Obituary for Helen Pearl Poe |
Bel Air, Cumberland -- Helen Pearl
Poe, 83, of Bel Air, Cumberland, died peacefully Monday,
November 14, 2016, at home in the presence of her family. She was
born October 3, 1933 in Pinto, MD, to the late Walter N. Yoder
and Lillian P. (Porter) Yoder. She was the fourth of five
children and was preceded in death by her parents and older
siblings, Bill, Velma, and John. She is survived by a younger
brother, Fred, of Hunt Valley, MD.
Helen grew up in Pinto and was
educated in the public school system, graduating from Allegany
High School in 1951. She was a Camper cheerleader and remained a
loyal fan throughout her life. Thereafter, she attended Potomac
State College, graduating in the spring of 1953. It was there
she met her soul mate and future husband of 63 years, Richard C.
Poe of Grafton, WV. He is better known to most as "Dick." Helen
and Dick were married June 20, 1953, in Cumberland, MD.
[Conflicting date. Unless they married twice.]
This
union produced two children, Rich Poe, Flintstone, MD, and
Kristie Hepler, Millboro, VA. Beyond the immediate family are
five grandchildren, Matt Hepler and wife Sarah of Glade Springs,
VA, Kerri Campbell and husband Mike of Millboro, VA, Katie Lewis
and husband Trenton of Cumberland, Amy Clean and husband Gene of
Cumberland, and Darcy Smith and husband Blake of Ellerslie,
MD.
Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren, Kennedy,
Harper, and Ellie Campbell, Brinley and Berkley Lewis, Audrey
and Camrie Clem; daughter-in-law, Sarah Poe; and fifteen beloved
nieces and nephews.
Helen's chosen niche in life was to be a
homemaker. She was a devoted mother and wife and fulfilled this
demanding role with a loving heart. She also worked as a payroll
clerk and receptionist, substitute teacher, Girl Scout leader
and volunteered as an election official. Helen enjoyed her many
friends and possessed a keen wit and sense of humor a quality
she maintained and shared her entire life. In short, Helen was a
good soul whose life enhanced many others'. She will be sorely
missed, but fondly remembered.
