This is a newer homemade cement marker for James. A few bags of cement in a mold. The laser printed aluminum sheet plaque is very recent. Printed with current "printing on metal" technologies. Looks like they used Tapcon concrete screws and a washer to attach the aluminum sheet to the concrete. The information on the plaque is straight from genealogical resources and is correct. For less than $200 bucks, this is a decent grave marker.

Mr. Leon Phillips, age 70 years, a resident of Beverly, passed away Thursday evening, April 30, 2009 in the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He had been in his usual health until the past two months.

He was born February 23, 1939 at Harding a son of the late Walter �Banjo� Phillips and the late Laura Virginia Donaldson Phillips. Surviving is one son, Leon Bradford Phillips, Baltimore, Md., four daughters, Deborah Kay Phillips and fianc� Vernon Berg, Bowden, Sharon Lynn Phillips, Canton, Oh., Karen Jean Stiffler and husband Irvin, Homeworth, OH and Mary Simmons and husband Bill, Kent, OH,

two brothers, Roger Lee Phillips, Elkins and Maynard Phillips, Akron, OH, one sister, Eleanor Phillips, Baltimore, MD, twenty grandchildren and several great grandchildren also survive. Also preceding him in death were one son, Bradford Alan Phillips, three brothers, Wayne, Bob and Randall Phillips and one sister, Carrie Sue Wotring.

Mr. Phillips attended the schools of Randolph County and was employed as a carpenter in Baltimore, MD for many years prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Elkins Senior Center, was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Friends may call from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Sunday, May 3, 2009 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, May 4th from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Dr. Marvin L. Parli officiating. Interment will follow in the Phillips Cemetery near Jimtown. BRADFORD ALAN PHILLIPS, age 47 years, a native of Randolph County, WV and a resident of Pearcy, Arkansas departed this life Monday, September 15, 2008 at Pearcy, Arkansas. Death was attributed to drowning.

He was born Thursday, September 7, 1961 at Elkins, WV a son of Leon Bradford Phillips, who survives at Beverly and Charlotte Florence Shaffer Arbogast, who survives at Alliance, OH with his step-father, Coy "Bud" Arbogast. Also surviving are two sons, Bradford Alan Phillips, Jr., and Matthew Jacob Phillips, both of Dierks, Arkansas; one daughter, Leslie Ann Phillips, Elkins; three brothers, Kevin Michael Phillips, Kerens; Eric Scot Phillips and wife Melissa, Lisbon, OH; Leon Bradford Phillips, Jr., Baltimore, MD; three sisters, Sharon Lynn Phillips, Canton, OH; Deborah Kay Phillips, Bowden; Karen Jean Stiffler and husband Irvin, Homeworth, OH, three grandchildren; and sixteen nieces and nephews.

Bradford had attended the schools of Elkins and Alliance, OH, and he had worked for the Alliance Rubber Company for twenty five years as a Plant Manager and Production Coordinator. He was known as a hard worker, and as a "true neighbor" that enjoyed helping and spending time with his many friends and the elderly in his community. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, loved his family very much, and was a Baptist by faith.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Friday from 6 until 8 PM. Final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 11 AM. The Reverend Rick Snider will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.

On November 15, 2017 Leon B. Phillips Jr. passed away at age 45.

Leon was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting, and baseball from his high school days, but mostly loved his family.

He was the loving father of Katlyn and Dylan Phillips; devoted son of Linda and the late Leon Phillips, Sr.; dear brother of Loretta Cataldi, Tammy Conley, and the late Brad Phillips. He was also blessed with many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Family requests relatives and friends to visit the family owned Gonce Funeral Service P.A. 4001 Ritchie Highway on Monday 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm for a Memorial Gathering. A Memorial Service will be held Monday during evening hours.

Christopher "Chris" M. McKeehen, 56, peacefully entered into heaven on Sunday, June 9, 2013 while in the loving embrace of his devoted wife Cindy, son Dane and surrounded by family and friends.

Chris did everything better than anyone thought possible. He could build anything, fix everything and adorn it all with the most beautiful flowers. He did it all with a smile and twinkle in his eye. He did it for others, never for himself. Most people move to Florida but Chris, born in Ft. Lauderdale moved to New York and loved everything about it, especially the rivers and lakes where he would go to fish his cares away. Fishing was in his blood along with the New York Yankees and NASCAR. He did not need to tell stories about the one that got away, because he caught it, fillet it and grilled it to perfection for his family and friends who he cherished having at his home. His family and friends will miss his warm embrace and loving support, which he gave to them all. He is now fixing St. Peter's heating system and preparing to go fishing with the man from Galilee.

