Marriages and Children
Edmond
Dismuke / Dismukes

1805 - btwn 1873-1875

About the last name of Dismuke or Dismukes.  The use of the "s" at the end of the name can be considered correct.  The omission of the "s" could also be considered correct.

If you are doing research, use both variations of the name in your search.  Documents found, may use both variations of the name within the same branch of the family.  Even in cemeteries, the same family will use both spellings.  Instead of fighting over which spelling is correct, just accept that both spellings are correct unless you have original source documentation that can track the specific usage of either spelling over a period of time.

Children Birth Death Notes
Thomas Jefferson Dismuke May 24, 1829?, GA before 1880, Glenville, Russell Co., AL ? Married Nancy Emiline Hause (b. ca 1835 -1836, AL, daughter of Barnett Hause and Jane--?;  d. September 15, 1888, Barbour Co., AL.  Buried at Ramah Church Cemetery, Midway, Barbour Co., AL )  17 Mar 1853, Macon Co., Alabama
Regarding the first wife of Edmond 1805 and son Thomas Jefferson Dismuke (1829 - bef 1880)

In a few family trees for the Dismuke(s) families, Thomas Jefferson Dismuke was the only child of Edmond during his first marriage to Polly Langston.  Polly Langston supposedly died in 1829.  The birth date for Thomas Jefferson Dismuke is given as May 24, 1829.  However, Edmond Dismuke married his second wife, Margaret Williams on Feb 19, 1829, Pike Co., GA.

Could the birth year for Thomas be actually 1828??    Did Polly die in 1828, not 1829?

Of note:  Some family trees list Polly Langston as Mary Polly Langston.

The marriage license for Edmond Dismuke and second wife Margaret Williams is found in the marriage book for Pike Co., GA.  However, I can find no marriage record for Edmond Dismuke with Polly Langston in GA.  I searched all counties in GA between the years 1825 - 1829. (Yes, ALL of them!)  I looked for all Dismuke(s) and all Langston in the records.

Where is the proof of the marriage of Edmond Dismuke and Polly Langston??

You may also try searching all of the marriage records in Georgia at this website:  If YOU find it, please let me know where.

1)  In the bottom left of the page, select the county you want and then click "search".
2)  Then select the Marriage Book" you want from the list
3)  Look first at the Index for the book.
4)  If you find the name you want, note the page number given.
5)  Then go to that page for the marriage license.

There are two books where this marriage information originated from.... They are:

-- Frankie Dismukes Wilson, "The Dismukes family and related families"
-- Bernice Dismukes, "The Dismukes and their kin".

Neither book provides any source documentation for the marriage of Edmond Dismuke with Polly Langston.  There is also no documentation regarding where the birth date for Thomas came from.   There are errors in both of these books.  Unfortunately, these errors have been copied over and over again by family tree makers on ancestry.com and familysearch.org.  There are also instances where the Edmonds in this family are mixed-up.

Marriage 2 Birth Death Notes
Margaret Williams   1850, AL Married Feb 19, 1829, Pike Co., GA
In some family trees online, and in Frankie Dismuke's book, all the children that Edmond and Margaret Williams possibly had are listed below.  However, I believe that some of these children were never theirs.  There is very little documentation. The children might have existed and died as infants but unless someone can come up with where this information originally came from, then it is probably someone in the past mixing up one of the many Edmond Dismukes that have appeared during this era.

The children that I have been able to track, are in bold print below.   Those shown in gray were the children listed as Edmond b. 1805 in the book by Frankie Dismukes Wilson.

Lucinda is the only child of Edmond and Margaret that shows up with him in the 1860 US Census.  The most important census would be the 1850 Census, where sadly, this family cannot be found.  If someone has found this family in the 1850 US Census (Not Alabama Census) please contact me.

Marriage 3 Birth Death Notes
Frances C Tate Williams ca 1818, GA 1862, Macon Co., AL  Married Oct 24, 1850, Macon Co., AL
Edmond's third wife Frances was married previously to Aaron Williams, Jr (m. Jan 23, 1840, Harris Co., GA) who died in Nov 1849 and they had the following children that were mentioned in his will: William T Williams, Avington B Williams, David S Williams, Boling W Williams, Virginia F Williams, James T Williams, Sarah F Williams, Jephta F Williams.

Edmond Dismukes was the executor of Aaron Williams' will which can be viewed on Ancestry.com.  Some of the children show up on the 1860 census record with the last name Dismuke, however, they were not Edmond's birth children.  They were Avington, James, Sarah, and Jeptha.  Avington took the last name of Dismukes.

Also of note:  Some family trees list Avington and Lucinda (dau of Edmond and Margaret) as twins.  If Lucinda was Avington's twin, then Lucinda would have been mentioned as a child of Aaron Williams in his will.  Lucinda' mother is Margaret Williams.  Avington's mother is Frances C Tate Williams.

Eveline Dismuke ca 1855, AL   In 1860, 1870 Census with father.  After 1870, cannot be found.  Not enough information.  Suspect she got married or passed away before 1880.  If she got married, it would have been in AL or AR if she followed step-mother Mary there.
Joseph Dismuke ca 1859, AL bef 1870 The 1860 Census is the only census Joseph shows up on.

Marriage 4 Birth Death Notes
Mary Franklin Hardie (Hardy, Hardee) nee Langford ca 1840, GA 1898, AR m.1 Robert Hardie (Hardee, Hardy) Sep 3, 1858, Harris Co., GA

m2. Edmond Dismuke under name of Mary F Hardy, June 18, 1864, Macon Co., AL.

m3. Under name Mary F Dismuke, C L Bacchus (b. ca 1825), Jul 12, 1885, Hagarville, Johnson Co., AR
Mary was first married to Robert Hardie (Hardee) Sep 3, 1858, Harris Co., GA.  Son Robert, who appears in 1870 Census, was the son of Robert Hardie not Edmond.  The marriage license for first husband Robert Hardie is found under the last name Hardee.

For the marriage license between Edmond and and Mary F, Mary F's last name is spelled "Hardy", not Hardie.  Also, the marriage year is listed as 1863.  When you look at the actual certificate, it says 1864.  (See below)

1840 - Census record for Edmond Dismuke in Chambers, AL has more adults than his family should have after only 11 years of marriage.  There was probably another adult sibling or other family members living with him.  Perhaps his brother Jeptha who appears near him in later years.  Note the category of person employed in agriculture as 3.  This would mean that there were three males working the farm.  Edmond and two other males.  Eldest son Thomas would have only been 11 at the time.

1850 - Marries Frances C Williams (nee Tate), Oct 24, 1850, Macon Co., AL  widow of Aaron Williams
1850 - This group of the Dismuke family cannot be found in the 1850 US Census.  I have spent days going through the 1850 Census looking for this family.  I have looked through the actual sheets for Macon Co., AL.  I have also done searches looking for each individual child of Edmond and his new wife, Frances'  For instance, I would look at all children with the name of Jul*  (for variations of Julia), in the states of Georgia and Alabama.
1850 - Edmund is found in the 1850 Alabama State Census for Macon County.   The Alabama Census might probably have a combination of Edmonds children with late wife Margaret and Frances C's children with late husband Aaron Williams.  However on this census sheet under Edmond, there is no female listed over 21 years.  Which means this census recorded only his immediate family at the time.

On the same census sheet, there is a Fanny Williams listed as a head of household with 8 children under 21.  BUT, it was recorded as 4 boys and 4 girls.  Frances C Williams had 6 boys and 2 girls.
