About this marriage.
Yes, Mortinette's maiden name was Long. Her parents were James
E Long and Harriet Parsons. Most family trees on Ancestry.com
have James E Long's parents as Adam Hull Long and Nancy Hart, the
same as Carroll. If this were so, then Carroll married his
"brother's" daughter or his niece. Problem is.....Adam Hull
and Nancy Hart did not have a son by the name of James E Long.
Look at the Census records and Adam's will or at the top of this
page.
However, if you look at the hard-to-read marriage record for James E
Long and Harriet Parson in 1861, James' parents are John G Long and
Susan H Long. This would actually be John H Long and
Susan Hull, the same parents as Adam Hull Long. Adam Hull Long and James E Long were brothers.
Carroll and Mortinette were first cousins. Marriage of first
cousins was infrequent BUT was not uncommon in the
mid 1800's.

Whether this was the
baby's name or not, is unknown. The name came from family
trees on Ancestry.com where they do not bother to source any of
the information. Most just copy information without confirming
it.
What is known, is Montinette had two children that died before
the 1900 Census. Going on this, I searched both birth and
death records from 1882 - 1900 on the WV Culture website using '
l*ng ' as the last name. I then looked at every record,
looking for both Carl and Mortinette as the parents. This
included either birth or death where a baby remained unnamed.
No records were found for a baby who was born or died in 1884
for this couple. I did however find baby Duncan's below. |
| |
|
|
| |
Duncan W Long
- b. Apr 2, 1887; d. May 8, 1887, Black Fork,
Tucker Co., WV |
| |
|
Duncan W Long |
| |
I could find no
birth record for this child. I did however find the death
record. Baby Duncan "Dunkan" was reported to be one month
and six days old on May 8, 1887, Which would make the
birth day Apr 2.
Some family trees have April 8, some have the child born in
1885. Again, no sources given for these alternate birth dates.
Also, Duncan's middle initial could either be a "W" or an "M" |

Death unknown. Some family
trees have her dying in Maryland in 1978. Yes, there
is a Viola Long with a birthday of 30 Aug 1888 and a death
of Jul 1978 in the SSDI. However, it is unlikely that
she went off to Maryland in her senior years unmarried.
Someone has also created an online record at Find A Grave with this
information. There is no marker photo to confirm this
burial. This is most likely another Viola Long. Unless
I see a death certificate or grave marker, I am not
convinced that the Viola Long who died in 1978, is this
Viola Long. |

The birth date given in this record is
February 29, 1890. First, 1890 was not a Leap
Year, so there was no Feb 29, 1890. Second, the
Month and Day given on all historical documents is Feb
5. So the birth "day" is wrong in this record. |
|
| |
There also appears
to be an issue with Claude's birth year. Some documents
have 1890 or 1888. Some have 1894.
The Birth Record above supports that Claude was born in 1890.
Claude was also Deaf according to his WWI Registration. |

1945 - Widow Lessie
marries the widower Phillip Leroy Davis, Jan 27, 1945,
Monongalia Co., WV. Lessie is listed as Rebecca Long
on marriage license.
Phillip Davis becomes both step-father and
father-in-law to Carl Long, Jr, Ida Mae Long, and Marie M
Long. This is because Carl, Ida, and Marie marry three
of Phillip's children; Thelma, Melvin, and Palmer.
There is something odd about this
family only marrying their step-sisters and step-brothers.
I can see it if they were the last people on the
planet....but they were not. Everyone is a cousin AND
an in-law of each other. |

Marie M
Long |
| |
Birth year of Marie
- She was born in 1942. On her marriage license, she
lied and said she was born in 1940, so she would be 18 years
old. If she had been born in Feb of 1940, she would
have appeared with her family in the 1940 Census because
their house was visited in April of 1940 by the Census
taker, when she would have been a couple months old.
Her mother gave consent for the marriage between her and her
step-brother.
Name for Marie
- In all of the historical documents, Marie's name is given
as Marie or Marie M. The 'M' middle initial might
stand for Mortinette. The name Mortinette is provided
in a couple family trees on Ancestry. However, there
is no documentation for this.
