  About Charles middle initial

It is "S".  Not L.  Not W (grave marker).  The handwriting of the 1800's and early 1900's had S's that looked like L's.  Therefore, the S was sometimes transcribed as L.  About the time of his death, the W appeared as Charles' middle initial.  Someone in the family got it wrong when he died and the mistake has been repeated since then.

The middle initial of S is clearly seen on the grave markers for both his wife Sarah and son Leland where is says the wife and son of C S Parsons.  Note also the 1900 and 1910 Census.

With that said, it is unknown what the S was the initial of.

Of note on the obituary.  There is no mention of Charles' daughter Eveleen, that was born while he was married to Olive.  On the death certificate Charles' marital status is given as "Divorced"  The information on the death certificate was provided by his daughter Hester Repair.  Therefore, she knew about the marriage to Olive and the divorce or she would have reported that her father was a widower.  Hester's obituary acknowledges she has a half-sister named "Mrs. Joseph Hill"

  1900 - Census - Widow Mollie is now living with her parents with daughter Marie.  The Census was taken in June of 1900 so she was still carrying her son Calvin who was born in September.
 
  1910 - Census - Widow Mollie is still living with her parents with both of her children.  There is also a Charles Parsons age 5 on this Census that was listed as a grandson in this home.  However, this could NOT be Leland's child.  This could be a grandchild but not a Parsons.  The Census taker probably just made an assumption and put the last name Parsons there. OR Mollie married another Parsons and that person died before 1910 making her a widow again.  However I can find no marriage record for this scenario.

Comments: Sergeant Wotring was a member of the 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded by the enemy in South Korea on September 7, 1950 and returned to duty on September 26, 1950. He was listed as Missing in Action while fighting the enemy near Kunu-ri, North Korea on November 26, 1950. He was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. Jacqueline Mahoney, his niece, remembers him as "Uncle Gerry." Reported DOD last known home of record - Bayard, West Virginia.

Eleanor Sue Townsend, 71, of Charles Town, WV, passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at Shenandoah Health Village Center.

She was born January 30, 1938 at Davis, WV and was the daughter of the late Melvin E. Wotring and Gay Wotring Wotring.

She was retired from Jefferson Memorial Hospital at Ranson, WV.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Delbert R. Townsend Sr. at home; one daughter, Jacqueline Mahoney of Charles Town; one son, Delbert R. Townsend Jr. and wife, Nancye of Salt Lake City, UT; two sisters, Shirley Crush and husband, Harvey of Oakland, MD and Linda Houser of OH; five grandchildren, Christopher Mahoney of Charles Town, Carrie Mahoney Pike and husband, Scott of Greencove Springs, FL, Stacey Smarowsky and husband, Joe of Bankok, Thailand, Meg Townsend and Joey Townsend both of LaPlata, MD; six great grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Esther Lee Cosner of Baltimore, MD and Betty Kitzmiller of Gorman, MD.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gerald and Norman Wotring.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2009, with visitation one hour prior to the service, at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, US 340 at Halltown Road, Charles Town/Harpers Ferry, WV, with the Rev. Douglas Fraim officiating.

Last night at 11:14, police and EMS were called to 415 Fourth Street in the Eastport section of Annapolis for a double stabbing.

From the police release:

On September 29, 2010 at 11:14 p.m. Annapolis police officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Fourth Street for a stabbing. Officers located two males suffering from wounds to their upper torso. One male was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma and the other was pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness reported the victims were in the house and for an unknown reason began to wrestle on the floor. The preliminary investigation reveals each victim was stabbed by the other. The motive is still under investigation.

The deceased subject is identified as 54 year old Delbert Ray Townsend, Jr. of Saint Leonard, Maryland. The surviving victim is identified as 35 year old Charles Heyleck, IV, of Annapolis. Mr. Heyleck is listed is stable condition and is expected to survive.

No charges have been filed against Mr. Heyleck as this case is still under investigation.

Mr. Townsend was a Retired School Administrator with the Charles County Board of Education serving as an Educator for 32 years. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church - Chapel Point. He played and coached tennis and was a wrestler in high school. He most enjoyed being with his family.

He was the son of Delbert Ray Townsend, Sr. and the late Eleanor Sue Wotring.

He was predeceased by his mother.