Chris loved his work at The Picotte Companies and The United Companies and they loved him. His mother, Sarah, and nephew, David, preceded Chris in death. He is survived by the love of his life, Cindy, to whom he was married for 32 years, his son Dane of whom he was extraordinarily proud, his father Neil (Modean), brother-in-law, Ricky Riccardo, nephew, Derrick Riccardo, brother, Robert (Ellen) McKeehan, nephews, Michael and Matthew and niece Sarah, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

STAUNTON � Esther Ann (Phillips) Tacy, 69, of Orange Street passed away Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, at her residence.

Mrs. Tacy was born June 17, 1945, in Philippi, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Howard Bennett and Delcia Mary (Phillips) Phillips.

Esther was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Ladies Sunday School class. She retired after 32 years of service from Kroger Food Store, where she was employed as the deli clerk manager. She enjoyed gospel concerts, traveling, and cooking.

Surviving are two sons, David M. Tacy and his wife, Dana, of Verona, and Chris L. Tacy and his wife, Kate, of Staunton; a brother, Howard Joseph Phillips and his wife, Jean, of Montrose, West Virginia; four grandchildren, Brent Tacy and his wife, Jamie, Amber Tacy, Rachel Tacy and Joel Tacy; special friends, Sandy and Gary Huffer; and her devoted pet dog, �Brandi�.

Funeral services for Kenneth E. Phillips, 76, of Painesville, will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Spear-Mulqueeny Funeral Home, 667 Mentor Ave., Painesville.

Mr. Phillips died May 29, 2005, at his residence.

Born Aug. 24, 1928, in Norton, W. Va., he was a Lake County resident for the past 45 years.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of AA for 40 years. Words cannot express how much he was loved by his children and grandchildren. He will be missed deeply and remembered forever in their hearts. Grandpa will be missed.

Mr. Phillips worked as an engineer for the City of Painesville at the light plant.

Survivors are his wife, Florence (Brockway) Phillips, whom he married Aug. 14, 1973; son, Daniel Lee Phillips of Phillips, W. Va.; daughters, Alesia (Ron) Tate of Gypsy, W. Donna Marie Tate, 64, of Gypsy passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2018. She was born June 27, 1954 in Woodbridge, England, daughter of Judy Phillips and the late Kenny Phillips.

Family was very important to Donna. She enjoyed sports, reading her bible, and caring for others.

In addition to her mother, Judy Phillips of Enterprise, Donna is survived by her husband, Russell (Dave) Tate of Gypsy; three sons, Dave (Davy) Tate and wife Melissa of Mannington, Joe Tate and wife Sara of Jordan, MT, and Kenny Tate and companion Michelle Minutelli of Fairmont;

a brother, Danny Phillips of Enterprise; a sister, Aleisia Tate of Gypsy; six grandchildren, Devin Tate, Davina Tate, David Tate, Davin Tate, Josie Tate, and Abby Tate.

In addition to her father, Kenny Phillips, Donna was preceded in death by her twin brother, Kenneth Theobold.

The family will receive friends at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Ave. Fairmont, Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Noon on Thursday in the funeral home with Pastor George Heitman officiating. Interment will follow at Shinnston Memorial Cemetery.

Betty Jean Brady, 79, Sandusky, was called home to be with Lord Jesus Christ on Friday, April 8, 2011, in Firelands Regional Medical Center, following a lengthy illness, with her immediate family by her side.

She was born on January 14, 1932 in Norton, WV to the late Edward and Lillian Phillips. She was a nurse in many of the area hospitals, and retired from J.C. Penney in 1995. Betty was a member of Northpointe Baptist Church. She was instrumental in creating the Girl Scout Softball League in Sandusky, was an avid Detroit Tigers fan, but her greatest thrill was her family.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, James Brady, whom she married on June 18, 1949; son, Michael (Diadra) Brady, Sandusky; daughter, Tina (Steve) Smith, Taylor Mill, KY;

grandchildren, Rebecca (Ed) Leitenberger, Stephen (Amanda) Comer, Jamie Brady, Brian (Jessica) Legg, Brandon Legg, Brett Legg, and Derek Smith; three great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her daughters, Sandra Kay, 2010, Karen Sue, 1998; and a son, James Alfred, 1982.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at 3 P.M. in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Rev. Wally Gilbert will officiate.

