Caroline
Dismuke
1833 - (1866 -1868) |
|
|
|
|
About the last name of Dismuke or Dismukes. The use of the "s" at the
end of the name can be considered correct. The omission of the "s"
could also be considered correct.
If you are doing research, use both variations of the name in your search.
Documents found, may use both variations of the name within the same branch
of the family. Even in cemeteries, the same family will use both
spellings. Instead of fighting over which spelling is correct, just
accept that both spellings are correct unless you have original source
documentation that can track the specific usage of either spelling over a
period of time. |

1866 - 1868
- Caroline Dismuke passes away between 1866 and 1868.
About 1868, Florence Lafayette Clyatt marries Nancy Haley.
In the 1866 Alabama Census, there is one female over 20 in
the household of F L Clyatt. This would not be Nancy,
Florence's second wife, because she was only 17 in 1866.
Therefore, this female would be Caroline still living at the
time of this census.
According to the 1900 Census, Nancy reports that she has
been married for 32 years. This would place her
marriage date at about 1868.
|
| |
1870 -
Census - Florence appears in census with new wife Nancy. The four
children listed are Caroline Dismuke's children. |

The
known children of Florence Lafayette Clyatt
and Nancy Haley were:
Annette Clyatt Davis | Thomas Tilden Clyatt | Roscoe
Conklin Clyatt | James Ford Clyatt
|
| |
1910 -
Census - Widow Nancy is living with son Thomas. Under number of
children she lists 8 with 3 living. This would not include the
children that were Caroline's because three of them are also still
alive. Therefore, there were four other children she gave birth to
between 1880 - 1900 that died before 1900. Her children that are
still alive in 1910 are Annette, Thomas, and James. Roscoe died in
1907.

I assume Mamie passes away before William marries
Mattie Hawkins. Both of Mamie's parents pass away in the same
location and are buried at the Gillette Cemetery. There were
no known children from this union. |

1900
- Census - William is living in Florida, however the three children
he had with second wife Mattie Hawkins are not with him.
I found daughter Florence living with William's brother Franklin in
Alachua Co., FL. (See this census below under Franklin Howard
Clyatt) However, I could not find the other two children.
Most likely with a different relative The children do reappear
together in
the 1910 Census along with William's third wife Mary. |

- In a 1915 petition for the division of land, formally held by the
father, after the death of Nancy..... There is no mention
of Sarah being alive. The only six children mention in the
petition are F H (deceased, wife Mayme and sons), J L, J F, T T, W
C, and Annette Davis. The petitioner of the court papers,
James Ford Clyatt, testified that, "...his father, F. L. Clyatt,
died some years ago, a resident of Macon County, Alabama, leaving a
wife Mrs. Nancy Clyatt, and six children...."
Two additional neighbors testified stating, that at the time of
Florence Clyatt's death, there were only 6 children living.
Sarah was not one of the children. |

Grady Garrett Clyatt and
Ruby Jimma Kirby |
| |
Grady's first and
middle names may actually be reversed. In Franklin Howard
Clyatt's will, he lists his son's name as G. Grady Clyatt.
In the death Florida Death Index, his name is listed as Garrett
G Clyatt. This is the only time the name Garrett appears.
On all other documents, only the name of Grady is used. |

Jimma's first name is Ruby. The name Ruby only
appears in the 1900 Census when her mother Ethel E Kirby
is living with Wynne family as the widow sister-in-law.
Mary M Wynne was James J Kirby's sister. Then again in
the 1910 census after her mother married Herbert H
Pinkoson she is listed as the step-daughter. |

Joseph Lafayette Clyatt |
| |
Joseph, after the
1910 Census with his parents, jumps around the country. He
did serve in WWI. According to some family trees, there
were several marriages and a couple of children. I have
tried to look up the Alabama marriage dates in marriage indexes
without success. Some of these indexes are incomplete
which is why I am unable to locate and verify the marriages.
I have listed them in the chronology below.
Also, "Jr" starts to appear on the end of Joseph's name around
1930's and is on his grave marker. Not sure why this is
because his father's first name was John and Joseph was not
technically a "Jr" Perhaps the father just called him
Junior as a nickname and somehow it was attached to his name. |
| |
? 1913
- Marries Mattie Marie Grigg, Aug 10, 1913, Macon Co., AL
(unable to verify at this time)
One child from this marriage is given as
John Leo Clyatt - b. Jul 26,
1914
There are no census records which place Mattie Marie and Joseph
together. In the 1920 Census for Mattie Marie, which was
difficult to find because her mother's and her last name are
listed as Bedella instead of Grigg, Mattie Marie's son is
found with them under the name Cloyett, Leo age 5 living in Lee
Co., AL. In the 1930 Census, Mattie Marie under the name
Marie Clyatt is living with her son Leo and sister Josie Grigg
in Lee Co., AL. She lists her marital status as widowed. |

- Census - Unable to locate Joseph in this census. |
| |
? 1923
- Marries Mamie Eva Barnsfield, Sep 30, 1922, Birmingham,
Jefferson Co, AL (unable to verify at this time)
Two children from this marriage. One male child which died
as an infant and Virginia Adeline Clyatt - b. Jun 7, 1923
As with first wife Mattie Marie Griggs, Mamie never appears with
Joseph in the Census. In the 1930 Census Mamie and
daughter Virginia are living with her family. |
| |
1927 -
Marries Inez--? based on the 1930
Census |
| |
1930
- Census - Joseph is living in Florida with another wife.
Of note is the "Age of first marriage" column. Under
Joseph, the age of 20 is given. This would make the year
of his first marriage 1913/1914 which coincides with the Grigg
marriage in 1913. |