He is survived by his father; one son, Joseph Townsend of Waldorf, MD; two daughters, Stacie (Joseph) Smarowsky of Woodstock, MD, and Jennifer Margaret “Meg” Townsend of Dunkirk, MD; and one sister, Jacqueline Mahoney of Charleston,
WV. Also survived by three grandchildren, Lauren, Lindsay, and Noah.

A Visitation will take place on Friday, October 8, 2010 from 5-8pm at Raymond Funeral Chapel, La Plata, MD

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 8, 2010 at 7pm at Raymond Funeral Chapel, La Plata, MD

Interment will be at a later date at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, MD

Honorary Pallbearers will be the United States Air Force Honor Guard.

Linda Marie Hauser (Wotring) passed away early Sunday morning after battling cancer for over 20 years. Linda may have been small in stature, but she was the fiercest warrior in her battle against cancer.

Awaiting her in heaven with open arms are her parents; Melvin and Gaye Wotring, siblings; Jerry and Norman Wotring, and Sue Townsend. Linda was a wonderful mother and has left behind a family that will forever miss her.

Her children; Raymond K (Cheri) Hauser Jr, Michael (Sue) Hauser, Diana (Christopher) Moldas, Annette Neumeyer, Kevin (Christina) Hauser, 13 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren.

Linda was also a beloved friend and will be missed by all of her dear friends. Especially Marlene Henderly, with whom she shared over 50 years of friendship. Linda was forever putting her loved one’s needs before her own, and never thought twice about sacrificing herself. Mom, you are no longer in pain, and you have taught us all well. Now is your time to fly. Go be with Jesus and let him take care of you, as you have always taken care of us.

Gary James Gillespie, 27, passed away May 5, 2019. Born in Medina, he lived most of his life in Wayne county Ohio. He is a 2010 graduate of Norwayne High School and received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Akron University with a focus in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

Gary’s internship was with Fastenal, where he went on to work after graduation in a management position in Logistics.
As a youth, Gary was active in many sports including football, baseball, wrestling and swim team. He was a fitness enthusiast & loved the outdoors. His lifelong passion, however, was playing the guitar and studying religion. He was a Christian who loved the Lord.

All who was blessed to know Gary, loved him. He exuded kindness to everyone he met and had an incredible ability to make you laugh with his wonderful, loving sense of humor. He made this world a better place.

Gary is survived by his parents, Diana (Christopher) Moldas of Mogadore, Keith (Dacia) Gillespie of Loudonville; sister, Taylor Gillespie of Mogadore; the love of his life, Kayla Krukemeyer of Brecksville; grandmother, Betty Gillespie of Toledo and many aunts and uncles who loved him dearly.

CARIBOU - Darlene L. Brennan, 65, passed away Friday, June 6, 2008, at a Caribou hospital.

She was born Aug. 6, 1942, in Thomas, W.Va., the daughter of the late James and Lillian (Watring) Nutter. Darlene served in the U.S. military and then as a civilian worked as a travel agent.

She is survived by a daughter, Robbin Persing and her husband, Henry L. Persing, of Madison, Ala.; as well as a grandson, Brennan Persing.

MRS. NATHAN REPAIR - PARSONS - Mrs. Esther Parsons Repair. 70, wife of Nathan E. Repair, of here, died Tuesday at the home of her daughter. Mrs. Thomas Parsons, Bridgeport. She had been in ill health several months.

A native of Tucker County she was a daughter of the late Charles W. and Sarah Miller Parsons. She was a past president and charter member of the Holly Meadow Farm Women’s Club and a member of Parsons Presbyterian Church,

Besides her husband and daughter she is survived by a son. Harold N. Repair. Somerville, N. J.; a brother, Calvin J. Parsons, Salisbury, Par.; a half-sister, Mrs. Joseph Hill, Parsons, and two grandchildren.

Services will be conducted today at 2:30 p. m. at the Greenlief Funeral Home by Rev. James F. Hubbard, pastor Parsons Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Parsons Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home.

Harold Nathan "Nate" Repair, 84, of Rockbridge County, Va., died Thursday (Sept. 4, 2008).

He was born Aug. 24, 1924, in Parsons, W.Va., a son of the late Nathan E. Repair and Hester Parsons Repair.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Hilda Repair and Velma Parsons; and a brother, Paul.

