr. Glenn E. Busch with a

1940 - Census
sheet for 1940 is correct for Webster and wife Virginia.
However, the three other family members are supposed to have a last
name of Osment, not Dismukes. I believe Virginia or the census
taker wrote down the wrong info. I did cross-check the
information with the City Directory for Birmingham for 1940.
There is only one Webster M Murphy with a wife Virginia living on
Woodlawn in Birmingham.
The Webster F listed, should be Clarence E Osment. Then Mary
Osment, and then Frank Osment with an age of 22, not 33. |

Theodore Dismuke - b. 1909; d. Jun 9, 1909, Birmingham, Jefferson
Co., AL. 2 months old. Death found in Death Index for
Alabama. |
| |
Thelma or Thelina Dismuke - b. ca 1911;
d. May 13, 1918, Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL 7 years old.
Death indexes for Alabama show this child as Thelina. Without
looking at the original document, it is difficult to know whether the
name should actually be Thelma. The name Thelina is probably a
transcription error. |