James �Jim� Alfred Brady, 88, passed away on Saturday, March 10, 2018 after a brief illness.

He was born January 16, 1930 to James K. and Louise Brady in Mt. Clare, WV. On June 18, 1949, he married Betty Jean Phillips. Together, they had five children.

Jim served in the Army from 1952 to 1954, during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. He retired from Oscar Mayer in Sandusky in 1993 after working there for 25 years. His hobbies included working on and showing his classic car, collecting coins, fishing, and gardening.

He is survived by his two children, Michael (Julie Fisher) Brady, of Holland, Ohio, and Tina (Brady) Smith, of Taylor Mill, Kentucky; eight grandchildren, Rebecca, Stephen, Brian, Brandon, Brett, Amanda, Jamie, and Derek; and five great-grandchildren, Kaylyn, Dana Leigh, Natalie, Parker, and Bentli.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, in 2011; two daughters, Sandra (Brady) Dietlin, in 2010, and Karen (Brady) Comer, in 1998; one son, James Alfred Brady, Jr., in 1982; and his two brothers and two sisters.

There will be no services. Interment will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron. His ashes will be buried with this wife�s. Sandra Kay Dietlin, age 59, of Grove City, went home to be with the Lord October 20, 2010 surrounded by her family, after a 3 year battle with ALS.

Sandy was a member of Benfield Christian Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher and was an employee of Big Lots.

She was preceded in death by her brother James Brady and sister Karen Comer.

Phyllis L. Johnston, 68, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007, in the company of close family at her home following a long battle with cancer.

A celebration of her life will be at 11 a.m. EDT Monday at Pisgah United Methodist Church of Tallahassee. Family will receive friends immediately following the service, in Robert's Hall. Harvey-Young Funeral Home (850-926-3333) is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308-5428. They will be greatly appreciated.

Phyllis made Tallahassee her home beginning in 1974. An accomplished woman, her dynamic life included being a police dispatcher, bookkeeper, trusted companion, loyal member of Pisgah United Methodist Church and most importantly, a faithful wife, mother, sister and friend. She will be missed by many.

She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Gaylord A. "Tony" Johnston; her sister, Janet Kersey (and husband Bud), her daughters, Jamie Lashus of Crawfordville and Tara Perrin (and husband Richard) of Franklin, Tenn.; her grandson, Scott Lashus of Tallahassee; and many nieces and nephews around the United States.

DIED � MARCH 27, 2005 ** BURTON R. PHILLIPS SR., 89, of Kenova, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. He is survived by three daughters, Dianna J. Martony, Beverly J. Bleigh, and Garnet Byrne; four sons, Daniel H. Phillips, Harold F. Phillips, Rev. William Boblett, and Randall Boblett. Burial held March 31, 2005 at Phillips Family Cemetery, Elkins.

I do question if Burton, Sr was the birth father of Charles, since Charles was born in 1930. Which means that Burton, Sr was 14 years old when Charles was conceived. Bernice was 15 years old. Not impossible.

I do not question that Bernice was the mother. The death certificate for Charles clearly says she was his mother. However, the father is given as Briton W Phillips. A misspelling of Burton? Highly probable. I could not find anyone with the name Briton/Britton Phillips in this area in 1930. However, Burton may have just been Charles' adoptive father, adopting him when he married Bernice.

If Harrison Co., WV has available birth records (not online yet) this may clarify who the father was, if given. Since this was an out-of-wedlock birth, the father's name may not have been given or known.

Based on some of the yearbook photos for the children below, some do bear a resemblance to Burton Revely Phillips, Jr. Most children were conceived out-of-wedlock of the mothers, so it is hard to tell.

Shirley married David Watson Worrell. It appears that he adopted Shirley's children with Burton, except for her first daughter Debra who's maiden name stayed Spencer. She is the only one that does not resemble Burton in her high school yearbook photo. Therefore, there is a chance that Burton was not her father.