Mr. Repair was a graduate of Parsons High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Berea College and a master's degree from West Virginia University.  He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific Theater during World War II.  He married Cecilia Stalnaker in 1947. He worked for Rutgers Cooperative Extension Service as an agricultural extension agent in Somerset County for 35 years.  Nate retired in 1986 from Rutgers Cooperative Extension as professor emeritus from Rutgers University. He was operating an agricultural consulting business up to the time of his death.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Cecilia; a son, Jonathan Repair and wife, Judy Carkhuff of Rockbridge County, Va.; a daughter, Janelle Callaway and husband, Scott, of Virginia Beach, Va.; grandchildren, Capt. Kelly Repair, USMC, Kate Duke and husband, Adam, Donald Repair, Zachary Callaway, Sarah Callaway; and niece, Sally Parsons.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at Lexington Presbyterian Church with Dr. William Klein officiating. Burial will be in Parsons City Cemetery, Parsons, W.Va. at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8. Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, Va.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Parsons High School Alumni Association, Parsons, WV 26287; Berea College, Berea, KY 40404; or the Stonewall Jackson House, Lexington, VA 24450.

Evelyn Meade Registered Nurse - Evelyn Gould Parsons Meade, 95, a retired nurse and volunteer, died of cerebral vascular disease March 16 at her home in Bethesda.

Mrs. Meade worked at D.C. General Hospital in the medical-surgical department and at George Washington University Hospital during the 1930s until she married and became a full-time homemaker.

A native of Parsons, W.Va., she moved to Washington in 1929 to get her registered nursing certificate from the Capital City School of Nursing.

She was a longtime member of St. Columba Episcopal Church, volunteering for its newsletter and fundraising activities. She also was a member of the Kenwood Golf and Country Club, where she loved to dance and golf. She also enjoyed painting and creating ceramic figures.

Her husband, Dr. Spencer Vincent Meade, died in 1979.

Survivors include a son, Dr. William Spencer Meade of Bethesda; a brother; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

On March 16, 2006 of Bethesda, MD. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Spencer Vincent Meade; beloved mother of Dr. William Spencer Meade of Bethesda, MD; mother-in-law of Jane Meade of Manhattan Beach, CA.

She is also survived by grandson, Spencer Kent Meade and a granddaughter both of Manhattan Beach, CA; a great-granddaughter; brother, Richard C. Parsons of Uniontown, PA.

Friends may call on Sunday, March 19 at JOSEPH GAWLER'S SONS, INC., 5130 Wisconsin Ave., N.W. (corner of Harrison St., N.W.), Washington, DC, 20016 from 4 to 6 p.m., where services will be held on Monday, March 20 at 11 a.m. Interment Parklawn Memorial Park.

PARSONS, Charles W. Jr., 67, of Richmond, passed away Thursday, August 26, 2010.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Norma K. Parsons; siblings, William J. Parsons (Betty), Joyce Taylor (Edwin) and Linda Gulick.

He was a member of the John Marshall Cadet Corps.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, August 29, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue, where a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 29. Interment will be private. He will be greatly missed by his loving dog, Roxie.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Heritage Humane Society of Williamsburg, 430 Waller Mill Road, Williamsburg, Va. 23185. The family would like to thank Dr. Stanley Goldman and staff, as well as All About Care and Care Advantage, for the special care given.

PARSONS, William J. "Joey", 67, of Richmond, went to be with his Lord, Sunday, December 23, 2012.

He was a graduate of John Marshall High School class of 1966 and a member of the Corps of Cadets Co.B. He retired from Dominion Virginia Power in 2005 with 37 years of service. In his retirement, he served as a bus driver for Henrico County for students with special needs. He was a longtime, faithful member and deacon of Staples Mill Road Baptist Church (SMRBC)
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles William Parsons and Ruby Sandieson Moseley; a brother, Charles W. "Bill" Parsons Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Betty Elliott Parsons; sons, William J. "Jody" Parsons Jr., and wife, Kimberly; Michael S. Parsons; daughter, Stacey P. Bonnett, and husband, Nicholas; grandchildren, Jacoby Bonnett, Abby Bonnett, Luke Parsons; sisters, Joyce G. Taylor, Linda S. Gulick. The family will receive friends Wednesday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Bliley's-Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Road. Funeral service

1940 - 1950 - At some point, prior to 1950, Eveleen applies for her SS# with an address in California.  I have searched through some California City Directories online looking for this couple in the 1940's with no success.  I suspect that Eveleen was probably in California while her husband was in the Navy between 1944 - 1945.  The ship he served on was probably based in California.
