Obituary for John Edwin Brewer
http://www.tributes.com/show/John-E.-Brewer-94568303 |
 |
John
Edwin Brewer was born July 2nd 1943 in Kansas City,
Mo to Daniel Jackson Brewer and Josephine Ladish
Brewer. He was their 4th child with two older
sisters Rosemary and JoAn an older brother Dan and
younger sister Elizabeth.
John was an active boy who loved being outdoors. In
high school he ran track and won the 1936 Class A
Mile at Kansas Regional Championships. He
learned about the promises of Gods kingdom as a teen
and made his dedication in January of 1960 at the
age of 17, he moved to the Westport area where one
floor up from his apartment he met Virginia Fulk who
was also pioneering. |
They soon were married and
assigned as special pioneers to the Paola, Ks area. In the
summer of 1966 they received life changing news. They had
been accepted to the Bible School of Gilead in New York.
This five month course gave them much needed training for
what was to follow… Spring 1967 they moved to their new
missionary assignment in Chile S.A. where they spent the
next 13 years in La Serena, Santiago, and Punta Arenas. They
had many, many adventures during that time including a bout
with scarlet fever that almost took his life. In 1979 a big
decision was made… have children and leave the missionary
work or continue in their assignment. Well, that summer they
moved back to Kansas City expecting their first child but
chose to continue their special work by joining the first
Spanish congregation in Kansas City. Needing a way to
support their volunteer work John decided to learn the
electrical field, using books from the library and armed
with a ladder, screwdriver, hammer and pliers he learned the
field and started his own business, Brewer's Electric, acing
all the tests until earning his masters in electrical.
In March of 1980 a baby girl was born (Camila), then fearing
she was lonely and needed a companion, a "bouncing baby boy"
(Kursten) was born in September of 1982. Being a lover of
travel he took the family on frequent trips through Mexico
but still longed for the missionary life left behind. In
1988 he began planning for their next big adventure… 1989,
he sold the house, purchased a discarded 64 passenger school
bus that had been flooded, with the help of the Spanish
brothers the bus was gutted cleaned and the engine repaired
then loaded with the families possessions to become a make
shift RV. With it he moved his family to Guatemala C.A. to
again serve as independent missionaries. But this time
returning to Kansas City every year for three months to work
in order to financially support life in Guatemala until 1994
when they moved back to Kansas City where he continued
building his business, teaching his son and daughter the
electrical field, and then watched them leave the nest as he
and Virginia settled in to life as just the two of them. In
2003 his first grandchild was born (Jesse) to his daughter.
In 2006 Virginia lost her battle with cancer ending 38 years
of marriage.
John soon found companionship and love in an old friend
Sharon and they were married the summer of 2006 starting a
new chapter in their lives. In 2007 his second grandchild
(Jordan) was born. Then John was diagnosed with Alzheimers
in 2008 and he and Sharon began the difficult battle that is
living with the disease, the decision was made to sell the
business and retire. In 2009 his third grandchild was born (Calandra).
John spent the remaining years in faithful service to
Jehovah, enjoying his back yard and neighborhood walks as
well as visits to the coast.
He died on Monday October 8th in a traffic accident at the
age of 69 having lived a very full and exciting life in
Jehovah's service. |

Bexar Co., TX; Entombed at Sunset Memorial Park, San Antonio,
Bexar Co., TX, Mausoleum II, Wall 1351-1330)
According to online cemetery listings, Mattie Christine is not
entombed with husband. However, this may just mean her name
was not recorded at that cemetery on the website. Death
certificate says cremation. |

The only time the
first name "Mattie" appears in the records, is the 1920 Census
where her mother made sure everyone's full name was entered.
After that, only the name Christine appears. |

What is confusing about
the grave marker for Minerva is the engraved section that says
"Beloved wife, mother, and grandmother" Yes, she was a wife.
However, as far as I can figure out, she did not give birth to any
children. Then I thought about step-children. The two
sons that Cornelius had with wife Jennie were already adults at the
time of Jennie's death. Which means, Effie did not help raise
the sons. However, she may have been accepted as a mother and
grandmother figure to the family. In that case, the above mentioned
engraving would make perfect sense. |

- City Directory - San Antonio - Living at 157 Mahncke Ct under name
Willie Stewart.
While some family members continued to live at this address, up to at
least 1931, Willie does not appear in the San Antonio directory
under the name Willie Stewart or at this address after 1924. |
| |
Looking through the
Texas marriage licenses and indexes. I found two possible marriages
with women by the name of Willie Stewart. There is not enough
information to determine if the Willie Stewart in these two
marriages is the Willie Stewart in this family. I just placed
the information here in case there may be a connection found later. |
| |
1924 - Possible marriage to
Thomas Grant May 13, 1924, Kaufman TX. This marriage would
have ended prior to Dec 28, 1926 when Thomas married again Maggie
Wright Mixon |
| |
1925 - Possible marriage to
an Elzie Brown, Feb 25, 1925, Smith Co., TX, |
| |
From 1924 up until 1962,
when Willie is mentioned in her sister Mary Alva's obituary, Willie was
a bit of a mystery. Available online state marriage records
are skimpy between this time period. I believe she moved
around a bit and may have had a few husbands along the way. In her
sister's 1962 obituary, she is mentioned as Mrs Willie Watkins of
Tucson, AZ.
Also, somewhere along the line, her name evolved from Willie into
Billie. I thought this was a typo when I was tracking her in
the Tucson City Directories, but "Billie" was confirmed in sister
Eunice's obituary in 2000, where she is mentioned as Billie Watkins.
The SSDI also lists her name as Billie L Watkins.
Using a few of the online city directories for Tucson AZ, I tracked
Billie who was listed as the wife of Evans W Watkins. Ancestry has
sporadic city directory coverage for Tucson. Using what they
had, I pieced together the following:
- 1948 - Evans Watkins is living in Tucson with first wife
Kathleen Nettie Fountain.
- 1952 - Evans is still in Tucson directory, no wife listed
- 1954 - First year Billie appears with Evans in Tucson
- 1958, 1959 -- Evans and Billie still together in Tucson
|
| |
1953
- Married Evans Whitley Watkins ca 1953 -
Based on the City Directory information
above, I can conclude that Billie (Willie) was already in or came to
Tucson somewhere around 1952 - 1953. The marriage of Evans and
Billie took place between this time, most likely in Arizona. |