Father was Daniel according to mother's letter. In the 1920 Census Dianna reports that she is a widow. The Census was taken on Jan 20, 1920. So either Daniel was still alive and was with Dianna in March of 1920 or Clayton's father is not Daniel. On marriage license, Clayton lists his father as Joseph. Which could just mean that Joseph was the man who raised him and was basically his father. It is doubtful that Joseph fathered Clayton and then waited 5 years to marry his mother. Therefore, biological father is still in question.

Funeral services for Ellnora �Ellie� Williams, 77, of New Llano, Louisiana will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at Labby Memorial Funeral Home with Rev. D.R. Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m., Monday, December 03, 2012, and on Tuesday, December 4th from 8:00 a.m. until time of service at funeral home.

Ellie, the daughter of Jessie Albert and Ina Love [stet] Rowan Kittle was born February 14, 1935, in, West Virginia. She passed away Friday, November 30, 2012, in Leesville, LA.

Mrs. Williams was a member of the VFW Women�s Auxiliary and Retired American Legion Women�s Auxiliary. She loved her bingo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Harold Kenneth Keller and sister, Grace.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, SFC Walter �Kirk� Williams (RET US Army) of New Llano, LA; sons, Ken Keller of New Llano, LA and Bill Keller of New Llano, LA; daughters, Dewannia Kelly & husband, Tom of Colorado Springs, CO, Diana Keller of New Llano, LA and Sheila Keller of Colorado Springs, CO; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Dr. Saikahli, Dr. Matthew, and Dr. Ghanta, all the nurses from Byrd Hospital ICU Wing as well as all nurses and CNAs from both floors for their outstanding care for our mother during her illness. We would also like to thank the entire staff at Rosepine Retirement and Rehab Center, with a special thank you to her nurses and CNA�s, Courtney, Brian, Stacie, Brenda, April, Brittney, Tonya, Andrew, Beau, Jackie, Kim and anyone that may have been missed.

Lena B. Rowan, 75, of 68 Country Drive, Leola, died Friday at Lancaster General Hospital after a long illness. The widow of Otis H. Rowan, who died in 1972, she had resided in the Lancaster area for the past 10 years. Previously she made her home in Buckhannon, W.Va.

Born in Buckhannon, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Kettle.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Lee Rowan, Buckhannon, W.Va., William Rowan, Chicago, Ill; and Larry H. Rowan, Lancaster; four daughters: June, wife of Oscar Tharp, Lancaster; Louise, wife of Walter Hekinson, Belpre, Ohio; Ruth, wife of Robert Bachman, Buckhannon, W.Va.; and Rubey, wife of Harry Lambert, Clarksburg, W.Va.; 22 Grandchildren; 23 great-grandchilden; and a brother, Jesse Kettle, Buckhannon, W.Va.

CLARKSBURG � Thelma Ruth Tenney, age 52, of Clarksburg, W.Va., passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2014, at the United Hospital Center in Bridgeport.

She was born on August 8, 1961, in Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Harry L. Lambert Sr. and Ruby Rowan Lambert, who survives of Clarksburg.

In addition to her mother, Thelma is survived by her companion, Richard L. Riffle of Clarksburg; two daughters, Cassandra and Sierra Wolfe of Terra Alta; one son, Elisha �JR� Tenney of Clarksburg; one brother, Harry L. Lambert Jr. �Butchie� of Lancaster, PA; two uncles, Wayne Goodwin of Upshur County and Donnie Davis of Clarksburg; one aunt, Ruth Baughman of Clarksburg; special son, Sammy Todd of Clarksburg; and a cousin, Shelia Kay Baughman of Clarksburg.

Mrs. Pauline Riggleman, age 81 years, a resident of 515 Davis St., Elkins, passed away at 11:03 AM Wednesday, April 27, 2005 in the Davis Memorial Hospital.

She was born October 7, 1923 at Mabie a daughter of the late Harry and Vernie Johnson Scott. On December 12, 1942 she was married to Robert L. Riggleman who preceded her in death in January 2002.

Surviving are a son, Lynn Riggleman of Elkins. Two daughters, Katherine Arbaugh of Dailey and Paula Epply of Elkins. Six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mrs. Riggleman attended the schools of Randolph County and was a Homemaker.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, April 30, 2005 at the Elkins Memorial Gardens. Rev. Stella Faye Moyer will officiate and interment will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Hospice, 1410 Crim Ave., Belington, WV 26250 in memory of Mrs. Riggleman. The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Mrs. Pauline Riggleman.

