To find the information
on Charles S Stewart after 1880, it took several days of research going through
the historical documents.
Some family trees have his death
listed as 1939. This is incorrect. Charles Stewart was a
common name during this period so it is easy to see how some might
confuse this Charles Stewart, with another.
To find this
Charles Stewart I needed to narrow my search to known facts:
1) Charles was born in Louisiana. The family lived in
Louisiana between 1870 - 1871 before appearing in Milam Co., TX
in the 1880 Census.
2) Mother Bethania was born in Georgia. Father John
Stewart was born in Alabama.
Since Charles' location in 1880 is confirmed by the Census records,
the next place to look was the 1900 Census. Using the known
facts above, I searched for a Cha* Stewart or Stuart born around
1871 in Louisiana who had a father born in Alabama and a mother born
in Georgia. Using this method is often hit and miss because
you can only hope that whoever is reporting the information to the
census taker, actually knows the truth. In this case, I was
lucky. I came across a Charles Stewart in Lafayette Co.,
Arkansas who fit this criteria. [Tip:
use the * wildcard feature when doing a search on a name like
Charles. The * on the end of Cha* will give you all of the
variations of the name Charles, Charlie, Charly, Chas, etc]
This was a solid lead because his older brother Thomas Jefferson
Stewart eventually moves back and forth between Arkansas and Texas
and finally settles down in Lafayette Co., AR. What I have
discovered about this family is that some (not all) end up moving to
areas where their other family members are. [Tip:
You need to research the entire family to find clues on finding the
others]
The 1900 Census shows a brother, Pierce Adams. It appears as
if Mary provided the information. This was her brother
Franklin Pierce Adams, not Charles' brother. With this
information I went to look for a marriage record for a Charles
Stewart and Mary Adams dated prior to 1900. In the marriage
records for Lafayette Co., AR the marriage record was found.

The next logical step at
this point was to find Charles and Mary and son Charles in the 1910
Census. I was not successful in finding Charles.
However, I did find Mary (now a widow) and son Charles, living with
her other brother Albert S Adams with an additional three children.
This means Charles S Stewart died before the 1910 Census.
Since death records for Arkansas do not exist until 1914, I looked
at cemetery records in Lafayette Co., AR. I found a Charles S
Stewart born in 1871 who died in 1908. Also, this Charles S
Stewart is buried in the exact same cemetery as his brother Thomas
Jefferson Stewart who died in 1926.

To track the four living
children of Charles S Stewart, one must follow widow Mary.
|
| |
1910 - 1914
- Mary moves to Montana. A widowed woman of four children does
not take off to the wilderness of Montana unless she is traveling
with someone. This someone was probably one of her brothers.

Charley's WWI Registration Card (see below)
|
| |
1920
- Census - Mary has moved from Montana to Virginia with her second
husband where they live for a few years. Charles Stewart's
daughters Mary C and Vera have the last name Shaffer in this census.
It appears that daughter Mary's middle name is Clyde. The
birth place of father for Mary Clyde and Vera was also incorrectly
reported as Iowa, which is Henry Shaffer's birth location.
However, when daughter Vera marries in the future, she is using the maiden
name of Stewart. |

Charles "Charley" Stewart |
| |
The first name for
Charles and the variations, made him hard to track down.
He used Charles, Charlie, and Charley. It appears that
Charley was his preferred name.
The middle initial of S only appears in the 1910 Census.
On his military registration cards he always refers to a
relative in this family as his contact person, so it confirms
that this is the correct Charles / Charley Stewart. |

Mack Stewart |
| |
Whether Mack is the
actual first name or not is unclear. Mack could very well
be a nick name for McKinley. The name Mckinley is only
found in the 1910 Census. All of the other times, only the
first name of Mack is used.
In the Census records, WWII Registration, and city directories
he was employed as a brakeman for the railroad |

The death date on
Mack's tomb has not been engraved. This leads me to believe
that he died after his wife. There was no evidence of any
children. Therefore, there was no one to cover the final cost of
the engraving or to make sure the cemetery did the work.
Which does happen quite often. The other possibility is
that he was never buried here and is buried elsewhere. I can not
find a Mack Stewart with his birth date in the SSDI.
Again, not unusual if there was no wife or child to claim death
benefits. There is no online death index for
Arkansas after 1961 (as of Feb, 2017) so I can not
check there. Arkansas has a 50 year rule. |

1920
- Census - Mary is living with her mother, sister Vera, and

Clyde Shaffer age 16. |
| |
After the 1920
Census Mary is difficult to track. I checked all marriages
in Montana to see if she had returned to Montana with her
mother. No marriage found under Mary Stewart or Shaffer. One
thing to note was that she was working in 1920 which means, she
did have her own source of income. The other possibility
was that she married someone in Virginia since she was at that
age.
In the 1930 Census I did come across a Mary Clyde Dalton.
(indexed under Mary Clyde Dallin) 25 years old, born in
Arkansas, living in Norfolk, VA. She also appears in the
1940 Census in Norfolk, VA as divorced under the name Mary C
Dalton at age 35. This Mary Clyde Dalton was also found in
the Virginia Divorce Records. On the divorce decree
document, the maiden name is not given. The place of birth
given was Hot Springs, AR which is no where close to Lafayette
Co., AR. Although, this could have been a fib or she did
not know where in Arkansas she was born. I am unable to
find marriage records for Hampton, VA online for the date of Mar
15, 1930, to see the maiden name of Mary Clyde Dalton who
married James Henry Dalton, Jr.
Tracking down James Henry Dalton, Jr was a dead end. He
appears with his father in the 1930 Census one month after the
marriage to this Mary Clyde who does claim, she was deserted
right after the marriage. |

After this, I hit a
dead end finding Mary. Without an exact date of birth,
Mary is too common of a name. Hopefully in the future
marriage records for Hampton, VA, 1930 will become available
online to check on the the maiden name. |
