Marriages and Children
Eleanor "Ellen" Dismuke
1831 - 1859

About the last name of Dismuke or Dismukes.  The use of the "s" at the end of the name can be considered correct.  The omission of the "s" could also be considered correct.

If you are doing research, use both variations of the name in your search.  Documents found, may use both variations of the name within the same branch of the family.  Even in cemeteries, the same family will use both spellings.  Instead of fighting over which spelling is correct, just accept that both spellings are correct unless you have original source documentation that can track the specific usage of either spelling over a period of time.

1850 - Eleanor marries Lennier Everett Stewart - May 30, 1850, Macon Co., AL.

In the marriage index "Alabama, Select Marriages, 1816-1942" on ancestry, this marriage is listed under Elenor Dismersh and Simeon Staurt.  The "L" that was used for Lennier was probably the handwriting style where the capital L looks very similar to the capital S. Thus, the index was transcribed incorrectly.

In the marriage index "Alabama, Marriage Index, 1800-1869", on ancestry, this marriage is indexed under Elenora Dismukes and Simon Stewart.

The typed marriage index, "Alabama, Marriage Indexes, 1814-1935" also has Elenora Dismukes and Simon Stewart.  This index was typed up after transcribing the handwritten marriage records of Josiah Sanford. Or is it Lanford;)?

1850 - Census - Eleanor and Lennier, who were living in Macon Co., AL during this census are not found.  Neither are the rest of the Dismuke clan.  I have made exhaustive searches through Macon Co comparing the names with the 1850 Alabama Census and there are large chunks of people missing from the 1850 US Census in Macon Co., AL
1850 - Alabama Census - L E Stewart is living in Macon Co., AL.  Newly married, their household consists of only two inhabitants.

Eleanor's grave marker is wonderful.  It provide her birth date and birth location.  Her husband's initial are clearly shown as "L E" along with marriage date, confirmed in the marriage indexes mentioned above.
The Children of Eleanor "Ellen" Dismuke and Lennier Everett Stewart
In order to figure out and understand who the children of Eleanor and Lennier are, you have to go back further to determine who the possible parents of Lennier are.

There is not one family tree on ancestry.com, familysearch.org, or any random websites that provide the parents of Lennier.  This is because there is just too little in the way of documentation to easily piece it together.

Two of the children of Eleanor and Lennier first show up with Lennier (Linn Stewart) in the 1870 Census in Talladega Co. AL,  They are Margaret and Alexander.  When I found this census sheet,  I wanted to know where the two children were in 1860.  Searching all 1860 Census records in Alabama, I looked for a Margaret and Alexander Stewart living together.  I found them living in the household of John W and Lavina Stewart in Talladega Co., AL with an additional sibling, Rob Roy.

What caught my attention about the family of John W and Lavina Stewart was that these are the parents of John W Stewart, Jr who married Eleanor's younger sister Bethania Elizabeth Dismuke.  After researching every child of Edmond Dismuke b. 1805, I have discovered that it was not uncommon for a couple of siblings to marry a couple of siblings from another family.

This led me to look closer at the family of John W and Lavina Stewart.  After looking through various family trees for this family, I discovered a couple of errors real quick.

1)  All family trees assumed that the oldest child of John W Stewart and Lavina Smith was John W Stewart, Jr who married Bethania Dismuke.  If this was the case, Lavina did not have her first child until she was around 28 years old.  Highly unusual in this era.

2)  All family trees assumed that the three younger children living with John W Stewart and Lavina in the 1860 Census, were their children.  These children being Rob Roy, Margaret, and Alexander.

All of this led me to ask myself..... Why on earth would John W Stewart and Lavina take on three younger children unless they were related to them in one way or another.  Which led me to another question....How many children did John W Stewart and Lavina have before John W Stewart, Jr was born around 1830?  Lennier was born around 1826.  What if Lennier was one of John W Stewart and Lavina's older children?

I needed to go back to 1840 and look at the Census information for John W Stewart in Talladega, AL.  I found it indexed under "Stwart".  After putting the information into a table (see below) I compared the data with the names that appear in the family in the 1850 Census.

As you can see in the 1840 Census above. John W and Lavina have eight children living with them.  There were two boys between the age of 10-14.  Which would make them 20-24 in the 1850 Census.  One of the boys was John W Stewart, Jr.  I believe the other boy was Lennier.

In regards to the plausibility of the three children; Roby Roy, Margaret, and Alexander, being the children of John W Stewart and Lavina.  One has to remember the period of time.  Not many woman had a lot of babies after the age of 50 in the mid 1800's.  Unlike today, there were no fertility treatments.  The last child Lavina gave birth to was Lavina E Stewart, who was born around 1844.  Lavina was around 42 years old when she gave birth to her daughter Lavina E.  It is highly unlikely that she would have had three more children after an eight years hiatus at the age of 50, 51, and 55.

Therefore, the three youngest children living with John W And Lavina Stewart in the 1860 Census ARE NOT their children, but their grandchildren.  They are the children of Eleanor Dismuke and their eldest son Lennier.

- Lennier marries America Shank, Jan 8, 1867, Macon Co., AL.

1870 - Census - Lennier is back in Macon Co., AL with his new wife America.  The two younger children are living with him.

However, when you look at the census for the John W Stewart family in Talladega (John W, Sr died in 1867, So family head was son Archibald), Robert and Margaret are living there.

On the 1870 census sheet (under Archibald Stewart) one discovers that there is something mentally wrong with Margaret and Joel (son of John W and Lavina).  "Insane" is written in their rows on the sheet.  Which means for Margaret in this time period, she was probably bounced back and forth to whoever had the time to take care of her.  Which is why she appears with her father and also with her grandparents.  On the Census sheet with her father however, there is no "insane" notation.

- Census - I was able to find America Stewart, now a widow, living with her brother George F Shank in Justice Precinct 7, Smith Co., TX.  She dies and is buried in Smith Co., TX, Jan 30, 1905.

This means Lennier died between 1870 - 1900.  I am unable to narrow this down any further.

Son Alexander is living alone in Roane, Lafayette Co., AR.  Of note, this is the same area that uncles Charles S Stewart and Thomas Jefferson Stewart (sons of John Ward Stewart, Jr and Bethania Dismuke) also settle to.  In fact, they are all buried in the same cemetery in Bradley, AR.

Daughter Margaret, under the name Minta, is being taken care of by her first cousin Barbara Elizabeth Stewart Muldrow (dau of John Ward Stewart, Jr and Bethania Dismuke) in Milam Co., TX