Jennifer Lynn Coberly, 53, a resident of Elkins, passed from this life Monday, October 12, 2015 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. She had been in her usual health and death was unexpected.

Jennifer was born Friday, December 8, 1961 in Elkins, a daughter of the late Harry Scott and Ruth Ann Price Scott.

Left to cherish her memory are two children, Tommy Scott and companion Kim and Charles Ray Coberly Jr., one sister, Diana Isner and husband R.D., all of Elkins,

five grandchildren, Nathan, Drayon, Dyllan, Raylynn and Waylynn, nieces and nephews, Tiffany, Kelly, Bobby, Rick, Burley, Brian, Robin, Dustin, Adam, Adeama, Chelsey and Robbie and two special friends, Missy Rohr and Diana Hedrick.

Preceding her in death besides her parents was one brother, Eugene Edward Scott.

Jennifer attended the schools of Randolph County and obtained her GED. Jennifer enjoyed camping and spoiling her cats, Rocky and Cuddles. Jennifer�s request for cremation will be honored.

In the Census records, only Virginia appears in both 1930 and 1940. I searched all death records from 1918 to 1969 for Marteney, finding no children belonging to this couple. I thought about possible step-siblings when Bertha married Dee, but he had only one son Wilbert, with first wife Cleo. Bertha's Will only mentions Virginia.

Unless these children were miscarriages that Bertha had, they do not exist.

Virginia Lee Spanitz, 84, a resident of Cole Avenue, Elkins, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday evening at her home.

She was born Oct. 16, 1930 [stet], at Mill Creek, a daughter of the late Burns Leonard Marteney and Bertha Scott Marteney.

In 1943 [stet], she was married to Martin Matthew Spanitz, who survives. Also surviving is one son, Charles M. Spanitz, and wife, Vonda M., of Elkins.

She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

She was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School. She was a homemaker, a member of American Legion Post 29 Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the Randolph County Senior Center and a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at the Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Fred Bird and the Rev. John Sarraga officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain State Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either Mountain Hospice, 1410 Crim Ave., Belington, W.Va. 26250 or Randolph County Senior Center, Fifth Street and Railroad Avenue, Elkins, W.Va. 26241. The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Virginia Lee Spanitz. From 21 Jan 2005.

1910 - Census - Appears with family without a name in this census. Age given 2 months which means child was born in either Feb or Mar. Census taker visited on Apr 26, 1910. Not sure but I think they rounded up. Which means the child was born in March 1910.

1916 - A Caroline Scott in Mabie, Randolph Co., WV, age 5 dies of pneumonia on Jan 30, 2016. No parents' names are given, only the undertaker.

1915 - While looking at 1915 death records I happened upon a death record for a Caroline Scott who died on Jan 29, 1915 in Mabie, Randolph Co., WV of pneumonia. Age given was 5 years, 10 months, and 14 days. Death was reported by the doctor. No parent's names were given. And for some reason, the WV Culture Site, where I got the images, does NOT have this Caroline Scott death indexed in 1915. There is however a Caroline Scott indexed in 1916.

Next I questioned whether this was the same Caroline. The fact that the 1915 record did not have Caroline indexed but the other two Scott's on this page were indexed, was a clue. The next were the similarities. Both named Caroline, both in Mabie, both from pneumonia, both 5 years old.

The next thing I checked was the 1910 Census. How many children with the last name of Scott, born in WV around 1910, and lived in Randolph County, WV? There were only about 6. None of them were named Caroline.

So the the odds that there are two Caroline Scott, age 5 living in Mabie, WV, dying almost exactly one year apart of pneumonia, is very slim.

This is what I think happened......Caroline died on Jan 29, 1916. Death was reported by attending doctor which means the parents were there when she died to give the date of birth to doctor. Somehow this record ended up on the 1915 record which means the recorder or the doctor made the mistake. When the death records were indexed there must have been some other notes that told the indexer that this death was in 1916, not 1915. The undertaker comes to pick-up the body the next day, on Jan 30, 1916. The undertaken was just given her year age of 5 and reports the day he picked up the body.

How do I know that this Caroline, was in fact the daughter of Elizabeth and Charles which appeared in the 1910 Census? I don't. I am not 100% sure. The only way to know 100% is to access the doctor's (A C Blair) records if they still exist, to see if he gives the parents' names.
