Virgil Eskew was born February 4, 1930 to Raymond and Gertrude (Hinchman) Eskew. With the exception of 2 years of mandatory service in the Korean War (1951-1953), Virgil lived on a farm on Kings Run Road near Elkins, WV for 88 years. He spent the last 4 ½ years of his life living with his youngest daughter, Norma, and her husband, Lee, in Eclectic, Alabama.

While in the Army, he attained the rank of Corporal and served as a Combat Engineer assigned to the Headquarters and Service Company 13th Engineer Combat Battalion.

Virgil married Betty Ann Long on October 12, 1956. Together, they had three daughters: Cheryl, Judy, and Norma.
For over 30 years, Virgil worked at the Kelly Foundry and Machine Company in Elkins, WV. In addition to the foundry work, Virgil worked on the farm mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. There were no vacations. When he was in his sixties, Virgil sold the farm, but kept the farm house to live in. Betty passed away in 2003, after many years of full-time care provided by Virgil. In addition to providing care to his wife, he faithfully visited his sister-in-law who was in a nursing home for many years, shared produce from his garden and helped neighbors and friends, and participated in church life over the years at Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church and Landmark Baptist Church in Ekins, WV - and First Baptist Church in Eclectic, AL.

The family expresses their thanks to all the people he knew in West Virginia and Alabama. He lived a hardworking, honest, and simple life believing in Jesus as his Savior. He died on May 7, 2023 at the age of 93. He is now at total peace in the presence of God.

Virgil Eskew is survived by his sister, Vonda Shipman, his three daughters: Cheryl Turnes (Garry), Judy Oliver (Robert), and Norma Billings (Lee); grandchildren: Ashley Dove, Portia Oliver, April Lofton George, and Keith Billings (Rachelle); great grandchildren: DeShawn, Alondra, Brian Jr., Sy'Reese, Nadia, Lauryn, Jace, Cruz, and Chloe; sweetheart, Rachel Pingley - and many other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Gertrude Eskew, his wife, Betty, and his brother-in-law Richard Shipman.

A brief (public) Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at 11:00 AM at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home in Elkins, WV. A private graveside service will follow at the American Legions Little Arlington Cemetery in Elkins, WV. The Rev. Dr. Kenneth Shiflet of Landmark Baptist Church will be leading both services. Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations in remembrance of his life be given to: Landmark Baptist Church, 1514 Harrison Ave., Elkins, WV 26241 or First Baptist Church Eclectic, P.O. Box 240400, Eclectic, AL 36024.

Edna D. Newsom, 97, of Colonial Heights, Virginia, died Friday September 11, 2009.

She was born on February 18, 1912, in Elkins, West Virginia. Edna was the daughter of the late John Stark and Amy Pritt Hinchman.

She was a 1959 graduate of the Petersburg General Hospital School of Practical Nursing, passed the Virginia State Board Exam, and became a Licensed Practical Nurse that same year. She was employed by the Petersburg General Hospital until she retired.

Edna was a long time member of Wesley United Methodist Church, and later the Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Newsom was preceded in death by her husband, Alonzo Newsom, and her first husband, Harold B. Daniels; three brothers, Leslie L. Hinchman, Cecil S. Hinchman, and Winfred H. Hinchman; three sisters, Eva E. Hinchman, Velma A. Hinchman, and Gertrude H. Eskew; one son, Arthur B. Daniels; two grandsons, Timothy B. Heckel, and Arthur B. Daniels Jr.; one great granddaughter, Christie A. Heckel.

Survivors include two sisters, Virginia H. Chenoweth, and Ruby H. Kerns both of Elkins, West Virginia; two daughters, Winifred D. Heckel and husband Richard, and Vivian D. Laderach and husband Ralph, all of Colonial Heights; one son, Ralph R. Daniels and wife Lillian, of Cartersville, Va.; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 14, 2009 in the Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, 211 Lynchburg Ave. Colonial Heights, Va. 23834, with the Reverend Dr. Paul Bonham officiating. Interment Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, Va. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church Monday. Arrangements by the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.

Winifred D. Heckel, 87, of Colonial Heights, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2018.

Born in Elkins, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Harold Daniels and Edna H. Newsome and was preceded in death by her brother, Arthur B. Daniels; children, Timothy Bryan and Phillip Arthur Heckel; and grandchild, Christie Ann Heckel.

She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church. Winifred enjoyed puzzling, and was a lucky bingo player, but nothing was more important to her than spending time with her family and preparing them meals. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit #284.
She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother and is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years, Richard R. Heckel; children, Richard Edward Heckel (Marilyn), Brenda Heckel Shelburne (Eli), Charles Lynn Heckel (Patti), Stephen Wayne Heckel (JoAnne, deceased), and Cathy Heckel Colletti (Tom); 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Ralph Richard Daniels; and sister, Vivian D. Laderach.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 17111 Jefferson Davis Hwy, South Chesterfield, VA 23834, with Father Danny Cogut, Celebrant. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 4, 2018, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.

He was owner of A.B. Daniels Construction Co. He was an alumnus of Richard Bland College and VCU.

He was predeceased by his father Arthur Barron Daniels, Sr.

He is survived by his mother, Shirley T. Daniels; sister, Shawna D. Henderson of Powhatan; brother, Bryant Daniels of Colonial Heights; niece, Elizabeth Dean Henderson of Richmond; nephew, Joseph Thomas Henderson of Colonial Heights; paternal grandmother, Edna Newsome of Colonial Heights; maternal grandmother, Betty J. Atkinson of Elkins, W. VA.

