Clinton A Phillips
- b. Jun - Aug 1900 ; d. Aug 3, 1902,
IA. Buried at Lewis Township Cemetery,
Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie Co., IA.
Child was 2 years old. Census for family was
taken Jul 11, 1900. Therefore to be 2
years old, he had to be born between Jun 11,
1900 and Aug 3, 1900.
|
| |
Vernie or other Phillips
-
Aug 27, 1903, Crescent, Harrison Co., IA
-- other date for Vernie in Iowa birth index.
Possibilities:
1) Iowa Index has wrong date
2) Aug 27, 1903 is actually Vernie's birth
date, not the Jul 25, 1904 date, even though
there is a delayed birth certificate. With
so many children, there is the possibility
that Jul 25, 1904 is just wrong. The
1910 Census is exactly correct for all of
the other children for May of 1910.
Since Vernie's birth day is in Jul/Aug, he
is not yet 7 years old, which would mean his
birth year was in fact 1903. The 1905
Iowa Census also backs this up. In
this Census, he is 2 years old, which means
he was born in 1903, not 1904. Same for the
1915 Iowa Census where he is 12 years old.
3) There were 4 other children who died
young. Is this the original Vernie who
died young and Vernie Charles who was born
the following year was given the same
name??? Or visa versa? |

Obituary for Mrs W H Vanscoy
Onawa Democrat, Mar 4, 1929 |
Mrs. W. H. Vanscoy Passed Away Late Sunday Evening At Her Home
after Suffering A Severe Paralytic Stroke and Lapsed into
Unconsciousness From Which She Did Not Recover—Funeral Was Held
on Tuesday Afternoon—Was a Much Honored Women.
The entire community and county were shocked Monday when the
news went out that Mrs. W. H. Vanscoy had passed away suddenly
late Sunday evening. On Sunday afternoon, Mrs. Vanscoy suffered
a paralytic stroke and lapsed into unconsciousness, The end came
peacefully that evening. Everything that medical skill and
tended hands could do was offered in a vain attempt to save her
life. Mrs. Vanscoy had been suffering from the flu
intermittently for a week or 10 days and in her weakened
condition she was un able to withstand the shock of the stoke.
Mamie Carmody was born August 13, 1885 in Sherman township being
the daughter of James and Elizabeth Carmody, old pioneers of the
county. She grew up and attended the public schools and took an
active part in her girlhood in the affairs of the community.
On June 28, 1906 she was united in marriage to William H.
Vanscoy. To this union 3 children were born. They are Elizabeth,
Carmody, and Kathryn Jean, who all survive and a brother,
Charles Carmody of Seattle, Wash.
Mrs. Vanscoy was a member of the Congregational Church of
Blencoe, Ladies Aid Society and being, also Oracle of the Royal
Neighbors and Noble Grand of the Rebekahs.
Funeral services were held from the home on Tuesday afternoon in
charge of Rev. G,. H. Croker of Whiting an old friend of the
family. Burial was made in Graceland Cemetery.
Mrs. Vanscoy had been identified with the lodges of the
community for nearly 20 years. Under her guidance the Royal
Neighbor lodge grew fro a small membership to one of the largest
in the county. Largely through her indomitable spirit and
persistence the lodge was brought through many a lean year. She
gave much of her time to lodge work. She was also head of the
Rebekah order and contributed much to its accomplishments.
It will always be remembered that she saw to it each year that a
flag was placed on the grave of every departed soldier on
Decoration day.
Passing away at the early age of 43 years, 7 months and 4 days
she accomplished as much as many people do in a long life's
span. In her early life, Mrs. Vanscoy's singing was always in
demand at every funeral and every occasion where music was
needed. |

Wife
Hazel???? - In the obituary above, it
mentions a wife named Hazel living in Los
Angeles. A quick look in the city
directories for a Hazel Vanscoy is
unsuccessful. Not sure if this
marriage was real or not. In both the
1930 and 1940 Census, he is a widow.
In 1942, the WWII Registration names his
youngest daughter as emergency contact. |

Even though James was the child of Monroe and Mary Jane Phillips, I am still
related to James because of the Vanscoy family. James Arlington
Vanscoy is a distant Vanscoy cousin. Ellis Hixon Vanscoy, father of Monroe,
was my 3rd great granduncle. Brother to my 3rd great grandfather
William Vanscoy who married Sarah Hart. Therefore, I am including his
information below. |

Obituary for James A Vanscoy
Tampa Bay Times, St. Petersburg, Florida,
Sun, May 30, 1982 pg 43 |
VANSCOY, JAMES A., 95, of 4927 39th Ave. N,
died Tuesday (May 25[24], 1982). Born in Iowa,
he came here in 1969 from Webster, Wis. and
was a retired miller. He was a member of the
Masonic Lodge in Wisconsin.
Survivors
include a son Chester, St. Petersburg; two
daughters, Audrey Anderson, Concord, Calif.,
and Helen Smith, Antler, N. D.; five
grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and
several great-great-grandchildren. The Palms
Memorial Funeral Home |
|
| |
Of note on
the obituary: Daughter Helen Smith
was his step-daughter and she had the 5
children from her first marriage to William
Joseph O'Brien. Daughter Audrey was also
adopted. James Arlington Vanscoy's
only blood heir was his son Chester
James Vanscoy, who did not have any
children. BUT I do also
question whether Chester was actually his
son, Chester was born in 1913.
James and Grace did not marry until 1915.
They could have very well been together when
Chester was born. Chester was born in
Papillion, NE. The family did have
ties in this area around Omaha, NE. |

As mentioned
above....I do question whether Chester was
actually his blood son. Chester was
born in 1913, his parents married in 1915.
However, all the records indicate Chester
