Marie Scott Long, 84, of Fairmont,
Bunner Ridge, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Fairmont General
Hospital. She was born July 27, 1916, in Fairmont, a daughter of
the late Howard Clay and Nora Virginia Holsberry Long.
She was a teacher for 35 years. She retired as principal of
Quiet Dell School in Marion County. She also taught at Mount
Clair and Meadowdale schools. She was a graduate of Parsons High
School and attended Davis and Elkins College. She received a
degree from Fairmont State College.
She was a faithful member of Fairview United Methodist Church on
Bunner Ridge. She was also a member of the Extension Homemakers
and Marion County Retired Teachers' Association. She was a
homemaker.
She is survived by a daughter and spouse, Camilla and Paul
Kettle, of Ijamsville, Md.; a sister, Mabel Gatrell, of Pikerton,
Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in
death by her husband, Willard A. Scott, on Nov. 1, 1979; and a
brother, Ray Long.
Friends may call at Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant
St., Fairmont from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and from 11 a.m. until 1
p.m. Saturday. Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, with
the Rev. Gary Steele officiating. Burial will follow in Beverly
Hills Memorial Gardens. |

Mabel Long Gatrell, 84, of Piketon,
OH, died Sept. 3 at Pleasant Hill Manor, Piketon, OH.
She was born Oct. 28, 1919 in Parsons, the daughter o the late
Howard Clay and Nora Virginia Holsberry Long. On July 6, 1959,
she was united in marriage to William Reed Gatrell who preceded
her in death on April 21, 1994.
Surviving are two sons, David (and Sue) Black of Morgantown,
James (and Betty) Gatrell of Waverly, OH; two daughters Joan
(and Don) Henthorne of Ripley and Cindy (and Patrick) Reynolds
of Mansfield, OH; 13 grandchildren, one great-grandson; two
step-sons William (and Violet) Gatrell of Piketon, OH, Robert
(and Sharon) Gatrell; one step-daughter Sandra (and Carl)
Higginbotham of Iron Station, NC; several step-grandchildren and
step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son Donald Black; a brother Ray
Long and a sister, Marie Scott.
She was a homemaker and was a member of the Piketon Jasper
United Methodist Church.
Friends were received at the Howe Wheeler Boyer Hornback Funeral
Home in Piketon, OH where funeral services were held with the
Rev. John Richards officiating. Interment will take place
Wednesday, Sept. 8 in Parsons City Cemetery. |