Virginia Pearl Hinchman Chenoweth, age 93 years, a resident of Chenoweth Creek Road, Elkins, and more recently a resident of Valentine Assisted Living, Beverly, departed this life at 4:40 A.M. Saturday, January 1, 2011 in Valentine Assisted Living.

Virginia was born December 10, 1917 at Elkins, the daughter of the late John Stark and Amy Pearl Pritt Hinchman.

She was married November 22, 1944 to the late Clee "Bus" Chenoweth at Baltimore, MD.
They were the parents of three children, Roger Clee Chenoweth, who was deceased at birth, Gary Lynn Chenoweth of Elkins and Benjamin Gray Chenoweth and wife Sheila, of Tulsa, OK. One grandson, Robert Clee Chenoweth and wife Misty, of Elkins and one great grandson Jacob Clee Chenoweth. Also surviving is one sister, Ruby Hazel Kerns of Elkins, along with several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Also preceding her in death were three brothers; Winifred, Cecil, and Lesley Hinchman and four sisters; Eva and Velma Hinchman, Gertrude Eskew and Edna Daniels Newsome.

Mrs. Chenoweth went to school eight years at White School and three years at Elkins High School. She worked at Murphy Store and Kroger Store in the early 1940's and was a homemaker for the rest of her life. She volunteered her time at the Randolph County Senior Center and worked the polls during the Randolph County elections. Mrs. Chenoweth was a member of the Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church, Randolph County Senior Center, John Hart Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Randolph County Belle in 1989.

Friends may call from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, January 6th from the funeral home chapel with Rev. William Calhoun officiating. Interment will follow at the Chenoweth Cemetery near Elkins. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Care Corporation, P. O. Box 760, Arthurdale, WV 26520 or to the Alzheimer's Association, Northern Regional Office, 1299 Pineview Drive, Suite # 3, Morgantown, WV 26505 in memory of Mrs. Chenoweth.

Gary L. Chenoweth, 70, a resident of the Chenoweth Creek Community, departed this life Wednesday, September 8, 2021. His death was attributed to natural causes, and was unexpected.

Gary was born on Thursday, January 25, 1951, at Elkins, WV, to the late Clee B. "Bus" Chenoweth and Virginia Pearl Hinchman Chenoweth.

Gary attended the one room school located at Chenoweth Creek, and graduated from Elkins High School with the class of 1969, where he excelled in football and track. Gary went on to attend Potomac State College and West Virginia University, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing.
After graduating from West Virginia University, Gary embarked on a career in the construction industry, working for local contractors, and also working for approximately a decade in, and around Woodbridge, VA. Gary eventually moved back to Elkins and began his own company, Chenoweth Builders, LLC, where he specialized in residential construction, In addition to operating his own construction business, Gary was a master builder and enjoyed building hand crafted furniture and built many family heirlooms left for his family and others to cherish.

Upon retirement, Gary devoted his time to maintaining the family farm and spending time with his family, around whom his life revolved.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Robert C. Chenoweth; daughter-in-law, Misty D. Judy Chenoweth, and his 6 grandchildren, Jacob, Jillian, Eli, Elliott, Riley and Levi Chenoweth, whom all reside in Elkins, WV. Gary was formerly married to Joyce Royer Chenoweth, to whom he still remained close. Gary is also survived by his brother, Benjamin Chenoweth, and sister-in-law Sheila Mosely Chenoweth of Imamura, FL.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, and infant brother Roger C. Chenoweth.

Gary's wishes for cremation and a graveside service will be honored, with a celebration to follow at a later date. In his memory, the family request contributions are made to a charity of choice in Garys memory. The Tomblyn Funeral Home has been entrusted for the services of Gary L. Chenoweth. Ruby Hazel Hinchman Kerns, age 95 years, a former resident of Elkins, WV and more recently a resident of Cincinnati, OH departed this life Wednesday afternoon, May 10, 2017 at the Hospice of Cincinnati - East Inpatient Care Center at Cincinnati, OH. She had been in declining health.

She was born Saturday, July 9, 1921 at Elkins, WV a daughter of the late John Stark and Amy Pearl Pritt Hinchman.

On September 11, 1951 at Elkins, WV she was married to Arno Scott Kerns, who preceded her in death February 12, 1992. They had celebrated forty years of marriage.

Surviving are one son, Allen Wayne Kerns and wife Debra of Cincinnati, OH; one granddaughter, Allyson Ann Carter; and two great grandsons, Austin Allen Carter, and Britton Lee Carter, all of Longview, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
Ruby was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Preceding her in death are three brothers, Winfred, Cecil Stark, and Leslie Lynn Hinchman; and five sisters, Eva Elizabeth, and Velma Audra Hinchman, Gertrude Eskew, Edna Newsom, and Virginia Chenoweth.

She attended the White School and was a graduate of Elkins High School with the Class of 1940. She had worked for the Randolph County Board of Education for seventeen years, working as Head Cook for eleven years at Elkins High School, Central School, and North School, retiring in 1986. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Degree of Honor, the Randolph County Senior Center, the Randolph County Retired Teachers Association and the Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church. Ruby loved flowers and country music.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 8 PM, Monday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home, Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 11 AM. Pastor Jeremiah A. Jasper will officiate and interment will follow at the Elkins Memorial Gardens on the Country Club Road, Elkins, WV
